Jubilee Series Review by Sucharita Tyagi - Jubilee isn’t Vikramditya and his writers looking back at an era gone by and saying “oho hum toh galat sadi mein paida ho gaye, filmein toh tab banaa karti thi”. The gaze towards hindi cinema of the 40s and 50 isnt romaticising or fetishing that age of film making, I also don’t believe the attempt is to eulogise or pay a tribute. Even whehn caharacters are showing saing dialogue like “mainey hira chaat liya hai”, the attempt isn’t to ridicule its ridiculousness. Instead they focus mostly on the people in these stories giving them arcs and relationships with each other which gives Jubilee its real character. Nandish Singh Sandhu is made to look STRIKINGLY like a curly-haired young Prithviraj Kapoor in a screen test tape, Jay Khanna father, played by Arun Govil is a wealthy theatre owner from karachi now living in a Sion refugee camp, unki dialogue mein, unke gaano mein, unke shadow puppet theatre mein joh who camp ke bachhon ke liye organize karet hain, poori kahaani hai, no embellishments needed. Camp ki doctor, sadak par joote banaata ke benevolent kaarigar, the sikh gatekeeper at roy studios, Ram Kapoor as jovial financer, Sweta Basu Prasad as a wife along for the ride, conflicted between her duties and her sense of rigt and wrong. Movie star ka bhai desperate to get away from his well loved brother, ek Sindhi Jhalani joh trigger happy hai kyunki bantwaare ne usko kathor banaa diya hai, but everytime it comes to him ACTUALLY getting down to the violence he keeps threatening, he somehow ALWAYS finds a different solution in his heart, never actually shown raising a fist.

When does Nilofer become Geet I have no idea, but all the Nilofer+Jay Khanna plotline reminded me of the various doomed affairs of Raj Kapoor and Guru Dutt. They were madly in love with their heroines but couldn't marry them. While Wamiqa looks very much like Madhubala in some scenes, with her childlike smile, I assume that her entire plot was a tribute to Nargis.
BTW, who would have thought Aparshakti Khurrana would one day pull off such layered mature performance of such an introverted character. He will garner tumultous respect for his portrayal and his work in this series will be set in time. It will sure change his image from a comic actor, Ayushman's younger brother to a force to be reckoned with.

Jay Khanna’ character was loosely based upon famous film writer Khawaja Ahmad Abbas who had a fall out with Bombay talkies and famously helped launch Raj Kapoor’s career with Awara.
He was associated with IPTA a theatre company headed by Prithwi Raj. And yes Awara, Shree 420 and Jagtay Raho
    were Soviet inspired.

If I am not wrong Geet is where Nilofeur come to Mumbai from Lucknow and gets down on the station from a train and Vikramaditya Moatwane's grandfather was the producer of the film Andolan. And since I am a film critic as well (with social ketchup) I got early access too and I can say what a truly amazing series is this, absolutely love. Guys part 2 things will only get more tensed and better watch out for it! But I got guru dutt's pyasa vibe from Binod urf Madan Kumar and if you look closely Jay Khanna's various plotlines might connect all the plotlines of thehero's of that film era somewhere.

While the setting, visuals, characterization, acting, production values - all of it is great, I feel the show started losing genuinity after Episode 3. Post that, the plot becomes too convenient in many places, many threads are left unresolved and characters do stupidly questionnable things! It feels that some convenient actions are there just to somehow add darkness and twist to the plot, even when it us glaringly visible as a convenient plot device. Many places, it felt like key scenes were missing and the audience was left guessing what may have happened between the earlier event and what is being shown now. In many places, actions of characters are plain stupid. I have watched 6 episodes so far, not sure if few answers come later. Few examples - SPOILER ALERT - why will Sumitra go to her HUSBAND asking him to file a complaint against her LOVER'S supposed killer, when she knows that her husband is obviously not in support of her lover and her affair!!!! Why is Niloufer going out of her way to visibly help Jay Khanna in front of her Master/Buyer (for want of a better word) Walia's snoopy big-mouth driver, knowing Walia will obviously snatch away her perks if she is seen being friendly with another man? Also how did she suddenly then vanish and moved to Mussoorie to trap Binod Das without Walia raising any objection? Where is that closure scene with Walia where she should be seen breaking things up with him and vacating his house before moving to Binod? Walia was apparently all ok with her transition. Where is the clarifying scene showing that Binod was not afraid of Roy's blackmail and decided to still do Jay's film (he was seen being fearful in the blackmail scene, but then directly we see him arriving on Jay Khanna's set without showing how he processed that blackmail and decided not to pay any heed to it?) What was Jay's motivation in not revealing honestly to Sumitra that he witnessed the rioters killing Jamshed - why does he lie? What is Sumitra's plan in life after she willingly destroys her own studio for punishing Roy and Binod? And the biggest central plot question - why did Binod not save Jamshed and instead hit him while he is stuck in the burning car - was it out of sheer impulsive frustration or he was jealous of Jamshed for becoming Madan or he thought Roy will make him Madan instead???

I also loved this series..best period and musical series after long time..only thing I thought was they didn't do full justice with Ram Kapoor's character..they should have shown one heated argument between him and niloufer once he comes to know about her affair with binod and he throws her out of that juhu farmhouse..and later finally what happenes with him.. does he continues to work with Russians or simply leaves the business after spat with Jay or hires someone else to work with Russians
