- Sonic State caught up with Serguei from Intuitive Instruments at NAMM 2024 who showed us their latest innovation, the Exquis MPE Controller. Serguei explains that the Exquis is a highly expressive MIDI controller compatible with various software, synthesizers, and modular setups. The controller features a unique keyboard layout with a patented note arrangement, providing users with an intuitive and logical structure for playing semitones, thirds (major or minor), and scales. Serguei demonstrated the smooth and expressive capabilities of the keyboard, demonstrating pitch bends and expressive play.

I bought one recently, best controller I have ever owned. Friend of mine has a Linnstrument but it's in a completely different price range that is pretty much impossible for me to justify the expense of. The Exquis single-handedly cured my FOMO about Linnstrument, Osmose, Seaboard, etc and the note layout is probably my favorite I have ever used on any music gear, and I have been making music for near a decade.
Can you change the layout of the notes?
Great news!..do you use with Aum?..its cross complaint with iOS?…its looks as a perfect match, but i cannot see any video that is working…is it?..
l Exquis the best MPE affordable instrument . from france. I love it. and the Dualo also 🎉❤
finally an mpe controller that doesn't break the bank
We’ve had ipads forever
@@the_glovethat can play more than one note?
There are other mpe controllers that are cheaper, but in my experience, they have massive flaws, like having to break your fingers playing them like the QuNeo
@@SlaserX yep. You can even do it for free in GarageBand and have for like the past eight or nine years
I play garage band after and before having Exquis… what a sens surprise…
And controlling all presets of all DAW…
👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Dude's glasses is a nice touch 👌
Loved Blockbusters.
Great looking controller and just the right price for the features it offers. Really nice.
Thanks also Sonicstate for the terrific content you are publishing the week. You’re clearly working your socks off at NAMM.
I've got one and it's one of the best things I've ever bought. I love it.
I've got one! Got in the Kickstarter early on, after it was featured on SonicTalk funnily enough. I always wanted this 'keyboard' type having missed out on similar products years ago and the MPE was a plus. It's great fun and works well with Bitwig and MPE plug-ins.
What a lovely demo I’ve been wanting a mpe and have been waiting for something like this
Very cool and kudos to Sonicstate for excellent NAMM coverage.
I have long had an obsession with isometric keyboards, but none of them have really worked out that well. But, this is without question, the most sorted and usable design I've seen to date. Love this thing.
Was expecting the price to be a lot higher
Thanks for this. The coverage is fantastic 🎉
This is going to sell like hotcakes!! Good price. This is 66 pads, linnstrument mini is 128, Launchpad and push is 64, striso is 61. The hex buttons make the physical distance between the notes small enough to play chords in chromatic mode… unlike the push3.. but I need more notes. What this is perfect for is wind and string instruments that have this limited tonal range, and generally use high expressivity.
The features are not groundbreaking, many have been done before, but at that price it's amazing.
I like it, perfect to make house and techno music
Cool, nice price. Nice demo!
Linnstrument with a hexpad :) That was my first thought, but this does some other interesting stuff. The scale layout is ingenious!
Thank you for so interesting and little challenging musical instrument making more music for all can enjoy. FUNtastic!
Will be getting one when they ship,
I played with at NAMN. It felt pretty good.
Looks neat, and that price is also neat.
Seems like a cool NAMM show this year so far.
Mmm looks very interesting! Great price too.
sick!
VERY interesting!
Impressive
Purchasing now after hearing that price wow
Looks dope! A little too intimidating for somone like me, but I definitely see what they're doing and I like it.
I have a C-Thru Axis-49 and it has been great for isomorphic playing. I think I like the Exquis layout better though, and the additional expressiveness and lights are good too. Would be super cool if it could dynamically change which lights are on, by receiving midi notes from a sequencer. Like, send every key in a scale simultaneously, and it'd change the lighting pattern to match. Then it would automatically show the correct notes no matter which song I'm working on, even if the scale or key is very strange or changes mid-song.
Bit like the c-thru axis, love me an isomorphic midi controller 👍👍
Striso Board is still the best
Can the buttons be assigned to CCs?
Anyone know if you can flip the midi notes 90 degrees and have same layout as hyve synth?
Maybe I missed it but does this have a Tonnetz layout?
I can't get the order page to load!
Hi, I am interested in microtonal applications of the controller. Is it possible to remap the notes of the pads within the software for non 12 tone systems? Much like you can with the Sensel/lumatone apps or other isomorphic layout controllers
I want this too, but don't think that there is native support.
Does it work with microtonal scales?
❤
all those people who were hoping for a new maschine to challenge Akais dominance have been thwarted again
NI is probably working on more rap packs, crappy controllers, and kontakt overlays. Stuff no one asks for.
Ohh, lovely, innovative, useful and reasonably-priced. I predict a successful product (and a future purchase on my part).
After initial setup, is the app required?
No you can controle all DAW!!!
The app is only on pc or mac and is another product of intuitive instrument who will be more develloped, with sequencer andown looper and workflow…
Just the controller MPE is beautiful…
@@guillaumedespres2083 ok, so maybe a silly question, but this can for sure be used with an ipad as midi with usb-c, correct? for controlling with Logic Pro, Cubasis, etc?
Can you change the layout of the notes?
Interesting 🤔
Put me in mind of the TV show Blockbusters. I'll have an E please Bob.....
That’s funny he said they invented isomorphing keyboard which is used for centuries 😂
I’m an early backer, paid €150 for mine, waiting for it to arrive.
Was wondering about the same there. 🤔😆
He said it's a "new note layout". I believe it is different from standard iso layouts, but can't say if it's never been done before.
@@NickVu It is the reverse of the Gerhard for players that use it vertically.
Is this dawless compatible?
Does it have only 1.5 octave range? It would be quite difficult to make spread out chords?
More like 2.5 octaves. He plays a 2-octave scale at 1:41 with room to spare.
I see now, to follow the scale you use two pads every row. Still, if I want to invert a chord or add lower octave notes, I wouldn't readily know which ones to press, unlike a keyboard. Maybe there are tricks for this based on the local shape?
299? give me two
I’ll have a P please Bob 🤓
🤣 Beat me to da Blockbuster!
Can I have a P please Bob?
these will look great in the landfill they end up in a couple of years
I’ll have a P please bob😂
New Chromatic Keyboard with MPE.
299? wow i mean its still overpriced but compared to all the other isomorphic layouts, it's the least overpriced for hex grid (otherwise next best bet is grid layout of launchpad X)
really hope someone makes a TRULY affordable isomorphic or hex layout keyboard sometime though. I hope it happens before the world dies.
The worst part of the music community is cheap people who think everything should be free. Go develop your own instruments for a couple hundred bucks instead of being a parasite, $300 is nothing.
@@isocarboxazid the worst part of the music community are out of touch narcissists like yourself who call everyone that doesn't understand a value proposition "cheap".
This is a poor value proposition. You have no argument, just venom. Nothing new here.
