Fun fact. Mt. Carroll was the site of the last buffalo hunt in Il. American Indians would drive them off the rock bluff at the edge of town. Well before the town was a town. There is a historical marker at the spot.
In the 90s i had the greatest time here. I still think about ravens grin inn and the awesome restaurant (dont recall the name) that gave you markers to draw on the walls, tables and chairs. The food, atmosphere, and service was excellent. Plus, there was some really nice hiking trails. Fantastic little place!
I've been fortunate to call this town home for awhile now and I absolutely love it. Its a beautiful downtown with historic homes and commercial buildings. Wonderful shops on Market St. and some fantastic restaurants. The old Shimer College is a gorgeous campus and in the midst of wonderful renovations.
Only problem I have is that I am an atv rider, my lil tractor. IL. this huge agriculture state, is too restrictive and all the land is private. Too managed for me. That's why the Sturgis Rally is held out here in SD. FEW RULES.
There's a reason why this part of Illinois has been referred to as "South Wisconsin." When I was a kid, Wisconsin's Gov. Nelson used to visit Mt. Carroll. After all, Mount Carroll is a lot closer to Madison, WI than Springfield, IL ... Just sayin' ... Looks like there's been a lot of construction in the last 20 years along US52 east of town and also on the block north of the Post Office.
Happy summer. I did about nine yrs in L. I like the history, convenience and such. But I am more of a fan of the true midwest, like NE SD. WY., my native state. No state taxes, no rust ever. Open range, few fences. Fireworks with a BOOM are sold year round here. Young black males who shoot just to shoot are dragging Chicago down, and people are leaving for good reasons.
One stoplight in the whole of Carroll County...a singularity in far NW Illinois. We are "The Other Downstate" in every meaning of the phrase. Another rarity; we are 30+ miles from any Walmart™. AFAIK this puts Mt. Carroll in the 5% category for incorporated towns/cities in the Lower 48.
Those killer Victorian homes, at much cheaper prices than normal, could not be replicated. 100 yrs ago it was a who's who of the area. Only agri jobs now, for the most part.
Although 1500 people is small the small towns are usual only 10 or 15 miles from another small and there are many things that can be done and have a good time. What are many young ones doing today playing a video game online with another kid. And never leave there room talk about boring.

Unless you love high taxes and corrupt politicians, there is no best place to live in Illinois.

Illinois has some good places. The best places in Illinois are Wisconsin, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, and Iowa.
