My dad loves this movie. (He’s a Marine veteran, so he was Navy-adjacent.) I miss military comedies. They pretty much disappeared after 9/11 and the War on Terror. Edited to add: My first time seeing Harland Williams in a movie was in “RocketMan”, but he and all of his other co-stars in this movie are all quite entertaining in their own ways.
What I liked about this movie was the plausibility of the story, under the comedic elements was a believable scenario much like the old Operation Petticoat.
My dad was WWII navy & liked it. Thought Kelsey Grammer was gonna make a mockery of the Navy & was pleasantly surprised that they did a good job with the movie.
A retired admiral said that "Down Periscope" was a realistic portrayal of life on a submarine, both the battle readiness and the hijinks. Having this song in the closing credits was brilliant - I don't think many people thought the Village People were still a band.
When this song came out, the Navy used the Village People in a recruiting commercial. When they found out that the VP were gay icons, they pulled that commercial fast. 😂
critics kill everything, ignore critics and watch the movie if the plot sounds good. We have a critic here that did kill and bury good movies since he didnt like that kind of movie from the start. All trash movies got good reviews from him though. He was a great source for what movie is good, when he said it was trash it was a really good movie to watch lol.
@@doughesson As I understand things, legally speaking, officers and enlisted are allowed to be in relationships as long as it's not within the same chain of command.
This film came out while I was "in the Navy" (VFA151). 'Operation Petticoat' may be the funniest Navy service comedy I've seen, but this one is a close runner-up. Rob Schneider as the XO was hilarious. My squadron mate and I were rolling. I looked at Ash and said "Lieutenant Hirschman" to which he immediately agreed. 😂
Always thought this was Rob Schneider's funniest role. Shame he doesn't seem to know that. He's great at playing a power-hungry jumped-up little arsehole and could have carved out a whole career doing that, instead of the other stupid crap he does.
Best recruitment drive ever! My idea in 1979 too! Movie, and they all volunteered for a do over! Commodore Glen Collins. Aye aye what? That’s better or you go overboard. Like my flag? William Kidd at my service, as I am King.
Sexual orientation had nothing to do with there talent this song insulted the Navy though In the US we boast about democracy and freedom so it must be a lie of u pull them from commercial good music
It's one of the best Kelsey Grammar movies ever.
This song came out just as I was going into the Navy in 1979.
My dad joined the Navy three years later in 1982 and I was born that same year
-Mine had.just his started post-Boot USAF career in 1979. I would be born a year later

If there had been more ladies that looked like Lauren Holly in the Navy I would not have gotten out in 1985!

The Village People wish they were as big a gay icon as the Navy.
But it was too late, the navy was already super gay.
I love Kelsey Grammar in this.. and as Beast in X-Men....
Najlepšia komédia, ktorú som videla. Vždy ma rozveselí!👍♥️🤣
Not a bad movie but the critics panned it (hu kares) Some parts were filmed the SF Bay
