Beautiful. My great grandad fought at the Somme, survived and won the DCM. I applaud the way folks of Ulster remember their heroic sons and wish in Scotland we did more of the same.
Alex Allan is the singer of this heart warming song what a great singer this guy is Sadly alex has since past away always remembered and sadly missed rest in peace
This song makes me proud. Not only am I Ulster American. One of my 2nd great grandpas(Edward Peoples) was a boarder reiver Ulster Scot who came to Ulster from Peebleshire. It is Boarder Reivers that are often considered the most militant strain of Ulstermen around.
Makes me proud to be an Ulsterman, today/tonight I have thought about my Great Great Grandfather who fought in the Somme, he was killed in Albert 1917. So many brave men
everytime I listen to this tune the tears run down my cheeks....a lovely tune but emotional. lest we forget the sacrifice these lads made on our behalf
It's a beautiful, beautiful song. Do you really believe these wonderful men died with bigotry and hatred in their hearts? They died because they wanted their children and grandchildren to enjoy the peaceful life they never had! From our wee farm in Co. Antrim, Catholic labourers joined up with their Protestant counterparts to join the 36th Ulster Division, changing their names so no one would know, because their friends and neighbours meant far more to them than any political or religious differences. They believed joining "Carson's Army" was the right thing to do! Ireland is a beautiful and friendly country - far too beautiful and friendly to waste our lives on bickering and fighting!
Ian Sterrett the tears are running down my face reading that Ian if only our brothers n sisters n friends could take those few words and believe what those brave soilders believed in .then we wouldn't be cursed with what this he'll were living in
My uncle Matt O'Halloran was kin to Thady of the Ballycuneen House and Dr Sylvester. So I know where you're coming from. They lived centuries before the Somme. .
@COLERAINELOYALSONS I too am Unionist from Belfast, and it strikes me that using words like "taigs, mickeys and tims" may not be the best way to show your respect for those Catholic and Protestant soldiers who died together at the Somme for our freedoms. seriously, how about doing some growing up.
@burnleyfan11965 ...thats absolutely untrue ..i am a loyalist from scotland and the fallen soldiers from not only the somme but from all conflicts are highly revered
Sadly the man in this song would probably have been told he could walk across and all the Germans were dead from the 7 day non stop artillery barge. Many believed it (or chose to),but those at the top knew for certain but they didnt feel like mutiny when the truth came out.And so the slaughter begins 730 when we emptied our trenches, within half an hour about half or more of our troops, usually by machine gun as in case of my Grandads cousin one of the Accrington Pals killed age 20
burnleyfan11965 if he was 36th the went over the top while the artillery barrage was still going on so germans couldnt get out of there dug out in time to mow them down but unfortunately he still probably got cut down as the 32nd couldnt break through to reinforce and secure the 36ths flanks other divisions trying to reforce couldnt get to 36th because german artillery was pounding no mans land cause little to no reinforcements to arive meaning the 36th eventually had to with draw from the gremans trench that day cost them 5000-5500 casualties but was the best attack on the first day of the somme
The 16th Irish Division fought at the Somme in the battles of Ginchy and Guillemont in September 1916.They were the polar opposite of the 36th, the 16th(mostly catholic)fought for Home Rule for Ireland not for king and country.People should also remember that in 1914 the UVF were quite willing to fight against the British army and were armed by the Kaiser with whom they had links.
sad too see all the anti-irish rhetoric being thrown about.we are all victims of ruling class thoughtless-ness. bit of respect for all the people who did in ww1 what we would be too selfish to do now.

If people learn to respect our elders they know a real war
sounds like platoon performing this song, for obvious reasons I cannot name names
