- Before there was Castlevania Bloodlines or Dracula X Rondo of Blood, there was Super Castlevania IV. It was a redux of Simon Belmont's first outing on the NES, and one hell of an adventure early in the Super Nintendo's life. Here are my thoughts.

I never got the competition between gamers either. If you able to have both of SEGA and NINTENDO'S products you were very lucky indeed. I still play both Super Castlevania IV and Castlevania Bloodlines to this day.
It was a great time to be a fan of both
2 Castlevanias, 2 Contras, 2 Sparksters, 2 different series of Mascot platformers, lots of Disney platformers unique to each system like Aladdin, Hagane/Shinobi, Pocky & Rocky/Twinkle tale, I could go on
Some were only able to have one by circumstance. Others by preference. I was a man of many tastes, so I sought a complete experience.
Remember a lot of gamers back then were just still kids or teenagers and didn't have the means to acquire all consoles and had to choose just one.
Back in the day I could only afford and SNES but was fortunate enough to have the chance to rent Sega Genesis hardware somewhat frequently. I wish I also had the chance to fully experience Turbo GraFX 16 but that was not much of an option for me.
SCIV is my favorite game for the SNES. Bloodlines and Strider are my favorites for the Mega Drive and Rondo Of Blood is my favorite game for the PC Engine.
A real classic and one of the best! It was the first game I bought and yes first import too on my American Super Nintendo system folks!! ❤️ ⭐️ ❤️ Play it today with the sound bar loud!!
Sega Lord X saving the best Castlevania for the PERFECT time!
This is my all time favorite Castlevania!
Happy Halloween!
Mine too! I adore Super Castlevania 4. Best game EVER. 💖
That is easily my favorite snes game. I was really big into the series. Me and a couple friends used to grind through them trying to complete each one.
Utterly perfect “this is 16bit” moment for the system.
Definitely one of the games that made me buy a SNES to put next to my beloved Genesis. I've was huge fan of Vampire Killer on my dad's MSX2 when I was growing up in the USSR. CVIV was bit easy, but definitely an audio/visual feast and very fun to play. Contra 3 rocked too. Too bad we didn't get a Metal Gear on SNES or Genesis. That was another one of my MSX2 favorites.
THIS GAME IS A MASTERPIECE!! I was blown away when I first played it. and the music wow real instrumental sounds. question tho- why doesn't Axelay get any love? That game to me is another graphical and audio banger from Konami. Peace brother.
I was in junior high school when this was new, and a kid offered to sell me his copy for only $15. I didn't have the money, so I skipped lunch for a few weeks in order to save my lunch money, and soon enough, it was mine. When I brought it home and started playing, of course my mom noticed it was a new game, and busted me on skipping my lunches. I was grounded from playing it for two weeks.
Worth it. I still have it, of course.
This is seriously the best Sega focused channel on CZcams. It's cool to see you do other stuff too.
This game is pixel PERFECTION!
I agree. Super Castlevania 4 is by far the best Castlevania ever. 😍
Thanks for doing a SNES game Sega Lord X. This is an amazing game!
No problem. :)
Love the video, this is one of my top 5 games I've ever played on the SNES, it still looks fantastic today!
What's this! Sega Lord X doing a Nintendo game!?! Disliked and unsubscribed! Only kidding, it's great to see you bringing your passion to other systems too. There's another great youtuber called SNESDrunk who, despite the name, frequently features Megadrive/Genesis games. Keep up the awesome work.
I'll be delving into more systems more frequently as the channel grows. I played it all and have opinions I want to share.
@@SegaLordX PC engine woooo
Snes drunk is legit
Snes Drunk is the quality complement of SegalordX, both excellent, straight to the point, no gags, just passion and love for the systems!
@@DhinCardoso Snes Drunk is great for packing so much into short videos. Sega Lord X is great at making longer videos feel so short. Both great channels.
I love this game so much. It made my Christmas of '91. Made me a Castlevania fan for life.
I love how each 16-bit console had a unique and excellent Castlevania to call its own.
And as a kid, I never saw the consoles are rivals either. They both had so much to offer, and I'm happy every day that I got to grow up with both the Genesis and Super NES
Me too. My family had both.
Dude, I know you didnt make this video because of my comment on the genesis iteration, but it sure feels like it lol! Your the man! Love your stuff!
I smiled when I saw your comment originally because I had already finished this one. I am no fanboy my friend. I played and owned it all.
Jeremy Parish also did a video about this game today.. Halloween special, huh? :)
But, yeah, you do remind me a bit of SNESDrunk in that you have a passion for your respective 16-bit consoles.. but aren't afraid to show some respect and appreciation to the other side of the fence!
This was the first Castlevania I ever got into and for me the nostalgia runs deep with this one. Graphics, music and gameplay this one has it all. Hearing the first stage music blew my mind, as a kid I couldn't figure out how they put real music in a video game. As Lord would say this one truly was one from the Gods!!
one of the few games I actually finished which says a lot I would say. Nice solid gameplay and the music, atmosphere and visuals are a great coming together- thet music particularly is very special indeed. Not an overly difficult game but enough of a challenge still that it's fun.Tremendous achievement from this time.
This is still one of the best game soundtracks I've ever heard, period. Forget about generation, it's put plenty of disc-based soundtracks to shame over the years.
Great timing on the video.
I just started playing this game this week.
I missed out on it and man am I loving it!
This is still an amezing game while still maintaing the feel & gameplay of those previous castlevania games.
This was my best friends favorite game.
I liked the game then but now I love Super Castlevania 4.
I have a greater appreciation for the music , excellent gameplay and near perfect level design.
Thank the gaming gods I have a SNES Classic now.
Super Castlevania IV was an excellent addition to that, indeed.
I legit just finished Super Castlevania IV about 15 minutes before watching this. Absolutely agree on everything you said here. It's one of my favorites and keep up the good work.
Brilliant video. Never actually played this game , but now I'm looking forward to it!
Please do. It's a classic.
Keep up the good work on your channel my brother. Always entertained by your videos.
Amazingly enough ive had this game for around 4 years, i also purchased CV: The New Generation on the Mega Drive at around the same time, unbelievably ive never played either for more then 5 minutes (just to test they worked) i recently purchased CV: Symphony of the Night on PS1 and on testing that it worked, i instantly fell in love with it so ive made a promise to myself that as soon as ive finished Final Fantasy 7, 1 of these 3 is next on my "retro games play list".
BTW. I actually decided to purchase Symphony of the Night after watching your Saturn review. ;-)
I swapped my MD for my neighbours SNES for a week shortly after launch. Definitely the game that convinced me, alright, this SNES might have action games as good as the MD.
I wouldn't have wanted the 16-bit era without them both.
Great retrospective as always. I definitely love this game but its a bit easy due to the whip and jump control. I prefer more restricted gameplay for Castlevania. Rondo and Bloodlines are my personal favorites. Happy Halloween!
Just played this last night for Halloween love this game great job Sega Lord X!
it seems the channel can expand beyong sega, very solid review on this game :)
Cool video! I still have my copy and play it every Halloween.
Wish it was always Halloween so everyone would talk about Castlevania every day! Another great video, man. Keep up the good work.
I've been wanting to cover Castlevania for a long time. I just used Halloween as an excuse. :)
Love the video def a classic this is what pushed me to get a Snes def glad I did so many memories
And the interesting thing is that this isn't even a true showcase for SNES at all. It's stuck running in SlowROM for a start, so the machine is artificially gimped to 2.68 MHz, which is only 70% of its full CPU speed. That's a whopping 70% slower than the Genesis' and PC Engine CPU's for comparison, and 30% slower than even the Master System. And, while it certainly has some very cool graphical effects and such, and it all looks and sounds very nice in general, it by no means is pushing the boat out across the board there either. I think that's because the developer was more focussed on just making a great SNES launch game rather than trying to prove any major point with how ultimately capable the console was and such. And Konami did a stellar job in that regard. But it's just kind of crazy and cool to understand the SNES could have been pushed even further there too.
PS. I've never thought if Castlevania IV as being too easy. In fact, taking it out of personal opinion for a moment, I'd say it might even be a bit hard for the average gamer at times. But, back then we were all hardcore, so it was what is was. Personally though, I think seeing it through today's lense it's actually got just about the perfect difficulty for all gamers these days to appreciate to some degree. And, like you mentioned, there's the second quest too.
I finished this one, with rotating rooms and stuff (Ugh, tough as hell, even tougher than the Genesis one)
I knew our Lord X would make a video about a game on a Nintendo console. Let's hope there's more to come like a top 10!
the small rivl in the past and today gives us the best experience of each console
Fantastic text, a worthy tribute to this amazing game!
I love your videos, dude. Especially as you don’t talk a million miles an hour like a lot of American youtubers.
Great video. This game looks amazing. I owned a SNES back in the day but never played this game. I was aware of it though.
My favorite castlevania of all time!!! Game play and music from the gods!!! Awesome video from Sega Lord X.....or maybe NINTENDO LORD X!?!?!?!?!??!
I'll probably get lynched for this, but I liked this and Vampire's Kiss on the SNES. Why Vampire's Kiss? The amazing music.
Rondo of Blood is by far the best Castlevania game.
Great vid!!!!!
I had to choose only 1 I got Sega 1st snes a few years later this truly is one of the best castlevania games.
What can I say....? Awesome review! Super Castlevania 4 is PERFECT. 💖
He ain't lying, I beat it for the first time recently and SCV4 is amazing. I still prefer Bloodlines but SCV4 does many things very well, especially Simon's overpowered whip.
In 1991 this game was my life
😁🎮
I dumped considerable time in it myself.
I do like this game quite a bit but personally I think they should have kept working on it longer. It is very clunky, slow and while the whip dangle is useful it often just looks ridiculous and laughable. I actually don't like the rotating stages at all. Gimmick. Graphics and especially sound are fantastic. Stages are well constructed. Falls in at #4 in my Castlevania list.
I was just playing this!
00:43 LOL How could you? - I believe the vast majority of us were at the mercy of only having one system. That's how, LOL
You were at the mercy of one machine if you were a child at the time. Some of us were adults.
I didn't realize this was a 1991 game, that put's things into perspective. The only comparable games on Snes at the time were Actraiser, and Super ghouls and ghosts.
It was inpressive considering the time it came out, otherwise I've always seen it as just another great game, I did not grow up with this one.
Actraiser was AWESOME!
It really was! My point is that there weren't many games like Castlevania 4 at the time, Actraiser is more unique because of the mix of genres, I'm not sure which game I like more.
Actraiser doesn't have as much animation, but I think I might prefer its soundtrack over SC4.
Actraiser is a really good game. Love the RPG elements and music.
Sega Lord X - the movement feels a bit stiff and the graphics definitely earmark it as a release game, but other than that, yeah, solid game. Some fantastic music as well, great early example of what the Sony music CPU in the SNES was capable of.
My fav. game of all time.
The Sega Lord is dead.Long live the Sega Lord X!
Great to have a Sega fan give props where it's due to Nintendo. Time to put the Sega vs Nintendo thing to bed.
One day I'm going to finish this game!!! Don't know why but after the Basilisk fight I give up .
Awesome
still the best Castlevania game ever made imo and one i still play, often.
+ Sega Lord X You mention appreciating video game music - have you ever been exposed to the Amiga (in general, and the Amiga demoscene in particular)?
LordX did you ever have a chance to visit Japan ? If so a video would be much appreciated ,thanks keep up the awesome videos!
Sega Lord X hunting for Saturn games in Japan would be epic!
It's on the bucket list.
@@SegaLordX unfortunately i go to Japan several times a year, and the prices of the games have gone way over what can be bought on plain old Ebay : )
The turn over came 1 or 2 years ago.
@@SegaLordX Let me know when u r visiting Japan. I live in Seoul only an hour away from Japan. I d love to join u on the Akihabara n Mandarake trip. And I can speak Japanese too
@@dionb7945 In tokyo a boxed complete super mario kart sfc cost smthg like 30-40$ : )
Tourist rip off lol
How could you have never played this classic?
My favorite SNES game
A great game
I hope Konami rerelease the Nes, Snes and Genesis Castlevania games like they did with symphony of the night
I was disappointed at the final fight with Dracula not having multiple forms ,
Yeah, multiple forms was kinda his trademark. He was a bit easy too.
Good times
I'm confused and hurt but I trust in the Lord 😉
Castlevania 4 is definitely a quality game...but like any other it's not without its faults. What's up with the screen never scrolling downwards even if there's ground beneath the screen (or beneath you) resulting in a ridiculous death? Also, let's not forget all the slowdown on our "new 16-bit console" and how the whip virtually renders your sub-weapons kind of pointless. I think it makes sense why they brought back the original whip going forwards.
Still a very solid game, but I personally think Revenge of Shinobi is superior, deserving of more attention, more sprites on screen at once allow for more frantic/fluid gameplay, there are simply more mechanics to master in game, the level design pushes you to use them skillfully (two planes), fantastic score, it's a wonderful hard game though also not perfect as well. Great vid as usual though!!
i never noticed any of the flaws you mentioned.
Truly horrifying- fitting for halloween! Oh, not the game- Sega Lord X doing a Nintendo game! Positively ghoulish!
Хорошая игра.
I like this better than SoTN. Go grab your pitchforks folks.
Nothing wrong with that. Super Castlevania IV was an incredible game.
Which songs play in the background?
Sega sonic Nintendo Mario now sega and Nintendo working together
It's not a bad game at all but next to Master of Darkness I'll always see that as the best Castlevania game. Ha, ha!
This game is awsome, by all means, yes, but there is one very significant reason as to why Castlevania III is better. It's hard to describe. The lack of required commitment maybe: while CIII took weeks for me to finish, inculding ng+, CIV was more of a walk in the park. Great visuals can never compete with great content. As for this game, it has both, yes, but not like CIII...
Blasphemy! Jk, I’m glad to see u widening ur horizons
Love your videos, rising star. Your next on my channel
2nd best Castlevania game.
Nintendo lord X
NOOOOOO
What is a Snes.... A MISERABLE pile of SECRETS!!!
Great game, even for a snes. I prefer sega games of course:-)
I remember Angry video game nerd lets play of the game: when he first played it at the snes launch, he immediately thought "well i can tell you for sure this game will be the most polished one the system will ever see". He was very right.
I said in another comment that I just did not enjoy SCV4 very much. Even the music left me disappointed. But I see that the game resonated with many people. Not every game that is considered good will appeal to everyone. I do think it says something that Konami changed back to the more traditional feel with the games that followed. I always suspected that the SNES game may not have been as well received in Japan as Konami hoped, but that's my own speculation. As this is a video about a different system, I hope to see something like Sega Super Scalers on the PC Engine. That seems like a logical follow up to the recent, entertaining video about the scaler games on the Genesis.
Super Castlevania 4 is indeed my favorite game in the series despite being a remake of the original.
Hell, it's so different from the original, you wouldn't know it as a casual fan. It definitely carved its own identity.
In my opinion the best "classic Castlevania" (non metroidvania) , this game is almost perfect . Simon is the best vampire killer user .
I once fought a chicken.
Best Castlevania game ever made. All other games after this pale in comparison. (except rondo)
Blasphemy!!!
haha. I see you've run out of sega games to cover.
Not even close. Just branching out a little.
Not a fan of this Castlevania. It seems like they included gameplay mechanics just to show off the hardware. They didn't make the game more fun or interesting. It just seemed annoying and force. Mode 7 , going into the background, and the way the whip flops around. I prefer the Castlevania games with a tight accurate whip.
