Discover the fascinating story of Life of Agony, a band whose roots trace back to the hardcore scene but evolved into a unique blend of alternative metal. Formed in 1989, the band's early years were marked by personal struggles and musical experimentation, culminating in their debut album "River Runs Red" in 1993, a groundbreaking conceptual narrative touching on theme of personal suffering.
Despite facing challenges and lineup changes over the years, including the departure of original vocalist Keith Caputo, the band continued to push boundaries and explore new musical territories with albums like "Ugly" and "Soul Searching Sun." In 2003, they embarked on a series of reunion shows and eventually released their fourth album, "Broken Valley," in 2005.
The band's journey took a significant turn in 2011 when Caputo came out as transgender, transitioning to Mina Caputo. This momentous event brought both personal and professional changes for the band, yet they persevered, releasing albums like "A Place Where There's No More Pain" in 2017 and "The Sound of Scars" in 2019, the latter serving as a sequel to their iconic debut.
With a rich history spanning over three decades, Life of Agony remains a powerful force in the alternative metal scene, continuing to create music that resonates with audiences worldwide. Stay tuned as they embark on new musical endeavors and celebrate milestones like the 30th anniversary of "River Runs Red" with commemorative tours and documentaries. Still love listening to the album River Runs Red on the regular! So many good songs on there
TRUE THAT...😊
Yep, amazing album front to back.
I’ve got it on vinyl, sounds so good!
It's an amazing album, but I can't take them seriously any more.
I always found Ugly and Soul Searching Sun better then the first album, the songs are much deeper. Also their last album Sound of Scars is also amazing!
I remember listening to LOA, Pantera, White Zombie, Biohazard, Vision of Disorder and Agnostic Front in high school. Very surprised to see a video on LOA.
I always wondered if anyone else caught that in the "Office". Still 1 of my favorite bands.
Hung out with Joey Z on their tour bus when I was 16 and he was one of the nicest people I’ve ever met. He encouraged me to never give up being a musician and said that there was no difference between him and I, and if I didn’t quit that I’d make it.
How'd you do? 45 and still at it myself, almost on Eulogy with Unearthin 2000, but in between bands,,...... and in a way Genders..... I connected with LOA RRR ALOT before I had a clue.
@@KelticKabukiGirl I made it far enough to be happy. Played in a few local bands and switched to drums at age 28, ended up getting offered a spot playing drums on a national tour but my family was getting sick by that time so I had to decline the offer. My entire family passed within one year so I felt that I made the right choice. It was enough for me to have gotten the opportunity to play in a well known band at the time. Edit: I’m 46 so pretty much the same age.
@@richardaaron4454 where did you live? I was in Since the Fall from 97-2000 and we gigged up and down the Northeast. We may have gigged together
Did he impregnate you on that bus ?
Another tired comment here to say River Runs Red is an absolutely incredible album. But I’ll be controversial and say that they actually peaked with Ugly.
Ugly is so under rated....but even raise you to Broken Valley. It was different, but great. Hell, the newer A place where there's no pain is great and has RRR feeling.
@@geeveisaacs2476 I really don't like how Keith's voice changed after Ugly. I really wanted to like Broken Valley, but I just don't. There's something missing. Maybe it's Sal? Maybe it's their spent youth? I dunno. I have the same issue with Soul Searching Sun. Bar a few songs, it is a very forgettable album.
@5:05 - "You went to "L'Amour", Saturday night. Red nails and lipstick, dress two sizes too tight" - Peter Steele
"So I sit home, stroking my bone. Empty bottle in my hand." - Pete's sometimes modified live version of the lyric.

Sal is a monster on the kit
River Runs Red is one of the greatest albums ever made, got to see LoA open for Type O back in the day, so glad I did
I've played with LOA a bunch of times. Fantastic group and people. You failed to mention their current drummer, Veronica Bellino, who in her own right is a awesome drummer, multi-instrumentalist and great person.
I didn't know they had a new one, IS she also trans or Cis? This is my Deadname account and in HS I was DEEPLY COnnected to RRR, years before I knew why. What era did you gig with them? I ended up gigging with some giants myself!
O.O They have a new drummer!?!? I got to see them in Manchester, NH in the mid-2000s…like a decade after I started listening. I was so over the moon, but I’m extremely loud and stopped the show for a moment so Mina could tell me I was loud. I apologized. She thanked me. I desperately wanted to hug her and thank her for existing. These folks and her voice saved my life time and time and time again as a teen. I am glad I got to leave with a largely memorable moment. I’m not much of a fangirl, but I mean…I’ve been listening to them since I was 14 or so, so I absolutely fangirl for LoA. Mina is just a stellar human. Over the years, I’ve kept an eye on her, had a couple of exchanges with her, and I’ve been impressed by her at every pass.
She can't even do a simple fill. The songs are so plain now without the actual musicianship that Sal put into them.
@@KelticKabukiGirl your “deadname account”? 🙄
She sucks 😂
This is a big chunk of my teenage years.Studio 1 in Newark NJ..Life of agony, type o,dog eat dog,25 ya life.Good times.
You MIGTH have seen my old band, we played NJ a bit, I gigged with 25 Ta Life and COming Correct, and like a ton of bands, my first opening paid gig was Madball at 15 in 1994. We also gigged with Dillinger Escape Plan without a name, then with a name and the self-titled EP, then The Show they were scouted to Relapse. Took Unearth on their first mini-tour, Hellfest, Boston Metalfest99, and Almost signed to Eulogy with Unearth but Skinhead Riots killed the local scene and Band. I was the guitarist and composer of Since the Fall (97-2000)from Reading PA. Then the Band Duke Hellington(2001-2005), which was oddly ahead of its time.
I was in a NYHC band from Staten called REASON ENOUGH. And funnily enough my first show was them was opening for MADBALL! I always wanted to hear about Sound 1. I record or did record bands and always wanted to know how Type O approached production especially the drum machine sounds. For our last record we recorded w Danny from Biohazard in his studio. I miss it. We disbanded in 2017. It’s weird being so entrenched in it since the 90s then it’s gone. DFL!
@@infectedgoat7775 MY FIrst Paying gig was with Madball and Mushmouth in 1994 at age 15. I was in Downtime then and 97-2000 the guitarist/composer of SInce the Fall from Reading PA. I remember your band's name, but ti 's been decades
And I was totally there at that show!! Good times is an understatement! SIGH!!!!
I love River Runs Red and Ugly albums.. will always be classics! Still in my cd collection ❤🤘🏾
Soul Searching Sun.
Spent many nights with RRR on full blast on repeat with a 64 ounce of St Ides, and a pack of Parliament sitting on 110 Street in Richmond Hill Queens.
Saw them in 95ish at Mississippi Nights in St Louis. It was a phenomenal experience. My friends and I still talk about going to that show.
I saw them play Bradford’s Rio (West Yorkshire, UK) around the same time and it was a fucking blisteringly good gig because it was on their River Runs Red tour. I fucking love that LP and it is easily one of my favourites
i remember being 13 when river runs red came out still one of my favorites.
I first heard of them on a Beavis and Butt-Head episode in '96
River Runs Red is a classic album.
yeah, their sound definitely changed after that.
Agony was my soundtrack in high school. Growing up in a suburb of Boston I would see them at least ten times a year between Boston, providence, Worcester and Hartford in the years 92-95. Joey Z was the coolest, Keith was always standoffish but funny as hell when he wanted to be. I fell out when soul searching son came out. The transgender thing never bothered me but honestly his voice was never the same.
I loved LOA since the 90s and I had to do a double-take during that “Office” episode like WAIT WAS THAT REALLY LIFE OF AGONY??
Wife of Agony.....
I don’t always like this channel….. but they are doing long videos on obscure/smaller metal bands. That’s pretty fkn cool.

Acid Bath! Yes, or CORRUPTED or METH DRINKER lol
E Town Concrete
The River Runs Red album is legendary. Sal Abruscato's drumming is amazing on it.
I seen them open for Type O Negative in Louisville Kentucky. 95-96 They were touring for Ugly. Killer show!
My name is the same name of that guy. I remember that incident when it happened. It gave me the chills when I saw it on MTV news.
Sal is and has been my favorite drummer. The first time I heard his style and creativity especially the subtle differences from Type O’s SDAH to OOTF is awesome and that breakdown in TOO LATE FROZEN blew my mind as a 15 year old drummer. I tabbed out all his beats on notebook paper and studied them. Then when I heard how he augmented the songs of LOA. It really opened my eyes to songwriting.
Saw them in 1995, became a fan that day. The bill was Life of Agony, Deftones, and Anthrax. Great show! Would only see them once more in 1997 with Cannibal Corpse, Anthrax, and the Misfits.
I’m 43 and been a fan since I first heard them in 93 . They played my life’s story and it made me get through my teenage years and 20’s . I still play the r.r.r album frequently. I’m happy for Keith/meena . He/she’s living how she feels and is happy it seems.
nice to see u included a cut from Budapest, keep it up
I don’t remember when I first heard of LOA, but the first time I heard their music was actually in 2011 when Heaven Shall Burn covered “River Runs Red.”
I had heard Life of Agony on a metal show on the radio on 97.7 HTZFM in St Catharines around 1997. I also remember Weeds getting some overnight play on the station and hearing This Time from River Runs Red, on their metal show Beyond 11. In 1998, I had heard all of River Runs Red for the first time and I loved the music and the 3 sketches. I wonder who the yelling mother was! I had heard that the boss who left a message on the answering machine was their manager, from an interview with Alan Robert last year.
That's cool you got into LOA through the show! I was cracking up when I heard that song being played. Ugly is one of my first and oldest albums, I was about 12 years old. Like a lot of the other early albums, but one of my all time favorite albums.
More than one member was in a band with Pete btw!!
Fun fact
The band Evan was in before he would be in biohazard ,threw him out because he was an untrustworthy drug addict and was NOT from the streets BUT a hippie from an upper middle class Jewish family.
I am 45 and only have 1 tattoo and its the LOA circle of skulls logo from River Runs Red . Love that band still . after River I thought they got kinda weak at first because it wasn't the same and caught me off guard , but soon I fell in love with ALL of their stuff !!!! The songs Here I Am ,Here I Stay and Drowning from the 1989-1999 album are two of my favorites
Great video, well done
I went to one of their reunion shows in NY.
One of my favorite bands of all time. Got to see them at an OzzFest. Loved it!
I vividly remember Keith Caputo, jumping off the bus, running right over to me, and pleading for a "boys room", back then, before going double 0 chromosomally abident, ha, man, met everyone over the years at my club - clubs, LaMour, C.B.G.B.s, The Rat, Troubadour, Seriously, Keith could sing his ass off! Great video!
Saw L.O.A for the first time on a promotional (acoustic) tour for Soul Searching sun, got to hang with the band, Next i saw them at Ozzfest, with Whitfield Crane, he did quite a good job. Seen them three or four times since and always liked them. Saw Joey play with Carnivore (last time i saw Pete Steele perform live, 2008 i think). Love all those New York bands.. Type O, L.O.A, Biohazard, Pist On, S.O.I.A, seen them all plenty of times... a unique sound (Mr666, 90s kid, UK).
Fun fact: you can’t actually read in a dream. You may think you can but what you’re seeing is random letters that will change each time you look at them.
Thanks?
Whered you get that? Batman Animated Series' Perchance to Dream episode?
You can actually read in some exceptions. Im a lucid dreamer myself and there are always signboards in my dreams that I can read.
@@WhatIsMatter101 cool. I’ve been lucid dreaming since I was a kid. I’ve gotten to the point where I can catch myself going into a hypnagogic state and slip into a dream. It weird though. I stopped drinking alcohol about a year ago and I’ve been lucid dreaming a lot less.
Im a gamer, so my lucid dreams get longer and more detailed when I play at least an hour before sleeping.
While I can read some signboards, the drawback is not being able to see people's faces early. They either have their backs turned, covered by something, or blurred.
Cheers.
source: trust me bro
Thank you. This is first Class Content, Greets from Germany. Super Interesting Story of Life of Agony. Makes me actually want to listen to their Stuff.
I heard them for the first time on festival, so much energy on their show. Also Joey riffs are so cool. But I heard about Keith some time before when he recorded song with Within Temptation
River Runs Red is still on my all-time favorites list!
An Army buddy of mine when I was stationed in Germany in 1996 turned me onto Life of Agony after playing a CD he got from a magazine that had one of their songs on it. I went downtown the next day to look for the CD. I had to hear the rest of it.
Keith's "Died Laughing" album is awesome too.
Lucky enough to of seen them open for KMFDM. Ugly is one of the best albums of all time as far as I'm concerned and Keith's solo stuff like Selfish. Just plain brilliant. Keith's duet with Sharon Janny den Adel is just a mindblowing amazing song. I do hope Mina can find the happiness she deserves.
Interesting, knew hardly any of that information. Thanks again
You’re welcome
Great coverage. I never knew the close ties Life Of Agony had with Type O Negative. Wow
RRR is the only LOA album worth listening to.
I like the early outputs very much bring back the old Times. Very interesting Story thanks for showing
River Runs Red, Ugly are great albums. "Weeds" is an amazing song too.
Agreed
LOA has kinda a strange place when it comes to my list of favorite bands. I can't think of another band that I have a similar connection to. Where I absolutely love their "river runs red" album from start to finish, it's definitely in my top 10 albums of all time. But other than a couple of songs here and there over the years I can't say that I’ve ever really go into any of their other albums. I can't really say why, even with some of their more recent albums where they went back to having more of a "river runs red" sound but they just didn't grab me even I was hoping they would. I can't think of another band that I would consider one of my all time favorites but when taking out that one album they're no longer even on the list.
We started in '89 in my garage in Brooklyn. Our first show was a Battle of the bands at South Shore high school. Then we headlined our first 4 shows in NY and NJ. We were Isolated Fear then Capital Punishment for a bout a day then Life of Agony. And Josh's basement was scary! Lol
The man himself
I love life of agony the river runs red was and still is one of the best albums ever I still listen to it all the time
You should do a video on I Mother Earth. Best underrated band ever.
If you lived in the tri state area in the early 90’s, LOA was EVERYWHERE. They wrote great songs!
Very true, they were one of the biggest metal bands going in Albany, everyone here loved them for the most part. I remember being shocked when I went out to school in Rochester that zero people knew them out that way.
First two albums are great
Soul Searching Sun is better than great, it's amazing!
I have seen them on Dynamo open Air ( Netherlands) and love them. Greetings from the Netherlands 👍 keep on headbanging 🤟
In 83 at 14 wearing a biker hat like Rob Halford me brother in-law 13 yrs elder asked if I was gay. I was like WTF!!! Why would you ask that? He said that’s what the gay bikers from London accessorized with, along with the leather & spikes. I grabbed a Judas Priest album & said this is fuckin metal & im dating a hot blonde girl. So I put 2 & 2 together with lyrics & stage performances to realize the Metal God was gay. So fucking what!!! He’s a great artist whom I luv & respect 💯%. He’s not a predator nor is he pushing it on anyone. Luv is so much easier than hate.
That's the key right there -"not pushing it on anyone". When I was 18, I worked for a company whose owner was bi and lived with 3 of the most flamboyant, stereotypical gay men you'd ever see. The shop was in the basement of their house, so I was around them alot. They knew I was straight and not once did they ever say or do anything that was crossing the line. Total respect on both sides. and smashed the stereotypes that I was brought up with.
But the current LGBTQ agenda of cramming it down everyone throats at every turn has probably made more people intolerant than accepting. You see it with hyper religious people as well. I have my own beliefs and things that I support, but I'm not on a mission to convert people to my way of thinking because it's what works for me or tell them they're wrong because they don't see things through my eyes.
Don't know why that's such a hard thing for some to grasp.
River runs red is so good..
I saw them with Clutch at the 9:30 club in DC back in the mid 90’s….man I miss those days sometimes

Not charting? Not a problem! I can't count how many times I have seen this kick ass band but it was......excessive let's put it that way, LOL. Comparing your home life to " That Scene in RAGING BULL"..- Man - I wish them Well... Seen e'm A Few Years ago in NYC.. They're Cool.
RRR FUCKING MASTERPIECE.
Early band to be from New York to sing and not yell. Most heavy bands didn’t sing, only the emerging grunge bands did. Unique group to have a New York style without being actual NYHC or thrash metal. It’s hard to write the pronunciation but it’s La- MOUR . The strong accent is on the MOUR. Not a strong accent on the “LA” . It sounds almost like two words as opposed to one
Would've been cool to hear about the different drummers they've had. The band wasn't just Keith /mina, Joey and alan

I found Life of Agony circa 2015. River Runs Red was such a good album, I got a t-shirt for it. I listened to the others soon after. Caught myself wondering why the singer was the same but sounded 'different' on later albums. I found out why. The later albums are ok... I tried 'The Office' out a few months ago & noticed that song too. I gave the series a chance for 3 seasons, & it's not for me.
