- Demonstrating the short take off and landing performance of a modified CH701 with VGs an the wing instead of leading edge slats. Take off weight was 880 lbs. More photos and analysis at www.stolspeed.com/content.php?...

Glad to hear from someone who has done it. My 701 -912 refirb project had a monstrous battery placed has far back in the tail as it could go. I want to go to a much smaller Odessy and move it closer to the cockpit to cut down weight and heavy cabling, Filling in the gaps, getting pretty much the same performance with VG's and upping the cruise a little all while reducing weight would be a win win situation. Thanks for your input Stol.
We tried placing VGs behind the slats, and could detect no further improvement in lift, but the drag from the slats still reduced climb rate.....
On the second point of retractable slats, not easy to do, but there was a company, Pegastol, making wings with retractable slats for the 701. Very good result, I've flown one of them. But the company is now unfortunately gone out of business, due to owner aging. I heard that someone in Alaska had bought the rights, but has not gone into production
Slats or VGs can pull the same angle of attack, so risk of dragging the tail is the same. No problems with the prop on landing - nose is way high, as you can see in the video.
Oh man, that's a cool little plane, I always wanted to learn to fly, you seem to be a very "Skilled" pilot, always admired you guy's !
The glide ratio with the longer wing and VGs is 7:1.
With the original wing with slats it was 5:1.
A slip with the VG wing brings the glide ratio down to 5:1 for a steep descent when required.
Cruise without slats is 6+kts faster, and stall speed is very much the same as with slats.
@LTF85199 Rate of climb is 140fpm better with VGs instead of slats. Cruise speed is 6 kts faster at the same power setting.
@LTF85199 For detailed test results go to the website shown at the beginning of the video, 'Slats/VGs' section
@STOLSPEED Google VGs and you do not get vortex generators. Acording to Wikipedia: VGS may refer to:
US-skacore band Voodoo Glow Skulls
Volunteer Gliding Squadron
Virtual Game Station
Vince Genna Stadium, a baseball park in Bend, Oregon
VGS means gate to source voltage in field effect transistors (electronics)
If you now have fwd CofG, and that could work. I tried closing those gaps on my Savannah, but it's CofG was already as far aft as suitable, so that moving the center of lift forward put the Cof G too far back....
does removing the slats and using VG's instead improve the cruise of this thing?
I like to fly my zenair 701 more with the slats on airplane (it shorter take off and more steep climb). I try it both with and no slats.
zenith awasome!
Yes you can use both VGs and slats. With slats still on, the VGs make no difference to performance.
Im no expert but i was wondering if you could put the VG just behind the slots? The high speed airflow moving from high to low pressure and then past the VGs would have to increase the separation point and hence reduce stall speed and increase climb rates right? What do you think STOL SPEED? Also could you mod the slots into slats (slats retractable slots not) like on the helio currier where the slats retract and extend at a set speed, this would have to improve the cruise speed right???
VG is "vertical gyros," too
if your ever in miami with this plane let me know im dying to find someone to get a ride
Im thinking about filling in the slats with sheet metal and thus perhaps moving the center of pressure forward slightly. This should reduce the need to have the tractor sized battery placed so far aft for cg purposes. any thoughts on this?
videoclipits. We should agitate for Zenith to produce a ‘cruzer’ wing for the CH701 the way they do for the 750. Not everyone needs to land in 100 feet.
What was the results?
Did it create the same climb performance as the slats while reducing weight, does it reduce cruise speed as a result?
@STOLSPEED fly it to the U.S.!!!!
can you run VGs with the slats still on? I'm think about building the tail for the 801 this coming summer :-)
what's the glide ratio of this plane?
Never had a tailstrike in 500hrs of intensive STOL flying.
is this airplane comparable to a cessna super-cub? cost? Im from alaska looking for a bush plane that doesnt cost as much as a cub.
boliver shagnasty. Costs less than the engine of a Supercub. And the Cub/Supercub types were made by Piper not Cessna.
Never had a tailstrike in 500hrs of intensive flying.
Noticing this chat is quite old , what engine are you using ?
sorry for the stupid question... but what are VGs? thanks...
That's a Rotax 912s.
What is VGs?
VGs is short for vortex generators.
Ask Google.
search for "youtube aspect ratio fix" - the proportions are wrong, the plane is not that stubby.
You could land this thing and not hurt the ants on the ground.
This aircraft is in Australia, so probably won't get to Miami, sorry.....
