Using Northern PIKE for MUSKY BAIT!?

- On today’s episode of Wisconsin fisherman Todd visited from southern Wi. We wanted to catch a giant musky so we thought the only way is big bait, big fish! We had four or five musky check out our pike but think it was a to early for them to feed on such big bait. We had some fun catching Smallies and pike!

Thanks for sharing the fun video Kyle! I was at a musky clinic about 5 years ago in Madison and they had a guide from Canada as a guest speaker. He recommended using pike for bait. I always wanted to try it; I'm glad you did! You were so close to getting bit. I would have been pretty amped up seeing the big fish swimming around my bait! Dave

Just found your channel so not sure if you've tried it, but I've used small mouth before, I like 9-11" and they work great. Tons of energy and really attract in the skies.

@@Wisconsin_Fisherman the lake I use them on is over populated with smallies. There's no size limit because of it.

I don’t know of anywhere in Canada it is legal to use pike as bait. I have seen musky come up and grab pike that you’re reeling in so I know they eat them.

My view is if it’s legal there is no difference between using them as bait or part of your bag limit to eat, some might not like it but any serious pike fisherman out there Have problie at least once in there life have been reeling in a small pike and had a Muskie destroy it reeling it in and can see why if it is legal some one would want to use them. That’s why there are different laws in different fisheries.

In WI you can use any legal catch as bait, but it counts toward your limit (use a perch for walleye and the perch counts toward your daily limit). Not legal in all states
Yeah, really not a fan of this despite it being legal where you are. It seems like a really unnecessary volume of suffering and stress.

As well as the pain I have to ask you to consider stress as well. A ple knows it is at risk of being prey. It will have experienced serious, unnecessary suffering.

No, here in Wi they are a very good at reproduction and are overpopulating many lakes. That is not a problem here. Me killing three is nothing. My clients this year probably kept 30 or so

@@TGS940 you have no idea how this works.. you asked about spawning. We’re working on opening a spearing season thru the ice. You can already keep 5 a day on most lakes. Some people call them a trash fish is this about the fish or me? Thanks
