According to Max Weber, authority is legitimate power.
Legitimate = conforming to rule/law and can be justified or defended
How is authority different from power ?
According to Weber, power is the ability to control the behaviour of others, even in the absence of their consent.
Power may be defined as the capacity to get things done despite obstacles and resistance.
Examples of power can be threatening, influencing, coercing, persuading, blackmailing, etc. in order to get things done.
Weber said that authority serves as the foundation of social order.
Power based on authority is unquestionably accepted by those whom it is applied for.
Authority is two dimensional i.e. both parties agree
all of the forms of authority given by Weber represent an ideal type
that means that there is a comparison of what exist for a longer time and what does not and from where the systems and leaders derive their authority.
He also highlighted the causal analysis in the ideal type method and he said that legal rational authority is the most suitable form of administration for the modern society.
