The last of the golden era for American comedy movies. Such a great movie!
first class!
The submarine that played the Stingray is the USS Pampanito, a Balao class WWII veteran with six war patrols and six battle stars under her belt
You can still visit her in San Francisco, I’ve done it it’s pretty cool
@@robertdarnell5141 Yes. Beautiful boat for sure. Took my son there when he was about 12. She is one of the best representations of the Balao/Gato class sub still in existence.
@@robertdarnell5141 Yea, but then I'd have to go to San Francisco. Can't they move it?
@@jimdandy8119 Reportedly they had to tow her for all the outside shots of movement.
@@jimdandy8119 if you go, you’ll prolly drop all the anti-California sentiment. It’s an amazing place.
Definitely can't deny that that boat cleans up nicely.
Fun fact - those are the actual engines of the USS Pampanito, they still run. Even though the sub was towed for the above sea scenes.
quality has no expiration date!
Yea, I doubt they would be running the diesels without the crank case covers on.
Didn't they remove the props as the compromise for keeping the engines functional?
In the fleet this movie is considered more of a documentary than it is a comedy. I can put names and faces of crewmates that I served with on every one of the characters.
Yup. Heck, I dated a Lt. Lake type of lady for a while (she was a pilot, not a submarine officer, and more confident from the get-go, but the same type of doggedly determined). She’s still a great friend and I‘m privileged to know her. Always think of her when watching this movie.
I guess that’s why this flick is such a service favorite; there is always someone great you knew that pops to mind when watching this. OK, so I served in the Army, but still. You Navy folks are all right, too. 😉
Walking the plank scene was gold!
When I was a kid I bought this movie just for that Lauren Holly uniform scene.
Personally I found it pointless then and I really hate it now. If I were in Captain Dodge’s place, the crew would conduct alternating Field Day and Health and Comfort inspections under Mr. Pascal’s supervision until her proper uniform was returned to her.
@@FS2K4Pilot Having had an XO like Mr Pascal, there would have been a LOT of re-inspections & a couple because the guy standing by was not in proper uniform of the day.
"Sir,I'm cleaning the head...."
@@doughesson That’s the idea.
It's not pointless it's a joke, & It also shows that Lt. Lake doesn't "fit in" with the rest of the crew in the beginning. It gives Lt Lake & the crew characters room to grow and empathize with each other later in the film. I don't know why someone wouldn't like that? Maybe doesn't fit your sense of humor but it's not pointless.
one of the best submarine comedies out there! in fact, the best!!
Funniest scene in the movie involved Buckman the cook. Love this movie and have it in my collection.
OMG back when the mothball fleet was actually full of old warships.
I want to add a salute to the background Fleet. Movie in 1996. I bet half of the background fleet served in the Gulf War of 1990 to 1991.
@@wfoj21 You probably shaved with that cruiser in the background this morning.
Submarines are designed and built in my city of Groton/New London, CT.
My grandfather started as a laborer in ’52, and retired as Chief of Nuclear Design.
Nautilus is enjoying her retirement years out there too.
My late grandfather's city too: Newport News VA. Newport News Shipbuilding to be exact
The mechanic Harry Dean Stanton is the best character in the movie.
I disagree but to be honest I don't know whom to pick as "best as so many of the actors played their characters so well.
“Let’s kick this pig!” Greatest think any captain ever said😂 I love Dodge, he’s Maverick and Quinten McHale rolled into one.
they should have made a sequel.
Maverick for the naval air arm
McHale for the surface fleet
Dodge for the silent service
Saw this in the theater with my late father. He and I had a mature, matter-of-fact relationship. I was 16 in 1996 and I like subs. He liked me enough to take me.
Also one of the best recordings of the song. When I was a kid, I rewound the VHS tape so often that it started getting funky. 😝
This is classic! Great move!!
Excellent movie. Don't think they could have picked a better ensemble
Seriously, thank you for uploading Anchors Aweigh. I've always loved it since my childhood.
Anytime man o7
@@Kakashirevan This is definitely the best version of this song I've heard
severely underrated movie
I've said it before but those old subs have much better lines than the cigar shaped boats of today.
By todays standards, these kinds of submarines are not only outdated but actually dangerous to the safety of the crew. Submarines nowadays are shaped the way they are in order to reduce their sonar cross sections and try to stay hidden from sensors.
@@GlamorousTitanic21 All true but it still makes for ugly boats.
It's a completely different design philosophy. Modern boats are designed to spend the majority of their time submerged; hydrodynamics is a much bigger factor. Boats like Stingray, or USS Pampanito, the museum boat that played Stingray, were designed to spend the majority of their time above the water, submerging only for recon or to attack.
@@NavyGuy2OO7 Yes. Because subs back then were diesel-powered and had to surface to recharge their batteries. With a nuclear-powered submarine, forget it. As they spend almost 99% of their deployment underwater.
@@GlamorousTitanic21 As I said all true, doesn't take away from their lines and looks though.
A great movie from start to the end. The whale imitation scene is flat out hilarious. Museum of Corrosion. lol
And USS Rustoleum😂
@@highwayman8180yes! lol. Hilarious!
Great rendition of “Anchors Away”
Funny Funny Movie, a big two thumbs up 👍🏽👍🏽
I'd love to hear the full version of that rendition of Anchors Aweigh.
I've been TRYING to find this particular rendition of "Anchors Aweigh" for a CYLON'S AGE!
(I'd like to play it, while I'm watching either "Star Trek: TNG episode, that has Geordi LaForge, as Chief Engineer, or the "ST: DS9" episode, "Defiant". That has Miles O'Brien, as the Chief engineer of the USS Defiant!)
Did you look in the end credits? It should be listed with the rest of the music used in the movie.
Ohhh men! I love this film... I love this engine and the smoke...
I like how they cast off before even firing up the engines.
I bet this film was so much fun to work on
I wish the US Navy still had at least one of these still in some kind of service, something akin to the USS Constitution which is manned by US Navy personnel. It would be cool to have current submariners get a chance to relive the period where the US Navy and the submarine force came into its own. It is substantially different now from just 75 years earlier but still, in some ways, a direct connection for those that risked their lives in the 'Silent Service'.
There still one Balao class submarine in ACTIVE SERVICE, which is in the Taiwanese (ROC) navy.
Just like the Eagle the coasties have!
definately something the Naval academy students can take out sit right beside the Constitution.
There are several World War II Fleet Submarines that are museum ships including the Pampanito which is in San Francisco.
Agreed, Only a few Balao class museum boats now... former USS Georgia 729

Officer or not Lt. Lake should have pranked them back. I always thought it would have been funny to glue a bra on Buckley at the hooks. It would have earned the crews respect!
There is a partial deleted scene which did not make the cut. You can read it in the original script online.
Every time I hear Anchors Aweigh, I think about the confidence chamber 🤣

in the helicopter shot you can see the waves
Still an awesome shot seeing her take to the water, under her own power or not.
And the helicopter blades, lol...
looked like you can just barely see the tow cable attached to the very front of the hull, about midway down as the camera is zooming out.
I never noticed that before! You can just see the wake in that last shot!
Nitpicking comment at bearing 2 7 0, ready countermeasures. 😂
The submarine you see here is from the second world war used to sink Japanese ships.
It was mainly used to sink Japanese shipping. Hitting another submarine was pretty difficult, but some did it.
I was just reading the wikipedia page and, well sort of. It depends which sub you mean. The USS Stingray was an actual submarine during World War II and belonged to the Salmon Class submarines. These were built in the 1930s and were the first American submarines to fight in battle against the Japanese during the war. However, they had certain technical problems, so they were phased out in favor of newer submarines. The submarine that the audience sees in the film is the USS Pampanito which was a Balao Class submarine. It had a very distinguished career during and after the war. However, one of the most notable incidents is that the crew accidentally torpedoed a ship carrying 1350 British and Australian POWs most of whom died. It has been a museum ship since 1975.
This particular ship was really good at killing alied troops.
Reagen era navy must've been great

@@venatorclass9334 I was stationed on a tender at Point Loma, in SD. It was amazing watching the different classes of ships go by. I even got to see a BB or 2. We still had an active diesel boat, the USS Blueback. She was the last and is now on display in Oregon, I believe. I think they filmed some of Red October on her. Those were great years to be in the Navy. Don't get me started on the aircraft. So many great aircraft in service back then.

Where can I watched the full movie?
In the UK, Amazon will let you buy or rent the digital streaming version. As that is likely based on an agreement with the rights holder, that is probably available most places. It’s also worth seeing if anyone you have a streaming contract with (Netflix, Hulu, Prime, etc) has it for your region.
You can also try Amazon for a physical copy, or local second hand shops.
@@DanielsPolitics1 Ah thanks, Got the physical copy in my local store yesterday, got the laser disc version. Worth every penny :D
Ngl I thought they used a actual German U boat for this when I first saw it..
I wonder if they actually started her engines for this scene
They did. The USS Pampanitos engines are kept in working order.
How lt lake became jenny shepherd ( NCIS)
From dive officer to director ... Lol
Nooo, Lt. Emily Lake, is Jenny Shepard's twin sister! When NCIS Director Jenny Sheppard, 'learned' about what happened, to Lt. Lake, she 'requested' that SA Leroy Jethro Gibbs, 'look' into the matter.
Shinny gloss haze grey and underway. Fact 1" of steel will produce 12" of rust...hahahah aint no rate like a Boatswain mate.
Why is Lt Lake wearing Captains bars? Or is it just me?
In the Navy, an 0-3 is a Lieutenant. 0-1 is an Ensign and an 0-2 is a LT jg (junior grade).
Still super unsat uniform.
There was foul play.
Because a Lt. in the Navy is not like a Lt. in the Army or Marine Corps, just like a Captain. In the Navy a Captain is like a full Bird Col in the Army.
Lieutenants in the Navy is similar to Captain in the Army-Marines-Air Force.
No better captian than Ole sideshow bob 😂 😂

never seen a sub's engine go (although I've been on this particular sub! IRL she's the Pampanito, anchored in San Francisco, they give tours) but I've seen a naphta engine on an oceanic tug go and they do move that slow and are pretty much self lubricating... like a 2 stroke vespa engine! Only about 1000x the size and 100x as slow.
What do the anchors aweigh? Arghh!😂

Why is blake called Lt ..but wears capt...bars as rank ?
NORTH Korea etc. are building new Diesel Electric boats for exactly the scenario of these war games. Electric boats are much quieter than nuclear subs. No legs, no range on batteries, but very, very quiet.
There are pros and cons to both nuke and diesel/electric designs. 90% of the decision usually comes down to cost and nuclear technology available.
I wonder what a new electric boat could do..small turbine generators (like an aircraft APU) drawing air through a snorkel, supercapacitors and lithium batteries, everything designed to be as little electrical draw as possible..
or even just fuel cells..pour diesel in, get electricity and water out, with almost no moving parts, noise, or emissions.
but anyone with the capabilities to do all this will just build a nuke boat...
@@warhorse03826 Nuke boats are teakettles and make noise, a sub running on batteries, especially with a new smooth hull is extremely quiet.
@@mikeking7470 Only so long as their batteries last. When they need to snorkel to recharge, EVERYBODY knows where they are. But even nukes can go quiet for silent running, by powering down unnecessary systems, and running the reactor with passive convection cooling.
@@warhorse03826 Fuel cells don't use diesel. They use hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity and water. It's the reverse of hydrolysis.
