  • Welcome back, everyone! We're starting off into autumn with another medieval mystery: the Voynich manuscript. It's a codex, presumably from the early 15th century, written in a script that no one has been able to decode convincingly. The images of fauna, stars and people are just as mysterious as the text...
    The book is called "Das Voynich Manuskript", by Vera Pache and Klaus Schmeh. The publisher, Favoriten Presse, has many other beautiful art books in a similar style, particularly on flora and fauna (birds of Central Europe, blossoming cacti, a historical atlas of medicinal plants...) Link is at the start of the video!
    For German speakers, I can recommend an ORF documentary: Mythos Geschichte - Das Voynich Rätsel
    • Doku: Mythos Geschicht...
    Nail polish: Essie Fiji

      If I remember correctly they couldn't decipher it because it was written in an obscure 13th version of a regional dialect of Turkish. I believe there was a guy whose father spoke it so he is now working on translating it. But even before this we were still able to read a few words (like the name of the months for instance)

    This reminds me of the movie”Being There” with Peter Sellers. Maybe a very artistic mentally disturbed monk who was kept busy by his superiors with this book. As an artist I recognise how some artists will make nonsensical sketchbooks and there are comparative elements to this.

    The concept and mystery behind this Voynich manuscript is fascinating. Really like the alchemical connotations it reveals. Herbology and astrotheology are core Aryan practices is what immediately came to mind for me. Will explore more into this manuscript. Had not heard of it before so Thank You for revealing its mysteries. Seems to have its roots in central Europe - you guys have so many cultural and historical riches to explore on your doorstep. Really like this alchemical theme that seems to be emerging out of Prague with linkages to the English via John Dee and Company. Really beautiful book - Great Stuff 🪷✨🙏

    Knowing the golem stories, it somehow doesn't surprise me that this book comes form Prague.

    • @beth12svist
      @beth12svist Před 9 měsíci

      Things I think you should take careful note of:
      - It probably actually does not come from Prague, it just found its way there at a point in history when a rich person known to be interested in all manner of unusual things happened to live there. If it truly is from the first half of the 15th century, the situation in Prague at that point in history was considerably different from what it was during the reign of Rudolf II.
      - While the most famous Golem story nowadays is linked to Prague, it's not the only one, nor the chronologically first one.
      Regards,
      a Czech who is, to be honest, quite annoyed by popular stereotypes that erase historical nuance
      😅

    This immediately made me think of the "Otherside Picnic" manga. It's about a couple of college kids who stumble into (and back out of) this weird alternate dimension populated with lots of creepypasta-type monsters and plants that don't exist in our world, and one of the ways they know they're headed over there is that the writing on signs and things suddenly becomes illegible. If they take a book from this side in with them, it won't be readable while they're there; if they bring back a book that's legible over there, the writing is just gibberish once it's here. One researcher intentionally encoded her work notes by writing them down while she was in the other dimension. ...So perhaps that book was written in an alternate dimension and found its way to ours somehow. 😋 (And if that is in fact the case, actually reading it could affect the reader's sanity in some very bad ways, so it may be all for the best that we can't.)
    Jokes aside, while it is frustrating not to be able to read it, I kinda like the fact that people have been trying to figure it out for centuries and no one's managed. That's a very hard thing to pull off, so if it is some sort of code, I have all kinds of respect for whoever came up with it.

    the reason theres so many ubeskistan women is that polygamy was the lifestyle. it was normal for a man to have 3,4 or more wives. so it was one of the kawaja's(holy mans) job to discern different types of women to settle domestic disputes, remove hexes and such. when the arabs started conquering the sindh region (700ad) they eliminated the learned sinhdi scholars and kawajis, burned there books and forced the arabic language in there region. subsequantly it became the official language and in currant times known as the sindh language (descendant language of landa script) which is currantly written in perso-arabic script.
