💥 FINALLY 💥 Someone did a Gretsch review with a sparkling clean tone so that we can tell what the guitar sounds like.

Absolutely beautiful Guitars. Gretsch and Setzer seem to have a real good connection when replicating what Brian actually wants. 👍

Thank you for this video brother, I've watched it over and over again. You're playing is so inspiring and that guitar sounds so amazing that I ordered one. What gauge strings do you have on there?

Nice. Forgive me my ignorance- how does the amp figure in? They help determine the quality of sound, too, right? My experience is all acoustic, but as I get older really like a good blues guitar, also jazz.

Nancy Chace no problem, the amp will as you say add its own character to the overall sound. Some amps tend to break up into overdrive, or the distorted ‘dirty’ sound heard in rock music, more easily than others. Crudely speaking the lower the output of the amp, usually expressed in watts, with the more readily that will occur. For reference a 5-watt amp is usually classed as low output while a 100-watt amp is usually termed high output. Make no mistake, though there are plenty of loud 30-watt amps, so 30-50 watt amps are a good happy medium for most uses. Different amps tend to have (again broadly speaking), different inherent voicing in terms of EQ. Fender amps traditionally have a sound with clear, sometimes ‘glassy’ highs and lows and a slight ‘scoop’ or hollowness in the midrange. Marshall amps, by contrast tend to have a more prominent mid range. Those are just two basic examples, simplified for the purpose of illustration, and there are of course thousands of variations and other contributing factors from the speakers used to the cabinet the speakers are housed in etc. And of course, the guitar you choose will interact differently with different amps. But as a starting point (and there are many other possible choices), a mid-power Fender amp, such as a Hot Rod Deluxe, will serve you perfectly well for blues and jazz. You might also consider an amp that uses digital modelling tech, such as Blackstar’s Silverline series, which will give you a whole spectrum of different types of amp sound in one box, so you might want to try a modelling amp too if experimentation and discovering a wide and of tones is your goal. Hope that helps.

@@guitarist Thanks for responding. Not quite like sitting around the campfire with your favorite old acoustic road guitar, is it? It'd be a brave new world for me. A couple of things I'm too much of a beginner - you lost me with EQ. And "digital modeling tech"?
I imagine maybe something like synthesizers some years ago that could tweak an electronic signal to create a multitude of sounds. By now things must have evolved dramatically. Thanks again for answering - maybe some day...
PS. What was being used with these Gretsches? Beautiful guitars.

Hey mate, slightly different tangent but I’ve made a video called “jazz on a Gretsch” where I talk a little about.. jazz on a Gretsch haha you might get something out of it!

I was wondering the same. I was thinking re: the Hotrod, that you would probably want the tone at the amp set pretty high, since it apparently only has two variants of treble rolloff/cut (sort of a low-pass filter). I have a La Cabranita Tele with filter-trons and only a single volume control (other than the must-have pickup selector) and I enjoy the simplicity. As on the Gretsch I suppose, you can hook your little finger around the volume control and use it like a pedal to create swells and fades. I’m thinking seriously of getting the ‘59 Nashville or else maybe a Country Gentleman. I like the filtrertrons a lot. I wanted them because at the time I got the Tele, I was big into Billy Gibbons’ style of playing and especially his tone.
