  • On Thursday, July 6, 2023, the City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works, in partnership with Action Cleanup Environmental Services, carried out a thorough cleanup operation targeting a homeless encampment located on Grand Canal, Canal St., and Mildred Ave. in Venice. The primary objective of this initiative was to address notable health and safety concerns affecting both the unhoused individuals and the general public. During the operation, sanitation workers, wearing white hazardous materials suits, strictly adhered to safety protocols.
LAHSA (Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority) played a crucial role in providing homeless outreach services during the cleanup, offering assistance and support to those affected.
The cleanup operation involved the coordinated efforts of two waste management teams. Initially, Action Cleanup Environmental Services sorted through the garbage to identify and collect hazardous waste items, including batteries, urine, and syringes. Subsequently, Los Angeles Public Works sanitation workers took charge of collecting the remaining garbage.
To ensure the safety of all involved individuals and secure compliance from the unhoused population, Los Angeles Police Officers maintained a constant presence throughout the entire cleanup operation, which aimed to maintain cleanliness and hygiene in the area.
While the cleanup of homeless encampments in Venice has positive effects on public health and safety, it is important to recognize that it does not offer a long-term solution to the broader issue of homelessness. The City of Los Angeles is actively working on implementing comprehensive strategies to address the root causes of homelessness and provide essential resources and support to those in need.
The City of Los Angeles remains committed to tackling homelessness in the area and will continue its endeavors to find sustainable, long-term solutions.
Overall, the recent cleanup operation in Venice signifies a significant step forward in enhancing public health, safety, and the provision of necessary resources to unhoused individuals. The City of Los Angeles remains dedicated to its ongoing work in addressing homelessness and striving for lasting solutions.

And you probably either own your own home or have lived in a rent controlled apartment for so many years that your rent doesn't even come close to what the current market rates are. I don't blame these people at all for not having jobs because even with minimum wages of 20 dollars an hour you're still making half of what you actually need to put a roof over your head. And with wages being so out of whack in comparison to how much rents have gone up over the past 25 years there's really no incentive for anybody to work unless they're making over 100,000 a year. That's what L.A. has become, a city for people who make over 100 grand a year. Everybody else is either already homeless or living so far above their means that they might as well be homeless.

It's like a game of Whack-a-Mole. Ultimately, a society operates on the honor system. That's where the behavior of each person depends on him or her, not the government---unless that government has a million employees (such as cops) overseeing each square inch of a neighborhood. But a "c'est la vie" (or libertarian) attitude does make an already bad situation even worse

It is common sense, taking private property is illegal (shopping carts), arrest them and put them to work cleaning the place up. You are not going to eliminate homelessness but you could reduce it by 50%. Push out the ones who are just lazy or want to sit around and do drugs. But the problem is too many people are resentful of those that are successful so they use the homeless as a foil to be permissive to, and then rub in the face of those that have worked hard and have success. The homeless, whenever they need anything just walk into a store and take it because they know that the police have been given a stand down order by the elected officials. What a great society we have...

@@richardmorris7063 Good question, a lot of people complain few give any solutions. Manage the situation: minimize how much they can have if they are on the street, if you have more take it away and make them work for a couple of days cleaning up garbage on the beach. Roust people out of their tents on the beach at 2 am. Give them a ticket if they have stolen shopping carts, the cost being manual labor. Make the shopping centers chain the shopping carts together and release with a coin deposit like they do in europe. Have a holding center to warehouse people for 5 days if they break the rules. If they are on the street no dogs take them and dispose of them. Have doctor and nurse crews doing rounds. Give people the mental medication they need. Don't allow back talk, people have to many righteous rights here so they are too comfortable, zero tolerance. If you steal anything 5 day work crew. This would reduce it by 50% which would be a lot more tolerable and fair.

The Internet is now full of people that are renting out rooms in there houses for as low as $400 a month. There is always an alternative. This should never be allowed in any city. City's need to not allow people to live on the streets. They either are housed, or they don't live in the city. In other words they have to leave. If they refuse they would be arrested. Any type of housing provided they would have to work to pay for. It's City started demanding that people work for their services or leave unless they have a place to live this would not continue. Thank you to the City of LA, public works, law enforcement and everyone who helping to do this. We are all tired of living with the danger, filth and crime that comes with addicts and mentally ill living on the streets with no accountability. We don't want our city to go down like SF and Portland. Most of us have worked hard to live here for a lifetime, and imagine those people in those apartments right there? We do need more treatment centers but many refuse to do the work required to stay sober so this is on them. Why would anyone get sober if we let them do this? No wonder addiction has sky rocketed. We do have homeless shelters and places for displaced seniors and families with kids. No one was put out during Covid either and that made this seem OK. This is not a planned scheme from rich people, this is reality we all have to work or contribute to live here. Let's try to be in reality people.

If there is no where for these people to go, and they just move them, is not right. Now if there is somewhere for them to go, then yes, it is time. My heart still hurts for them no matter what the circumstances are.

Watching this 1 month old video from Pakistan. Never been to US or to anywhere else, but find this video very fascinating. My mind even wondering what these cops and the cleaning gentlemen must have had for breakfast, did they drive to work today or took a bus, when they were eating breakfast, were they reading newspaper or watching news on tv or mobile, the shoes they are wearing they bought them or provided by their departments, etc. My mind is crazy is like that.

The cost of this little operation would be absolutely mind-blowing and then would need to be multiplied thousands of times over before the problem would start to make change. These people need to be taken care of even if it means incarceration in managed homeless camps and a firm hand to get them back on track, no choice just compliance or jail.

@@Truelyblue333 Get a job where? As most people working in California have to drive 2-3 hours to work. As they can't even afford a closet. As they rent closets out for $2,500.00 a month. Why most the Employees at Google, Facebook etc....live in their cars in the parking lots at work.. Also the reason for the States traffic jams..

You are right one pup. I am with you 100%. However, the majority of people in California believe it is wrong to incarcerate them or force them into any type of rehabilitation camp.
