Ulster was the most uninhibited province with the most empty land, that's why it was planted in the first place, if it was full of towns like the south of Ireland it couldnt be planted. That's why almost all the cities and towns in NI were built in the 16th century onwards.

Also note that the clans of Ulster fought against others from southern Ireland , and before the 1700's the concept of a United Ireland was not invented. I was in Derry a few weeks ago,the city looks great,very clean and vibrant,too bad the Fountain area which is seen from the famous walls is so dirty and untidy looking with all the bonfire material strewn all over the neighbourhood, the place looks like a dump site,a colourful one at that with red white and blue kerbs and loyalist flags flying from the lamp posts,no civic pride or what?
