SAD REALITY of Why John Deacon Didn't Visit Dying Freddie Mercury in the End

  • Freddie Mercury died on November 24, 1991. He had been ill for much of that year as his health was declining. He spent his final weeks at home at One Garden Lodge in West Kensington, surrounded by his nearest and dearest. The inner circle of Mary Austin, Peter Freestone, Joe Fanelli and Jim Hutton were with him every day.
Brian May and Roger Taylor have both described emotional and upsetting visits to see their dying friend.
However, everyone who spent time with Freddie says the same thing - visits were not allowed to be upsetting or emotional, at least not in front of Freddie. Even in the final weeks, Freddie would be propped up in bed or occasionally downstairs, making jokes and shopping from catalogues.
    So, where was John Deacon?
Over the years many people have paid testament to how close Freddie and John were.
Brian and Roger both attested to the fact that John took Freddie's death the hardest.
Roger said it took years for him and Brian to deal with their loss, but that John never did: "John freaked out and decided he really couldn’t deal with being in the music business anymore."
Deacon's college friend, Robert Ahwai said: "John suffered from depression after Freddie died."
It is also difficult to watch the bass player struggle to control his grief during the Freddie Mercury tribute concert.
So why didn't John Deacon visit Freddie
Firstly, it was evident how sensitive John was. To see his friend in such a state would have been very difficult.
But this was true of all Freddie's friends.
What is more likely is that John and Freddie knew John would not be able to mask his emotions if he visited and this was something Freddie would not allow. Mary Austin once commented that if someone so much as welled up around him at that time, Freddie would avoid them afterwards.
Freddie was not insensitive or uncaring, it was the opposite. It made his own burden harder if he saw how much others were suffering. His mother, Jer Bulsara described just that in their last meeting.
Jer said that even though he was in pain and close to the end of his life: "He asked, ‘Are you all right? Did any of the media worry you?’ We said: ‘Don’t worry about us, dear’. He was so ill and still, he was being so caring."
So, both Freddie and John would have found any visit extremely difficult.

@@deborahallen3318 I don't know for sure if John is still handling the finances, I watched a video with Brian and I'm quite positive he said that Jim Beach was doing the financing because John has not communicated with either Brian or Roger in years. From that I can only assume that any communication all goes between Jim Beach. He's not in very good health, I guess they'll have to pick someone else if he passes away.

He was wearing a hat and keeping his head down but I was a pretty small twelve year old so I could see up and recognise the face. I was starstruck but I didn’t have the courage to say anything. Which is for the best. He doesn’t like fan encounters and he simply wants a quiet life. And I for one say we should give him one.

I understand if he didn’t want to go to the funeral, that’s his brother they were brothers as a band. It’s hard to go and see a loved one and longtime friend in a coffin. Like David spade didn’t go to Chris Farleys funeral because he didn’t wanna see his friend in a coffin. I understand that completely. It’s tough for some of us to see a loved one in a coffin. The man’s been a private man for the longest time as well.

  • @AngelicusImmortus
    @AngelicusImmortus Před rokem

Last I heard, from a Brian May interview, John didn’t want to see Freddie ill. Whereas Brian visited quite a few times, Roger visited him every other day - even buying a flat near to Freddie’s home.
Brian said, Roger was always the closest one to Freddie; they had a similar sense of humour. Didn’t want to do anything but music. They ran a market stall selling clothes whilst Queen found their feet, keeping them going financially whilst their first agent was ripping them off
(Death on two legs was written about the guy)
Brian and John didn’t like “I’m in love with my car” and didn’t want it on “A night at the opera” Freddie pushed and pushed for it to be on there and even got it put on the B-side of Bohemian Rhapsody on the single release as a bit of a “fuck you” to Brian and John as Roger had been quite upset by how they’d been about the track.
There wasn’t any bitterness about it though. Brian has said at various points that John and Roger didn’t get along and that John made some quite snide remarks about Roger because Roger married his first wife when she got pregnant.
Roger has said vaguely in an interview that he doesn’t know what John does with a sly “probably sits around counting his money”
John didn’t want them to change the credits of writer on a track to “Queen” as it meant they divided the royalties completely.
Also, there was a large bust up about the album “Hot Space” which the band let John take the lead on, neither Roger nor Brian liked it but they put it out and it’s Queen’s only album flop. Even the soundtrack to Flash Gordon outsold it.
But John was more interested in funk for quite a while and Roger and Brian were very much into Rock, so they indulged John for that album and after it crashed and burned Roger & Brian convinced Freddie that the sales proved the fans didn’t like them doing that style, which is true.
John was always the last to rehearsal, which he admitted to, and he would often turn up to find that - as he was two hours late - they had got a lot of tracks done without the bassline.
It’s also a well known story that for under pressure, John was playing the bassline over and over, Roger liked it, they went out for food with Bowie and when they came back John had forgotten the line but Roger remembered it (Bowie confirmed this - and also praised Roger for the drumming on it)
John never liked the fact that his own solo stuff never took off, while Roger was arguably more prolific than all of them - still putting out solo albums today.
So, I wouldn’t carry around too much pity for the guy. Queen’s roadies have said John was often the hardest one to deal with. His set up was basically plug the bass into the amps but he made a fuss out of how long to have the cables and so on. He only ever carried one bass with him and if something went wrong they had to go out and get a replacement often having to buy three or more for him to pick from even though they were Fender P-Bass every time.
For a large part of their music you can barely hear the baselines because John insisted on turning the bass down.
There is even a tape of them arguing about the sound you hear Brian tell Freddie to “fuck off” and Roger say “well I want to hear it” apparently that was about a bass line John had suggested and as Roger often put in the work on the drums to fit to the bassline John came up with or that was wanted you can see why Roger could get frustrated.
Dave Grohl once said Under Pressure was incredibly hard on the Drummer to get right and so far, only Rufus Taylor has been able to perform “I’m in love with my car” to any kind of decent standard, because Roger wrote the song with just the drums & no other instruments. Freddie put together the piano line based on Roger’s vocal and only does harmonies and a couple of “oh yeah”s on the track, you can never hear the bass line, even though John was given free reign to write one.
So, he was far from being the quiet one when the camera’s weren’t on them… As his tantrum with a bass at Knebworth showed!

I totally understand what their loss was like. Freddie Mercury accepted he was sick and going to die. My late mother RIP was the exact same as John Deacon. We lost our grandfather, my mom's father. It seemed suspicious. When we arrived to him there were investigator's there and we were told to go to Florida, Orlando is where we went. We are Italian and the Mafia was big and out there at that time. I was supposed to stay with him that night. Always the weekend my sister and I told turns being with him. He was found nude with a joke in his forehead. Oh, his head hit the corner of the of were his clothes were put. The police can be dirty sometimes, at least back then they were. He lied and said I couldn't stay because of a lodge meeting. He doesn't have them on weekends. My mother, oh something's wrong. She never listened to me. I said, ma we have to stay here and watch. Over and over I said it different ways with reasons. No, he's alright. I was going to walk back and I loved throwing pocket knifes. I had many weapons. After that my mother went down hill. A manic depression. I'd make her laugh saying, the ♊ Gemini is within you coming out. She flipped flopped with everything however, stayed sweet. Then she did the worst to my sister and I with housing authority. I was paying the rent and my sister was raising her son Troy. Me I misscarryed my fist son to be Christopher and I then had a daughter named after my sister Michele. I wanted to name her Natalia. I never wanted marriage or children because of what people you love change drastically. I never have been married. Out of wedlock. Uh, ooh.

In his final months Freddie cut long time friend Peter Straker out of his life...the reason apparently being Peter asked Freddie if he had AIDS. This, to me makes sense, it would really upset Freddie to really know what people felt towards him a d his situation - Freddie could live in a kind of delusion that everything is okay. Some terminally ill patients prefer this, as compared with everyone crying around them...or even just the suspicion they are upset... don't talk about it, don't have to deal with it.
Didn't Jim Hutton say Deacy was a bit freaked out at the '86? Ibiza party, Deacy asking - worriedly, apparently - what the blotches were on Freddie's legs: Jim said Fred was okay and that it was just sunspots (or suchlike). Perhaps Deacy suspected AIDS, and felt he couldn't handle it when the end came.
Besides, Deacy is a family man, how often did he visit Garden Lodge when Freddie was well? I've got the impression over the years that the band mostly just let each other live their own independent private lives...not long after Freddie died May and Taylor said in a TV interview that they didn't really know much about the private life of Mercury... Freddie kept his life mostly private from them.
My view is that Freddie knew he'd crack if those around him started crying and getting emotional, and so didn't allow any discussion about his health. He was an intelligent and sensitive soul, so I'm pretty sure that in very private moments - with no one around - he probably broke down himself realising what lay ahead... perhaps even some regret...I don't mean in a self-pitying kind of way, but the damning realisation that his life is ending, and there will be no more magnum opus such as Bohemian Rhapsody...and that his loved ones will be living a future without him...
