  • When Cam Summerson’s son needed his help, the only way he could give it was by losing weight.
Cam and his wife took their son to the emergency room with what they thought was a bad case of the flu. Unfortunately, the diagnosis was much worse. Axton had chronic renal disease, and he needed a kidney transplant. Cam immediately offered to donate one of his, but the doctors wouldn’t let him. He was too overweight.
“His diagnosis came along, and it changed everything. It changed my motivation. It changed my goals. The goal was to get healthy. The goal was to get to my goal weight.” Cam knew he had to be in the best shape possible so he could help his son.
Cam enjoyed cycling in the past, so he got back in the saddle, but he wasn’t losing any weight, and he wasn’t sure why. That’s when he downloaded the MyFitnessPal app and learned what he needed to change. “In my mind, I started exercising, so I should start losing weight, but I didn’t think about the intake.”
It was a long journey to get his body ready, but when the doctors finally said, “Yes, you can donate,” Cam did it immediately. And Axton was immediately a different kid. “After just two weeks, he was running around the living room. Everything in his body was working the way it was supposed to for the first time in years. He felt amazing. I felt awful. And I loved how bad I felt because it meant that he felt great.”
