  • Join Perrin Stein, Curator, in the Department of Drawings and Prints, for a virtual tour of Jacques Louis David: Radical Draftsman, the first exhibition devoted to works on paper by the celebrated French artist. David navigated vast artistic and political divides throughout his life-from his birth in Paris in 1748 to his death in exile in Brussels in 1825-and his iconic works captured the aspirations and suffering of a nation, while addressing timeless themes that continue to resonate today.
Through the lens of his preparatory studies, the exhibition looks beyond his public successes to chart the moments of inspiration and the progress of ideas. Visitors will follow the artist’s process as he gave form to the neoclassical style and created major canvases that shaped the public’s perceptions of historical events in the years before, during, and after the French Revolution.
Organized chronologically, the exhibition will feature more than eighty drawings and oil sketches-including rarely loaned or newly discovered works-drawn from the collections of The Met and dozens of institutional and private lenders.

It's so revealing to witness the hard work and struggles of an artist prior to painting the masterpiece.
    Thank you!

David was to me the quintessential neo-classical artist and this collection shows us this preparatory sketches and his thoughts through the years, I like it. However, I don't know why we have to fawn over these millionaires and billionaires thanking them for letting the public see art that should be public anyway and not sit in their mansions for them, their families and rich friends to see alone. Works of cultural and historical heritage should belong to everyone, not just the rich. They already have the best lives. That's what the French Revolution was fought for.

Thank you for making your exhibitions available online. It is definitely only an encouragement to visit in person, if possible. David's work has the narrative clarity of a Golden Age Hollywood film.

Thanks to The Met for this great video and perfect presentation by Madame Perrin Stein. The story of the history and artistic life of David was absolutely interesting and I am sorry I won't be able to see this exhibition. I am always a great admirer of painters who also really like to draw. In any case, I will see the video a few more times, Thanks and ENJOY this great exhibition !!!

There is a strange parallel between Davids drawings and
Goyas drawings, disasters of war, portraying the deadly
retreat of Napoleons army from Spain...and also how
at that time many public figures sought refuge from
persecution in Bruxelles, Victor Hugo comes to mind...
interesting show in these troubled times. thank you

I see your point. You see... political mass manipulation and fake news are not something that social media created. They always existed through different media.

Yes, because no one should draw to impress. Drawing, is for ideas, and problem solving! Wrong! If people weren't impressed, then artists wouldn't have fame!
