  • Former Beatle Paul McCartney was trying to establish his band Wings when he flew to Nigeria to record Band on the Run. 2 key members quite right before and then when they arrived equipment in the studio was dismal and one day when Paul and Linda were walking the streets they were threatened at knifepoint by a gang of terrorists… Paul had to keep calm if he was going to save he and wife’s life. So along with his wallet, he handed over a bag containing two of his most prized possessions... a notebook of lyrics and a demo tape of songs for his new album. Neither of which he had copies of. These thieves, having no idea who was standing in front of them, stole one of the 70s greatest #1 hits. Band on the Run alone with 70s classics Jet and Helen Wheels. After surviving the ordeal this musical genius knew he either had to track down the stolen lyrics and tape or try to remember it and recreate it… Find out what happened next on professor of rock.

So, it’s time for another edition of our series The New Standards. This show takes an in-depth look into songs that transcend genre, decade, and fads - songs that are monumental touchstones in our culture and society. On previous episodes we have covered Sundown by Gordon Lightfoot, Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey, and Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin.
But today we are taking a deep dive into one of the coolest song stories ever..the Paul McCartney and Wings hit Band on the Run.
from London to Nigeria, Paul got a call from his drummer Denny Seiwell. The news wasn’t good. There would be one less member than expected taking the trip. Seiwell wasn’t coming. He was quitting the band. That was two bandmates gone in as many weeks. Shortly before, Wings had suffered its first split in the ranks when guitarist Henry McCullough angrily walked out on the band. Almost overnight, Wings had gone from being a sturdy fivesome to a shaky trio. The remaining three members were Paul, his wife Linda on keyboards, and Denny Laine on guitar and bass.
Wings was of course McCartney’s first post-Beatles music venture. The band was formed as a quartet during the summer of 1971, Paul, Linda and the two Denny’s. Wings’ debut Wild Life, was indifferently received by critics and was even regarded by McCartney himself as a disappointment. At the end of 1971, Wings would then add Henry McCullough. Early in 1973 Wings scored a double #1 in the US with their album Red Rose Speedway and the track ‘My Love.’ And later in the year they enjoyed more transatlantic chart success with the theme from the James Bond movie Live and Let Die.
But now the band was whittled down to three members. The discontent within Wings had been stewing for some time. For all McCartney’s protests to the contrary, for the most part the band democratic in name only. Paul clearly still reserved the right to veto any musical decisions he disagreed with. Said Laine, “Let’s be honest, he wanted to be in a band in a sense. But he would still have the final call.” But how could you argue with Paul McCartney?

This is one of my all time favorite songs. I had a portable cassette player that had big, clunky buttons and an earpiece for one ear that physically hurt after using it. We took road trips every summer since my parents were both teachers we had wonderful trips across the country, and many hours in the car. I specifically remember listening to Band on the Run, recorded onto my cassette player from my transistor radio, over and over. When the song began I was so excited about the mono musical journey I was embarking on. When the song was almost over I remember wishing the song would not end, then waiting eagerly as I rewound to listen again. There is a little drum riff that repeats on the song. My favorite part of the song was the last one when extra rhythm is added. I still can feel the excitement my 8 year old self felt as I listened to this, repeatedly, in the second seat of our 1969 Plymouth Barracuda fast back as we made our way from California to Toronto and back, watching the scenery and clouds. Very, very fond memories!

My Dad worked for Delta Airlines when we were growing up & everytime we would take a flight (we got to fly a lot for free back then), we were given those little headphones and immediately I would plug those in and start frantically start searching for the channel that I knew I would hear Uncle Albert, Junior's Farm, Live & Let Die, Band On the Run, Silly Love Songs, Jet & With a Little Luck. As a very young kid growing up in New Zealand in the 70s, I remember Wings dominating the airwaves. My mum and dad both LOVED music and played it all the time. Mum always had a radio playing in the kitchen and in the lounge so that we had music playing no matter where we were in the house. Dad would always have music playing in the car and we would sing along. They each had different taste in music which was great because I learned to listen to and appreciate all different kinds of music. Both were fans of The Beatles and Wings. Just this song on its own from Wings brings back so many memories. Like you, my dad passed away a few years ago. It was very sudden and unexpected and when I listen to you talk about your own dad, it reminds me of the wonderful conversations my brother and I had with ours about music. One of my favourite memories is of our dad visiting us in Australia when we were in our early twenties. Both he and my brother played guitar and I had always wanted to learn so Dad helped me pick one out from a second hand shop. I remember fondly the three of us sitting together playing (me trying to keep up) and singing along to the song were were playing. A few years later, my guitar was stolen but to this day, music is my favourite hobby and my favourite coping mechanism. When my dad passed away, my brother and I each got one of his guitars. Thank you for your channel and for using it to remember great music and artists and the myriad of wonderful stories behind them 🙏🏻

When they join the Columbia Records club, mom's first 2 purchases were Creedence Clearwater Revival Cosmos Factory and the Beatles Abby Road (still 2 of my favorite albums ever), as well as the 45 of Shocking Blue Venus / Hot Sands, and my stepfather got albums by Jimmy Dean, Roger Miller and Johnny Cash's Live at Folsom Prison. My musical collection is pretty eclectic, from folk, country, blues, classic rock, classical, some jazz fusion, metal, and even some punk and progressive rock. I only have 1 rap album, the Fugees The Score. My dad like easy listening and country. The one love I inherited from the three of them was Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, which I still have 3 CDs of. I also like to listen to Greek, Mexican and other ethnic music. True story. As teenagers painting our way through school in Michigan USA, my brother and I talked about this great song, on the top 40 at the time. I had recently come across a mag all about the Paul is Dead story from several years earlier. The Abbey Road Album, 28 if, Paul’s bare feet on the album cover etc. I explained it all to my little brother who didn’t remember any of it. And I wondered out loud if ‘Band on the Run was one big inside joke by Paul McCartney-reprising the Paul is Dead inside joke: ‘Stuck inside these four walls, sent inside forever, never seeing no one nice again…..like youuuuuu, mama…..’. Maybe that was referring to Paul being in a coffin! As if he really had died!! Wierd but fun conversation. We dissected different lyrics and eventually moved on.
Fast forward a decade or more. We had house guests at a new years eve party, including my newly married brother, and decided to play a game of ‘Charades’. Men vs women teAms. Each wrote down the name of a book a movie or a song. At my turn I drew a slip of paper, prepared by one of the ladies, with ‘Band On The Run’ on it. Remembering our conversation a decade earlier, I guessed my brother would recall it as well. I cleared everyone off the sofa and laid down, crossed my hands on my chest. Then as if in mime, my hands patted against the sides and top of my imaginary coffin….. my brother jumped forward and shouted ‘Band on the Run!’ He figured it out in 5 seconds. All the other guests were astounded. The clue seemed wholly unrelated to the answer- unless you were part of that great conversation in Gobles Michigan a decade earlier, against the soundtrack of a great McCartney tune. If you were there, you knew the language man! Secret handshake and all! Ah the 70s. What a great time to be young ! We had the soundtrack to live by. And to remember forever.

He has attended graduation ceremonies at LIPA, the performing arts college he founded and helped bankroll in 1990 on the site of his old grammar school. I can only imagine the incredible strangeness and thrill of receiving your certificate from Paul McCartney or being in the audience. As a rule extremely wealthy people often seem to have a few issues of one kind or another and sometimes lack empathy to others. Having watched quite a few interviews with McCartney in the last few years and thought about it, he seems to have remained remarkably grounded. He is always interesting and answers questions thoughtfully. I really like a lot of his solo work and some of Wings. Many of his songs are about love and understanding of human weakness with pathos never far away. I don't buy the idea they are too sentimental-it enhances them. For one of the wealthiest people and probably the most famous alive today, he has a remarkable ability to distil the emotions we all feel, and in the process has spread so much happiness around the world. Like George Michael, I suspect that it will emerge in the future that Paul McCartney has done a lot of good with his wealth in secret. It is not confirmed but it is believed he has given generously to Alder Hay Children's Hospital in Liverpool.

An intriguing story about the Nigeria trip, no doubt. It had become faddish at that time to go record abroad - and sometimes it just sucked. For instance, you can read about Elton John’s trip to record in Jamaica while doing “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” which contains the ‘middle finger to Jamaica’ song “Jamaica Jerk-Off.”
With the mugging of Paul and Linda, I really question their decision to stay there for 6 weeks, considering the state of the studio, the city, and their safety. I don’t know where the term “terrorists” came from in this story, however. A band (ha) of thugs looking to rob tourists can hardly be described as terrorists. They are in every country with high tourism, although Lagos was particularly bad in those days.
“Band on the Run” stuck with me even as a kid (the album as well as the song) because of the way it sounded. I was a few years away from understanding anything about recording & production, but I knew that “Jet” didn’t sound like anything else I’d ever heard. A very early example of what would steer me towards sound, light & video in later days.

I will meet so many that didn't grow up in the 70's that are amazed to find out just how successful Wings were. I always love to educate them. For example a woman I worked with said she started to listen to music in 1983. The only song she knew by Paul after the Beatles was Say, Say, Say. That was my opportunity to teach her about Wings and how good and successful they were. The numbers speak for themselves. They had 23 Top 40 hits. 14 Top 10's and 6 #1's. Silly Love Songs was the #1 single of 1976. They had 5 straight #1 albums. All albums studio and live made the top 10. Then you throw in the albums and singles before Wings. The McCartney album went to #1, Ram made it to #2 and had a #1 hit Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey. Another Day made Top 5. I hate when I read a article about Wings that mentions what the critics thought of them. Who cares what the critics thought? The ones that I taught about Wings just absolutely fall in love with their music and all are just amazed on how many hit songs they had.

Wings may not have been a progressive rock outfit, but the *Band on the Run* title cut has always put me in mind of the genre. So does "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey". The 2-movement form is something which I think Paul McCartney borrowed from the prog rockers of the day.
"Band on the Run" was one of my first tastes of Macca's singing or writing. I always enjoyed it, but reading the story arc of how he got from the breakup of the Beatles to this place in his life and career only compounds the importance of the song. But it was always the "cool" thing to say John was the better songwriter and the more relevant cultural icon. I had so many arguments sticking up for Paul (not that I had anything particular against John, I was a fan of all four). When my wife's German cousin and her husband stayed with us this summer and wanted to 'experience' Chicago, I had to diplomatically dissuade them from going to some areas. Its nice to think good of people and places you don't really know, but you have to sometimes listen to that part of your brain that says, "yah, that may not be a good idea." I remember listening to it on my transistor radio that was dangling on the handlebars of my bicycle. I would sing loudly along with Paul and Wings at the ripe old age of 12 years.

This is so crazy…last night I had this dream. I was on the side of a stage at a Who concert and Pete Townshend was standing before me…but they weren’t playing a Who song…it was the intro to Band On The Run…and Pete gave me some decorative Christmas bath towels.

I've seen you wear that shirt before but never made the connection until today. I finally looked at the characters and realized that's the web comic 1971. A great little strip about a bunch of youngesters forming a band in 1971. The year is important to me too as it's my birth year... LoL.
    But nice cross promotion.👍👍

In the “Get back” documentary, Paul is heard remarking that he rather plays his Hofner Violin Bass than his Rickenbacker bass. But when the Wings got underway, he played his Rickenbacker constantly. In fact, it wasn't until 1988 that he started using the Hofner again and still uses that as his main bass. So what happened?
Well according to Paul himself in an interview for Bass player magazine, it was a necessity, during rehearsals for the Wings' first tour, he'd throw his Hofner to his bandmate Denny Layne, so he could place it on a stand. Because the Hofner was hollow and very lightweight, it was no problem. But Paul's young daughter, Stella, saw her dad and Denny do so a couple of times and so assumed that the Hofner was meant to be thrown…
Which resulted in the instrument sustaining damage and Paul figuring that he should retire the instrument from road use. It was in 1988 when Paul and Elvis Costello started collaborating on the “Flowers in the dirt” and “Spike” albums that Costello urged him to have the Hofner repaired and start using it again.

    A memory about this song?
Sure, Profesor of Rock I have one for you!
Yesterday I turned 61 years old and after been married now for 32 years, my wife and continue to be very much in love, enjoying the trails and joys of life (together with our three children) and having music still playing a important part of in life so I welcome the opportunity to share a memory attached to the featured song.
Back in the early 70's when I first heard this song I was in my last year of primary school and was a shy young boy full fears and the expectations of entering into the "teens years".
I still remember the time when I had gone to a birthday party were everything had gone wrong!
My best friend and I were not the coolest kids in our school so when we got invited to a birthday party that promised to be full of the prettiest girls in school and the coolest kids on the block we were very exited.
Were arrived to a house full of decorations, good food and loud music coming out of a pretty new and expensive stereo record player. We soon found out that somehow my friend and I were the only ones who had accepted the invitation... To the disappointment of the birthday boy, no one else had turned out so we sat next to that vinyl record player to listen to a bright new record the birthday boy had received from his uncle, the record was Wings' "Band on the run!"
His uncle was in the merchant navy and had just arrived from a trip to the USA were he had purchased the album for his favourite nephew (just released in America but an exclusive to our Argentinian ears, since we heard it long before it was released in Buenos Aires!)
Band on the run was one of the first albums I sat and listen to from the beginning to its end, what a great introduction to my teenage years!

    Lol..
I was 4 years old at some sort of church Christmas function..
A woman was asking for people to sing Christmas songs..
I went up on the stage and sang the line band on the run repeatedly until someone stopped me..
    I vaguely remember..
My mom reminds me whenever she hears the song...
    That was 48 years ago..

This album probably is his best solo effort in Album form. His best single was the track from the James Bond film. That song might have been more popular than the film that year. Live and Let Die was also his best solo single that he has made.
    Paul definitely.

Agreed. The song was much better than the movie and always crank it up, whether it’s the original or G&R’s cover version. (Like the original better, though)!
PS….If you haven’t seen it, look up on CZcams when Paul played it at halftime at the Super Bowl!!

Great Video, Wings was my favorite band, I never saw them live. When Paul came to Pittsburgh in 1990, I finally got to see Paul live, but because of a sore throat he cut 4 songs from his set list including Band on the Run. I finally got to hear in in Cincinatti 1993 and again in 2010 back in Pittsburgh. Also, about 10 years ago I saw Denny Laine play Band on the run at my son's high school.
On more thing, Hellen Wheels was not on the original British release of the album (only in the USA).

I remember being a kid when Band on the Run was playing on the air. Kids would bounce around on the bus when some of the singles came on... that along with Uncle albert and hands across the water was a favorite of mine from way back.
