The reason it bends through at the hips is because there's actually some pieces missing at the bottom that make ik more rigid. There's supposed to be a 2x10 plate and a couple of 2x3 pieces to stabilise things.

You forgot to add the 2x10 and 2x3 plates underneath the body that stabilize the leg connections.

It was hard to tell, but I believe you are missing the 2x10 light gray plate that runs under the body and helps support the the legs to the body. I think that would also help with the bowing.

I remember buying this in toysrus back in the day. It was so cheap, and I saved up so much to buy those sets from that year. At the time, I didnt even know what UCS ment. Now its all parted out. Hopefully I can find the pieces and put that beast back together.
