just want to say thank you for your channel! power steering went out while taking my dog to the vet. found this vid and was able to pull up to an oreillys and to test the fuse and luckily they had a replacement and was back on the road 😅.

Nothing like getting up in the morning and finding another great diagnostic video by K Diagnostics. Electric power steering is ok as long as it works but can get very expensive to repair. Thank you K

Thank you so much for this…been a maintainer on BFV’s in the Army for 11+ years now and this diag video came in clutch. Verified my fault and it’s my 125A fuse that’s blown. No power going to that stud at all. Thank you Fluke and a special thanks to K Diagnostics!

Great video. You saved me a bunch of money. My Dodge Darts steering was stiff with all the warnings. Checked all the fuses etc. but completely forgot about the 70 amp in line fuse on the pos cable. Tightened a loose connection and problem solved. Many thanks. 😊

yep. Working through an issue on a '13 (looks to be an issue in the R&P itself this time), but dealers just automatically default to needing new R&P. $2000+ for parts alone.

Thank you very much for your knowledge on the electrical power steering system for my 2016 ram dodge eco diesel truck .I was doing some work on my truck and accidentally shorted a tool on the battery and saw a spark by the battery terminal , after the repair i notice the steering was hard to turn , so next day i viewed your u tube channel and started trouble shooting as you did, my first test was using my test light and notice there was no power at the 125 amps battery fuse, i removed it and notice the bridge on the back of the fuse was burned out .I went to the dodge dealer purchase a new one for about 15 dollars, installed it and every thing was good as new .Thank you ,keep up the good work .
@crisbalto4416 My Pleasure! I'm glad to hear that the video was helpful!
I just did the same thing tonight, accidentally shorted a ratchet on the battery and saw a spark at the terminal. Now I have no power steering and low battery voltage 😅

It was my pleasure, unfortunately it did not solve the problem. I did change the fuse on my 2013 RAM Sport 5.7 HEMI, but the steering problem persist. I am not a mechanic, so when I saw the complexity to change the rack & pinion, it seems that I am going use a professional. But is so expensive, the part is said to be between $2,000 to $2,800 and that does not include labor, it us big concern. But regardless I did learn from your video, so Muchas Gracias once more. Have a great day.
Tony Morales My Pleasure! and Yeah these electric power steering systems are expensive to fix! Good Luck with your truck!
Tony, did you fix your steering system? I have this issue, and the part costs me $2,300 at the dealer.
Hola my Friend, Yes I did, unfortunately It was to much of a big job for my mechanical skills so I used the services of a local RAM dealership due that the mechanics of the area where busy and where basically quoting the same amount than dealer and did not include two year total replacement warranty that the dealer offered. I paid $2809.00 and the dealer recommended to change ball joints and other parts, totaling $6,800. So I just did the and pinion replacements and alignment. It came out perfect but a sense of frustration and distrust of the future of the RAM came upon me so I sold it after a week, providing a total disclosure of everything I had repaired during the course of 3 years of ownership. Since I kept in beautiful conditions it was fast and easy to sell. I purchased only two weeks ago a 2022 Frontier Pro 4X with 13,800 miles and still under warranty. I believe that vehicles manufacturers should be held accountable for frequent repeatable failures or broken parts that should last the lifetime of the vehicle, under conditions usage. Thank you for asking and sorry If I shared more info than requested. Have a. great day, Tony from Puerto Rico. Saludos
And this problem occurred from you plugging up the jumper cables wrong?
Great video probably save me lots of money, found loose wire from battery to fuse terminal because of this video. Thanks👍
@AK-lw9sj Thanks! I'm glad to hear that the video was helpful!
Thank you so much I started following what you were doing in the video and then realized the bolt near my fuse wasn't tight. It's weird that is what sent my battery and power steering light on.

That customer escaped a bullet. Glad they brought the vehicle to you. I know you treated them right. This Lucerne I just got done working on had a shop replace the water pump (3.8L) and the cooling system is full of sludgy rust and grime. I told him they did not flush the system and we should flush and clean the entire system out. I am getting it back this weekend. Some of the worse coolant I have ever seen. I just got this 2011 Jeep Laredo 4X4 that the customer says will not start. The tow truck driver told me he started it with no problem. I started it and drove it as well. Probably intermittent issue. Said she saw the battery light come on momentarily while driving. Getting ready to scan. No check engine light. Take care.
Richard 1 it sounds like you are working on some fun project this week! and yeah intermittent issues are the worse! Good luck with your project my friend!
Thanks for explaining in detail the way you went about diagnosing this issue.
Roberto Rodriguez My Pleasure!!
Very nice diagnostics but you probably should have disconnected the ground before replacing the fuse. This can also happen when you attempt to boost with another vehicle and place the positive booster cable clamp on either of the fused posts rather than the main post of the battery. It's not necessarily caused by reverse polarity. When the vehicle being boosted starts the draw exceeds the rating of the fuse causing it to blow normally preventing components from being ruined by excessive current, in this case current would flow toward the boosted vehicle but still overloads the fuse causing it to blow. Always boost from the main + battery post. Great video brother.
@neil50651 Thanks for your input my Friend!

Great video, learned a lot from a master mechanic. I have a new Ram and the service power steering light came on after 126 miles but the steering is fine, no loss of power assist (yet). Still under warrenty so I will take it to the dealer. This video gives me a much better understanding of how the system works. I am hoping it is just an ECM or EPS module glitch. Thanks so much for the video.

Good video indeed! What causes the electric power steering pump to continue whinning or running even if the ignition is switched off? It runs until battery drains unless I unplug the battery. This is for mini cooper s r53. It began after I was also jumping the other car and another jumper cable (+) snapped off and got attached to other cable (-) and then the issue began. The pump works as mentioned earlier and power steering is there but it just wont switch off. I did some research and discovered the FL04 fuse 100A which powers the Pump but since there is power going to the pump um confused. Its like something stuck in closed or so! Kindly advice'
Sandveld Off-Camp Drifters It Sounds like the electric motor on the power steering system is shorted! can you unplug it and see what happens, if it stops running after unplugging it then it's shorted!
@@KITS_Auto_and_Truck_Repair Thanks for your quick response! I would like to believe it will stop running if I unplug it, because I removed the FL04 (100A) fuse and it stopped and the steering got heavy. Now back to possible shorted electric motor, does this mean I might have to replace the whole steeering pump to address this issue? Any further troubleshooting hints before I take that route?! Thanks again!

Sir am currently working on a Peugeot expert 3 which is giving me serious issue, I have changed the injectors and ignation coil still the same , the problem of the car is that each time you start the car the 2 or 3 plugs will get wet the car will be seriously missing and will be shouting as well I have scanned the car but the fault code still remains, any help sir.
Am still waiting for your reply sir thank you.
I have a 2015 ram 1500 HEMI and I checked the fuses and both are ok. Yesterday I disconnected the positive terminal from the battery and the problem went away, but today it reappeared and I did what you did in the video and it didn't go away. Could the electronic module of the power steering be damaged?
@oliverrivera7138 the electronic power steering motor might be going out, I recommend you take it to a pro mechanic who can diagnose it for you!
Where do I get one of those light up wands to check for electrical current?
@2008israelramos you can get it from your local parts store!
I love my 2020 Rebel. Unfortunately I think Im gonna have to sell it. I keep on getting this “power steering unavailable” issue message that the dealer can’t figure it out and its costing me too much money 💵
@Alonzo01 I'm sorry to hear that!
Great video! Is this something I can do on my own or does it need to be reset through computers
@msalcavy8199 you will need a scanner to reset the codes!

My steering wheel is acting up kind of hard to steer but not to bad. So is it the pump, fuse or should I change the rack and pinion?
@user-hl3zg1zk2s I recommend you have it diagnosed by a pro mechanic!
Ive been driving mine without my EPS and the blinking light on for over 3 years. It's not that hard to turn especially when I'm use to it now 😂 I'm going to try this because I refuse to pay 4k for a new rack and pinion I have a 2013 ram 1500
@meganm3270 Lol!!
I have a 2017 jeep grand cherokee 3.6 with 4x4 can my vehicle possibly have the same problems. Because when the battery cable is unconnected and then reconnected the eps will work for a short moment and then it goes back stiff
Jeremiah Lucas it sounds like you have an EPS electric motor problem. or a wiring issue, I recommend you take it to a pro mechanic who can diagnose it for you!
Thank you so much
So if it's the EPS electric motor will I need the whole rack and pinion or can I replace that part please help I don't know what to do at this point
Are both fuses needed to run the power steering or is it just the right side fuse
Jody Etheridge Both fuses should be good!
Great video but all fuses had power when using test light but still no power steering still anymore suggestions
@cottphill check for power and ground at the steering motor!

this happened after a jump start? Did the other car's alternator start backfeeding into the truck's electrical system?

I Have a Chrysler 300 2016 and i have the exact same issue happened to me. My steering when is perfectly fine, my fuses are fine, relay are good, i am still getting the light on the dash. I have disconnected the battery for 1 day and drove more than 100 miles. Please help what it can be!!
@x.raffay4224 get your electric power steering system tested!
I have a 2020 RAM 1500 Rebel thats been giving me the same Power Steering Unavailable message. The problem is that it doesn’t have that battery fuse there. Anyone has any idea where the fuse he replaced here is located on the 2020 models? Thank you🙏🏻
@Alonzo1121 did you check all your fuses under the hood?
@@KITS_Auto_and_Truck_Repair I did and I could not locate that big fuse; only the 10amp fuse, but that one is working. I also took it to a mechanic, but they couldn’t find the issue. Before it would only show up a few times, but now it seems to be all the times because the message pops up every-time I start it. I want to try everything I can before I take it to the dealer, and spend all that 💰.
Thank you
Mine sat for a month and now the wheel is stiff, doesn't turn itself back when turning a corner, 2017 ram classic, my 2017 ram sport is doing it too, no lights on

I'm really hoping someone can answer my question on here. I have a 2013 ram 1500 and my power steering has stopped working also. The 10a and 120a fuses all check good but I'm still not getting a signal to my power steering at all. The power steering has worked sporadically from time to time but for the most part i get the same message on my dash as this truck. My question is this. Is there anything else I can check between the battery and the power steering itself to see if there is something else that might be the problem? I have looked everywhere for a proper diagram and can't find one anywhere. Also, I have checked the plugs that go into the power steering itself and they all are fine. What else am I missing that could keep power going to the power steering? Thanks in advance for anyone that has a suggestion.
korglp83 you might have a failing electric power steering unit! you need to check the control wires at the electric power steering unit and I'm assuming there is good power and good ground at the unit? you will need a scope to check the control voltages on the other wires, or you can take it to a pro mechanic to have it properly diagnosed!
@@KITS_Auto_and_Truck_Repair I will definitely be taking it to someone to check all the wires. Thank you so much for the response and for the advice. I learned a so much from watching your videos and I appreciate the knowledge you have passed on. 🙏

No communication at all with that particular module could mean that it is fried because of the jumper cable fiasco. That would be bad.
Richard 1 They got lucky only the fuse was fried!
Looks like the Alternator circuit is done. The PCM is not doing its job in controlling the Alternator. Checking a few more things first before condemning the computer. So after some research it became clear to me that the PCM is the Voltage Regulator on that circuit. Guess what? 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee V6, was a bad year for customers experiencing fried computers on these vehicles because the charging system malfunctioned. Take care
Richard 1 yeah! I heard those computer were pretty trash! did you check your wiring?
@@KITS_Auto_and_Truck_Repair Yes I checked wire continuity and the power and grounds as well. The ECM was bad. The only part of the ECM that was bad was the Voltage Regulator. I could fully field the new alternator and it was charging manually. Take Care my friend.
