I lived in NYC in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and left in 2000 but don't live far from NYC and go there all the time. For me, what's of value is places different ethnicities can meet and mingle. Places open and close and I love "alternative" spaces, not so much mainstream places. NYC seemed to get more and more mainstream during the 1980s, that's when the "yuppie" movement came into being. For instance, Greenwich Village seemed more touristy and trendy in the 80s than 70s but maybe in the 40s and 50s, the 70s were more trendy than then. Everything's relative. This 1990s version of NYC is the one I got tired of and left. So, I can't say viewing this does much for me. 1996 was just a short time ago in my perspective. For a younger person, it was a while ago. But this seems very much the seeds of what NYC is today. There was a bigger change from the 1970s to the mid 1980s where NYC was cleaned-up and prettified and lost some of its grit. But it gained a feeling of (relative) safety and such. That was the upside.
I was 23 and just graduated college and started working for a company right off 5th ave. So exciting wearing a suit to work in the hustle and bustle of Manhattan at the time. Sure my pay sucked, but it was so much fun being young at that time. Now I hate it.
I wouldn't say NY'c was at its peak in the 1990s. It depends. For instance, I loved to go to jazz clubs in NYC. In the 1970s/early 80s, there were so many jazz clubs to go to. By the 1990s they were closed. There were also a lot of ethnic restaurants that had closed by the 1990s. There are always things lost and gained with every era. Someone will look back at 2020s and go those were the best time, sometime in the future. That's just how humans are. We see things that we think are special in a previous time. But all in all, only some things were better and some things are best now. I would never want to go back to a time where there was no internet, or the dentist cleanings were much more painful than they are now, and on and on.
Back when Caprices, 1992-1997 Crown Vics, and Lincoln Town Cars drove on the streets. Now, it’s shitty Toyota Priuses and Ford Explorers! I wish I was around at that era.
1996: Gen Z started being born. Millennials (like myself) were ranging from babies to mid teens. Gen X were in their late teens and 20s. Boomers were in their 30s to about 50. The silent generation were in their 50s and 60s. And the greatest generation were mostly in their 70s to early 90s.
i was 19 in 96...A lot has changed since then....the silent era generation was around ..which was a good thing.....we have a very bad generation conflict now than we did in those days
