Gilbert is a lonely postman whose only friends are the people on his route. There's Mr. Rostall, a blind widower and retired poet and professor. There's Aurore, who gets postcards from her boyfriend Eric as he travels around the world. And then there is Eloise, a lovely florist in the neighborhood who gives Gilbert a flower for his jacket every day, along with a lesson in the symbolism in each bloom and a hopeful sign of her affections.
When Aurore suddenly stops receiving postcards from Eric, Gilbert secretly begins to recreate them, recruiting Mr. Rostalle, who believes he's helping Gilbert express his growing feelings for Eloise. But the effort has unintended consequences, and Gilbert must deal with his fears and inability to express himself with Eloise.
Written and directed by Helen Alexis Yonov, this winsome romantic short delights with its unabashed sincerity and sweetness, weaving together an ambitious set of narrative elements into an unexpectedly wise lesson in courage, love and self-belief.
The film takes its time in developing its cast of characters and the self-closed yet sunlit corner of the world they live in. The visuals are a mix of California and Paris, with radiant colors and cinematography and a vintage-chic sense of place and design. Within this charming, cheerful world, Gilbert goes about his delivery route, the plot ambling at his sturdy, unassuming pace. We meet all the inhabitants of his community, each with their own stories.
The writing has many elements to juggle and it takes time to establish them, but it excels in exploring these pockets of stories beyond Gilbert, whether evoking Eric and Aurore's exotic, long-distance romance in a sweet little narrative detour or Mr. Rostalle's moving remembrances of the wife he long loved and then lost. These all surround Gilbert in a tapestry of the different stages and types of love, but it also makes clear that he has no romance to call his own.
The film features a performance by actor James Michael Tyler, known widely to audiences for his role as Gunther on FRIENDS and who recently passed away from cancer. Inhibited characters can be difficult to portray onscreen because their fears keep them from action, but Tyler beautifully portrays Gilbert's deep well of sensitivity underneath his surface reticence and shyness. His interactions with his friends on his route reveal warmth and solicitousness, as well as his hunger for affection and connection.
This loneliness likely propels him to intervene when Aurore stops receiving postcards from Eric, and Gilbert decides to compose some postcards in Eric's absence, making them seem as if they're coming from Eric. It's a sweet gesture, but it has unexpected consequences -- all of which force Gilbert to come face-to-face with his true feelings, but also the deep sense of inadequacy that keeps him from acting on them.
It would be easy to sum up the lesson of THE GESTURE AND THE WORD as paying attention to the little things in life. But the real wisdom in the story -- delivered with a lightness that belies its emotional richness, with a heart-warming ending all the more poignant for Tyler's passing -- is its observations on how love requires personal courage. It often forces us to grow in ways that will expand us, if only we summon the bravery to confront our fears. The blind man who can see brings sight to the seeing man who wasn't able to see. A truly touching film. I cried at the end. The ordinary can be exceptional.

Prashant if you allow me , i think Gunther had for a time the love he deserved but he wouldn't allow himself to see it because of what he thought of himself ... The florist gave him a flower everyday and explained to him what its flower meant he only had to listen to her to find it out ... But in the end yeah i think you are right :)

A shy introverted postman with obvious empathy of others begins to blossom in the presence of a gentle extrovert. The song "Mother" by Pink Floyd seems to fit his personality as he begins to tear down the wall. The young lady may be marching to the tune of Paula Abdul's "Opposites Attract". Hope it works out for them. It remains to be seen if the poet will break down and pay the electric bill, but I suspect he sees his defiance as his battle in the rage against the dying of the light. Also the globe trotter finally discovered the meaning of the song, "Please Come to Boston".
"Mother" is about how he started building the Wall, not tearing it down
@@tylorstreett7824 his mother put all her fears into him. Sheltered him from society. That is the wall. Then at the end he asked, did it need to be so high? The line, I won't let you fly, but I might let you sing sums it up. The over protective mother created a dysfunctional child that had no clue how to live a free uninhibited life. The wall was a self constructed prison. As the album progresses, the wall is indeed torn down.

James Gunther Taylor was the postman, he played the barista in Friends, sadly he died in October 2021 at the age of 59 after battling prostate cancer.
His depiction of shyness is so relatable...replying with simple Yes no at times for fear of what others might think....I love how he is having a good time alone in the bar

Now this is a Rom Com that's worth watching. It's beautiful.
Sad to say I saw myself in him so much... He reminded me of all the poems and all the letters I wrote but never sent, all the poems that I left unfinished... The ending was very touching but also just as sad for me, knowing that I've written so many personal notes to people that don't have a clue.

I found the film sad also. Maybe i would have felt differently if i had read the synopsis first before viewing, but i didn't. So the film seemed more about him using the flower girl to invigorate his life and make himself more important to Aurore. The ending seemed unlikely because it did not seem to me that he actually cared anything about the flower girl, and actually seemed repulsed by her, leaving during her dance. Imho a sane woman would have given up the ghost and not continued the flower giving after that. I felt bad for the guy who actually seemed to like her and want to date her but was ignored.
@@bernadette573 I would say overwhelmed. But her public gesture enabled him to risk sharing his book showing how much her actions meant to him.
He was trying to learn how to learn how to connect with his precious flower lady. His was learning techniques, words and gestures that he could use to communicate with her.
His attempt to write a letter to the disappointed lady was actually a sort of dry run, to see if he could write a letter to her that would cheer her up until she received her next letter from her man.
When the letter worked (the lonely lady acted happy) he decided he could risk trying to connect with his flower lady. Oh what tangled webs we weave...
I love it when the shy guy, or the underdog gets the girl. This is such a beautiful story.
This is my number one favorite short film. Caution: Do not expect any repeats - this producer makes the widest variety of short films possible. Each one is unique and different, some are very dark, so buckle up when you choose another. Each film is like an alternate reality onto itself. Transporting.

Fascinating that women wrote, directed, and produced this charming little film. In the modern world, women step on and kick aside men like Gilbert and laugh when they die of loneliness. What makes these women different?
Just an observation, an Orchid can live up to 100 years if not more. It just needs much care and attention. You have to constantly remind yourself as seasons go on how to take care of it. Bring it in or have it outside depending on your region and weather patterns. I think the movie conveyed that they are going to give lots of care and attention to each other. This was a great short, one of the best.

That was a fantastic, so well acted love story, seeing his hand on her shoulder at the end as she leaned into him was a special moment for them. A new beginning to their lives together, forever :)

yes! I saw his hand too, as well as how she leaned into him as they warmed up to each other. I noticed several little but significant gestures. How do they do it (actors)? Excellent examples of the little details that say so much and the "show don't tell" messages in how they looked at each other, or away, or posture, all of that was amazing.
When I realized it was the same actor who played Gunther it made me tear up..... what a great actor he was....

It's a shame that Hollywood won't do things like this, but then again, why would they? There's no product being sold, no thinly-veiled social "issue" to lecture the audience on, no political morals to shove down someone's throat. This is pretty close to the "perfect" film. Great acting, beautiful camera work, etc. My thanks to the creator of this short film.

As a Bangladeshi when I heard the name of Lotus of Bangladesh, I became emotional with this short film. I am shy and introvert like this postman. As other episodes of Omeleto; I have again related myself as one of those characters.

What an unexpected treat! This is a slow burn (in 15 minutes?), a red herring (is he a stalker?), and then, such unexpected emotions welling in me at the end. I'm genuinely surprised, still processing this short story... Rest in Peace, James Michael Tyler.

I don't remember when exactly I made this comment, but recently I came to the conclusion that I actually changed a lot about how I see myself compared to when I was starting therapy. I learned about the effects that my culture had on myself and how I thought about these cultural standards as "normal" when they just don't apply to me. I need to find some time to watch this video again to see how I feel about it now, luckily I barely remember the story.

One year after, here I am, my mom died three months ago...Alzheimer(?)...who cares...when death is the only possible way out to a 24/7 sadness the emotional aftermath is very hard to explain to anyone who hasn´t been in the same scenario...so...coasting I am...and this little short is just a tiny little dose of the medicine I need, I guess...that last scene, her gentle leaning and the shadow of his hand around her shoulder...magestically acted and shot...I loved it, once again.
