I'm truly humbled to see everyone's support for this build! I've just recently released all the CAD files I used to create the intake manifold for free on my site, linked below. Be sure to grab a shirt on merch.blackthumb.tv/ if you'd like to support my efforts!

Legend
Imma pick up a "This blows" shirt FOR SURE
in the future use sheet steel its very easy to weld and to bend and to work with
This is austrailan😃
subaru? no no
subarcharge? AwYeah!
Your builds ground me as an idealistic car enthusiast. Like usual, thank you for taking the time to show us
Thank you for your kind words, I hope to continue to live up to these standards
@@BlackthumbTV you could fit two superchargers on that intake manifold
So, supercharged flat 6 in a Legacy? HELL YES! Sounds freaking amazing and the fact that it is that quick without an after cooler is awesome and means you really do not need any extra boost on the current setup.
just run water injection and let her eat.
@@TheStruggleFestmeth water is fun. Unless your car gets struck with lightening the pump shorts out, pumping 7gal of meth and water into your engine overnight…
@willham1427 hahaha
That intake box design is perfect for integrating a cooler later too!
@@kw2519 Mate, that sounds like personal experience haha
As a big 3800 guy, I know and love that sound very very much! Sick build.
those park avenue ultras!!
The later M90 superchargers off the 04-07 GTP came with a drive-by-wire throttle body. Not sure the throttle flange would match that Gen 3 blower, but the 04-07 blower (gen 5 m90) are more efficient. Also, there is a tool out there to machine the snout down to run a smaller pulley, and all you need is a drill. As someone who has messed with a lot of GTPs, that blower sounds like its spinning about the stock speed for a 3800, so you can definitely go down a couple sizes on the pulley. The 3.6 is going to be way more efficient at moving air through than the 3800 could ever dream of being lol. Awesome build! Thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks for the info! I had also considered driving the blower off a custom pulley on the alternator to fix the issue, but I'm trying to contain myself as I don't think this engine can handle much more (given what I've seen from the turbo guys). The drill-tool sounds quite interesting though, I'll have to keep that in mind just in case.
5speed gonna break before the motor would be my bet in this situation 😄
This guys not lying smaller pulleys on these are crazy!
@@BlackthumbTV I was in the 3800 groups for a long while many years ago and that guy's not lying. The pulley was one of the main upgrades for the m90 supercharger. They can make way more power with just a pulley.
Awesome video, I think this may be the very 1st supercharged Subaru engine that I've seen.
Its never even crossed my mind what a boxer would sound like with a supercharger before, but now im in love and i want one lol
It sounds amazing
all you can hear is the supercharger.
This is epic. mad love for the ez30. some solid engine and transmission mounts would definitely increase the driving experience. After installing Kien mounts in my 04 6 spd ez30 legacy, the throttle response was so much crisper and the engine noise inside the car increased massively. highly recommended for maximum auditory enjoyment.
yeah that motor movement looked a bit extreme. how does the 3.6 compare in terms of reliability to the 4cyl?
@taylorhickman84 3.0 ez30 is a lot more reliable at similar power levels (240hp) than the ej. But not so much when boosted. The 3.6 is weaker than the 3.0
He does need better engine and box mounts according to the hood camera
😁🍄
People actually do stuff to the EZ30? I’m surprised? At that point get a boxster H6
As a Subaru guy and love your content. This is the kind of car shenanigans. My 1st swap was a JDM EJ207 in to a US Sti. Doesnt sound special but back in 2009 it was rare because of the US spec STi was a completely different ECU, sensors and wiring. I had to solve all these things myself, no guides, no kits.
Nothing against the bolt-on guys, I just need more of a challenge. Im blessed with the ability and knowledge to completely assemble, install, manufacture small things, wire and tune. This channel is gold to me. Thank you Blackthumb.
I’d love to learn that shit
For the sake of the hobby
Port the blower. You'll gain about 1-2 pounds of boost. You can do it at home. Would be a cool video. Thanks!
I'm so glad I stumbled across this video. I absolutely love oddball, homemade, DIY builds like this. I bet that thing is a lot of fun.
Looks like that engine could benefit from some motor mounts, other than that this an awesome build. I appreciate the enthusiasm!
Exactly what I was going to say. Maybe some poly or even aluminum mounts would be wise with how much that engine is bucking around now.
Looks like the Bell housing Pitch Stop Mount Bushes are gone also the factory Pitch Stop arm is pretty compliant.
It ties the block directly to firewall to prevent engine rocking back.
He could also use stabilizing struts if he doesn't want to go to stiffer mounts.
0:42 and maybe polish the headlights lol. car looks 20 years older then it should
@@fuzzjunky honestly for all the work you do polishing lights, you may as well get some new housings.
I'm impressed with $1300 going that fast.
Would be interesting to see some accelerating numbers before and after 😄
slow before, slow after, lol.
@@beeawesome7140 Did you mean, slow before and not as slow after? :-)
You’re content is so entertaining dude, you do such a good job showing your process. I’ve been wanting a classic jdm car that I can mess around w and learn how to do all this stuff. I wanna do all of this you’re doing but I’m on such a small budget and very little knowledge so you help a lot
I like it. You need to max out the stiffness on your mounts and soften up your suspension. You working with a split block so you need to watch an sti buck under boost. Try and hit that mark. It's something you can fabricate for a cheep awesome and effective solution.
Have a blast.
CZcams algorithm is a funny thing, I’ve been researching 3800 swaps and this video popped up, much to my surprise it’s fantastic, thanks for all the info brother and enjoyed this style of video. I’ll be watching more of your stuff from now on.
PS: that H6 sounds fantastic with that blower 🤔
There is alot of space to fill with boost. It would have taken longer but separating the big pancake manifold into individual runners would have helped power and response drastically.
It doesn't make as big of a difference as you'd think. I tuned a Miata with an intercooled supercharger kit, where the intercooler was after the supercharger/throttle body, meaning it would see both boost and vacuum. It did make a difference in both time to build boost and time to build vacuum, but nowhere near as much as I had anticipated.
This setup builds boost as fast as you can open the throttle effectively, and change to Decel/vacuum delay isn't noticeable vs the stock manifold.
Hey man! Just found you in my recommandations and i love it!😅
That is what car tuning culture is all about and not another guy who rebuilds a supercar (nothing wrong with that but to much here allready).
Knowledge, Skill and knowing what you talk about, i am impressed! Keep it coming bud! Greets from germany❤
my dads got a 2001 Silverado 1500 with a 4.3 v6. He got it with around 20k miles, and today its sitting around 335k miles. Hes retiring this year, and ive always wanted to take one of these old 3800 superchargers and throw it on an old TBI 4.3. This video greatly inspires me to get his old ass out in the garage and try it!
1st time seeing your content mate, and I have recently found a new love for Subaru's after pulling one apart....I work in a wrecking yard. They are so user friendly so I knew your video should be good. And it was awesome! You are definately a car guy! Not too sure about the LS swapped 8 you mentioned though, I had one of them and loved it for what it was.
Looking forward to catching up on your content here in Sydney, Australia. ✊🏻
This is honestly just so awesome. Love your channel and videos. The enthusiasm you have has to be the best part though.
This is an awesome build!! Engineering your own parts is pretty dang cool and the car sounds AWESOME!!
Great build. I love the creative design of the intake and your detailed description of the issues you faced.
That was such the best car video I've seen all year! I loved everything right from the get go: your confidence, comical anecdotes, your editing skills, your knowledge, that you were happy to share what you did, and you delivered your speech in a clear and concise way that was very easy and enjoyable to understand. Subbed. Greetings from Australia 🦘
Would love to see a scoop fitted over the super charger, to both cover and funnel air to cool everything , would be pretty neat
Sick build! Love to see people modifying cars that people usually dont , makes you a pioneer 😊
Adding extra dampening to the engine using stabilizing struts should help minimize the lurch during shifting. I think this will help it be even faster.
The fun part about just slapping it together with improvisation, is the chance to make it even better! Slowly work better and more proper parts into the project and really fine tune the performance. This is really cool! I love to see how people can just find a junkyard super charger and slap it onto an engine, never designed or intended for one.
Really wish there was someone like you that had a video up on supercharging the 2.8L 24V VR6 with a twin screw.
Super in depth and also concise. With good explanation and plenty of video showing how.
Lovely.
Deffo subbed.
Thing sounds Awesome!
Glad to see that smaller pulley did the trick ! That boost level should be good for 50% more power than stock, minus 40ish hp for the belt load. Looks like a blast to drive.
Congratulations on making dirt cheap daily look bad haha
Yep, she rips now! Would be fun to see it at 14psi four that double-ish HP feeling, but I gotta keep myself under control.
I think you would need a gen5 m90 for that, the gen2 on my 2.5l makes 14psi but man does it eat belts !
I like how poorly this comment aged.
I guessed like 230whp based on your comment. Then it goes and nearly doubled that
It's always good to watch cool videos about about cool cars when you're working on your own
The best parts of a supercharger are the increased power, whine, and it leaves the exhaust unobstructed for the glorious H6 sound. That is a hilarious, awesome and unique build; nice job man!
“You also just scan a ruler” holy shit I’m in tears this is amazing, that’s exactly where i got sold on your channel.
Eager to see what comes next!
Wow, what a great video! First off, i love the unusual project. I also love how explain clearly how you actually accomplished it, and you're right, you are hilarious! I'll have to check out some more of your content. One quick question, what kind of tuning did you have to do to get it to run with that boost, if any?
Any vehicle will need a tune when you modify it, especially when adding forced induction. Check out my video on ECU tuning for more info on why.
All my setups run standalone ECUs for what it's worth, I don't typically run factory engine management.
Sounds sick . Love the low growl and it looks torquey for a boxer.🤙🏽💪🏽🔥
Boxers are by Design more "torquey" than an = Inline 4 Cylinder. (no balancing shaft, no counterweights, not having to fight gravity)
And Turbo/Boosted Boxers even more so, Also able to put that power down due to AWD.
First time seeing your content. You’re awesome!!! Such a great video. I LOVE the shadetree, yet techsaavy way you went about the build. 👍🏻
This popped up in my feed today, so glad it did! Awesome build man!
Dude this thing is SICK, I love what you've done to it. My buddy's mom drove one of these legacies (stock) for about 18 years before it died and its really something seeing what it could have been. You got any more plans for the Gc8? I own a stock 97 wrx so I'm a sucker for Gc8 content and have to ask.
I may have some stuff going on with the GC8 this winter, but we'll see. I project-hop a lot heh
@@BlackthumbTV I look forward to watching! You should throw a lift on it lol
Turbo lag makes me pull my hair out when driving a WRX. Thanks for making this video, I've been wondering what a supercharged (Roots/Screw) Subaru might look like, you did a great job. I wonder if an LS swapped awd Subaru is possible
LS swapping is possible, but with the subaru trans it'd hang way out the front of the grille. I remember seeing one a bit ago, it didn't even have much of a front end left. Just engine
@@BlackthumbTV Slap a roots supercharger on it and call it a Suba-rhino
The Ferrari V8 Subaru rally car is an example. The engine sticks out of the front axle like an Audi, to a lesser extent. A front mounted heat exchanger in this setup will be tricky, because the engine will be colliding with it, which is physically illegal.
What wrx has turbo lag? Should try driving a big single turbo 1jz 😅
@@RRR_Motorsports I’d wonder the same thing unless it has a stock STI turbo as mine does and it lags but once it kicks in it’s way more fun for a cheap upgrade.
My man! This just popped up at the perfect time. I am just now starting my ez30 swap on my 2 door gc. The plan is to supercharge it with an s4 blower. You are a huge inspiration!
I can't wait to see what's next as this channel explodes. One thing: don't change the spirit of your videos as you get big! I love how you do everything: garage fab style with some new-tech productions like 3D printing, weird engine swaps and odd/novel build ideas using randomly chosen junkyard bits, and your humor/personality. Great job, I'm along for this ride onwards and upwards - subscribed!
Not sure how big this will ever get, I'm honestly surprised that this video got the attention it did. Didn't know so many people liked supercharged Subarus. I'll be interested to see where things go from here. I only plan to keep doing things like this, and if I had more resources from this channel I'd probably keep doing the same thing, just with more parallel projects.
Time will tell 🙂
I love the way you explain everything, top notch show material. You've earned a sub! :D
I had a 98’ 2.5RS from 98 to 2003ish. I used to roll with another 2.5RS guy every now and then that had positive displacement supercharger on his. It was pretty fun. It had fun throttle response turning corners with the awd that I never felt with a turbo.
I always wanted to drive one of the supercharged S4’s but never found the chance.
I hope the best for this channel, in depth and entertaining all at the same time ❤️
Wow dude! Top tier content. You are an inspiration to all the Garage Mechanics/ Fabricators out there!
This sounds really fun. I have a supercharged f150 and it’s addictive. Sounds like this is 300-350whp and equal amounts of torque. Torque is a beautiful thing.
Dude I am only 5min in and I have to comment on how much I'm diggin your wit. I dont usually watch videos like this all the way through but your easy to listen to and entertaining. Cheers sir and keep up the work! You've made this actually mad complicated thing seem obtainable to regular people like myself!
Both a super awesome, practical build & a wonderfully informational and edited video!
I've been searching for this type of thing for ages! Thanks CZcams recommended! I'd honestly likely buy this as a kit if you improved it and sold it, keep up the good work, subscribed! 🔥
I remember years ago I was searching to see if someone had supercharged a Subaru but there just wasn't anything. After some time I finally had the skills necessary to do it myself!
Also, the design files are available on my site for free. You're welcome to use them to fab one!
Man, such awesome work and creativity. Congratulations! I really enjoy the content of your videos. Keep up the great work!
Amazing build and video bud!
i love theway this thing lifts the suspension when u get into it ...awsome build def erans you a new subscriber!
Love the sound of it! Nice build!
Totally rad. Really enjoy watching your process and outstanding commentary.
My new favourite small channel car guy. I am so glad the algorithm brought me here. Im here to watch you grow man! Keep it up 🙏
Very cool build! Love the h6. I'm glad I found your vid.
Man!! I love that inspirational dreamers like yourself exist.
As a DIY Subi enthusiast with some questionable welding skills myself, I am always deterred by the naysayers; family, mechanic shops, Facebook Groups...lol!
Honestly, I know I'm not the only one that feels that they can create some really awesome stuff through their imagination but is quickly squashed by naysayers.
From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for not listening to the naysayers and truly built what you can believe in your head.
Simply put I am blown away by your imagination brought to reality. You truly have made be believe that I can create what my mind thinks up...within reason, of course!!
Cheers!! 🤩
Don't worry about the naysayers. It's your car, do what you want as long as you're safe about it
Just discovered your channel through this video, it's awesome dude! Keep it up, you'll get followers in no time
Awesome project, tons of info, gotta subscribe. Cheers!
What a great video! Fun idea, great explanations and overall fun to watch! 👍
I love the way you break it down. You would be an incredible teacher. I enjoyed the video and the build thoroughly. Thank you.
Great video showing all the steps and what it took!
that's really cool! you have to be able to use the power, that thing looks like fun 👍🏼👍🏼
Love the supercharger on a subaru engine! I looked into it once when I owned my 03 outback but couldn't find any examples of supercharged engines
This channel just needs exposure!!! Top notch please keep it up!!! Also maybe replace those motor mounts? Engine looked like it was moving
Seeing this build come together made my day!
Just found this channel love the builds! How have you not blown up yet!?!?!
Bro this is awesome. It seems to run so smoothly.
My new favorite channel. This is good stuff bro!
This video is outrageously funny! I've never seen your channel before, but I look forward to seeing more of you in the future; you've earned a subscriber. Great job and keep up the stellar production!
Welcome aboard!
love that quiet whirling-whine of the supercharger
I’m glad this video took off! Keep up the great work!
Awesome build! I clicked on this just cause how unique this project was lol keep up the great work!
This is growing to be my favorite car channel on youtube. Just a humble guy making insane things. You just gotta love it❤
First video I saw from the channel. Well done. I wonder if more performance could be had with a modified tube runner intake like the stock one. Awesome job looks like a hoot!
i love what you did here!!! awesome job brother
I ran an Eaton supercharger @ 14 psi peak boost. When i wanted more, and had already pulley swapped, and since im not "crafty", i opted for a 100 shot (dry) of nitrous oxide activated at w.o.t. as we know, superchargers make heat, heat removes horsepowers, nitrous is a bit chilly, the cooler air charge makes all those extra horsepowers and torques
Just stumbled across you, sick build and new sub😁
So cool to hear the Subaru growl under that whine! 😎 Nice job!
That thing sounds sick. 7k subs needs more such good quality
This channel deserves wayy more subscribers man keep up the amazing work! Keeping the real car builds alive!
Oh the best !!!! You scan a ruler !!! That's thinking smart !! Love it !! Looks amazing !
You are a legend man, just slappin shit together and making it work! Fuckin legendary!
One of the coolest diy builds I have ever seen on CZcams. Definitely just earned a subscriber
I appreciate your ingenuity and execution. Nice.
LOL that super trying to rip the motor off the mounts is hilarious!! i've never seen one with the pully so far out from the engine! now you have to go twin charged of course so you get the low AND high RPM boost. don't stop until the rods are sailing out sideways lol
I'm all to familiar with grenading engines, check out the video about the K swapped Subaru
I see many subscribers in your future, good luck and I'll watch your career with great interest!
Finally some one did what I have been thinking of doing all these years you have inspired me my dream subie is a forester with a h6 supercharged and sti transmission the supercharger would make it so I don’t have to worry to much about emissions and low torque boost for the win
Great work man, this makes me want to develope some cad skills
Ill always love the whine of a supercharged vehicle, it never gets old.
Got my sub. I Love this thing! It sounds good!
Awesome video thanks.
Definitely earned a like and subscribe.
This is bad ass! New sub right here :) love it mate!
That was very well done, I like it! You forgot to mention that it couldn't have happened without the super cool high-tech AC aluminum TIG welder! I have a couple of those superchargers laying around but I never did anything with them yet because I don't have the super Hi-Tech AC aluminum TIG welder
There's a number of key tools that got me through this. The standalone ECU, the welder, the injector flow tester... But the welder was the most recent acquisition and I got it in hopes to do this project!
Love these videos bro!
Props. Thank you for doing extraordinary things in an ordinary way.
This is badass, just subbed!
If i may: the design is very practical and definitely works for your project. However, if you wanted to improve the design of your super charger intake, you could make it more arrow like to help improve the ease of air flow.
As it stands, the intake works and very well at that. The air thats being pushed through it, though, has a LOT of right angles to go around in order to get into the engine. It may not provide much more boost than what you have here, though it would definitely be easier on the super charger in the long run.
Love to see DIY car projects though! Great job!
This thing is badass! Got me thinking about supercharging the Zubaru, well done man 😈
Hell yeah, that sounds sick. I love those roots blowers
Using what you got I love this!
