      I loved it. I was slightly thrown off by the twist in the third act, but at that point we're pretty familiar with how Zain looks at life. He's a thorough opportunist who can't put the wellbeing of anyone above his own, including the woman he loves. The dialogues could've been better, and the lacking in that area was especially noticeable in the exchange at the end between Alisha and her dad. My biggest gripe regarding this movie has been with the so called critics on CZcams, who couldn't look past the "intimacy" portrayed in this film. Like, what kind of repressed people are we that watching a couple kiss makes us think that it's pornography?

      I am sorry but this film didn't do much for me. Didn't move me in anyway. Didn't lead me to having any kind of afterthought. Didn't do anything emotionally as well.

      Generally, I relate to emotionally dark psychological thrillers but can't very confidently say the same about this one.
      I felt Deepika (while she was really good), grabbed all the screen time; leaving almost no time for the other characters like Tia and Karan to develop. They were the people getting cheated on but we didn't spend much time on them. I almost liked the movie except for the sudden shift of genres because the movie was sold as emotional drama, which is not entirely true. A good example to consider will be Talaash. I loved the gradual shift of mood it had. It is one of my favourites. Anyway, I think Kapoor & Sons was Shakun's best work till date.

    One of the finest films I have seen in recent years. I wasn’t surprised by the reaction at all. When a film like ‘Dil Dhadakane Do’ (one of my favourite Bollywood film) can get okay reviews and average collection at box office, you know Gehraiyaan would suffer a similar fate.
    But I hope filmmakers interested in making similar genres in Bollywood don’t get discouraged by the polarising opinions films such as these get. It’s necessary for such filmmakers to keep making such movies to fine tune the audience tastes and make them understand their own relationship and family dynamics better.

    Really good movie! Not without faults but extremely enjoyable. I love how Shakun adds, rather explores layers of human psyche, behaviors and coping mechanisms.

  • @borin23
    @borin23 Před 2 lety +23

    Shakun - Gehraiyaan wasn't a masterpiece but it is a good movie. In fact I would go as far to say that this movie might end up being a cult film that people will talk about years from now. Domestic Noir, while a popular genre in the Western film world, is still probably a few years out for an Indian audience that watches movies for the masala. For me, the twists and the tonality of the film changing worked. But I also didn't go into this moving expecting it to be an all out romance. The focus on generational trauma really hit close to home. The concept might seem meta to some part of the audience but it is an inconvenient truth of all our lives (maybe not to the same murky degree as Alisha).
    Your collaboration with Deepika Padukone has to be one of my favourites. You really brought out an interesting quality in her acting which I have only seen in two other films of hers - Cocktail and Piku. I would love to see the two of you collaborate again and Nasser and Ratna Patak Shah too!
    Given your ability to write layered and messy characters, have you and your team considered doing a series where you could explore these character complexities more?
    @Suchitra - this was a great interview. It's always fun to hear about the directors/writers perspective on the movie and what went into setting up a scene.

    Omg I have been waiiiiiiiiiiting for this interview with Shakun Batra!!!!! This was such a pleasure for someone like me who was also looking for meanings in every scene. He was so right about the "conversation" this movie 'can' start - I say can only because so many people I know thought this movie was legitimising adultry! Which is the absolute opposite of what this movie is about!!
    I loved the fact that this movie was able to show how childhood traumas become a part of how we think and do things in life. How it engulfs us sometimes and does not let us do what is right for ourselves. The depth of these emotions overtake our lives and we cant see things objectively - thus the lack of hesitation on Aisha's part while flirting with Zain in the beginning which she knew could only lead to terrible consequences for both of them.
    I loveeeeeeeeee this film!!!!.❤❤❤❤

    Thank u so much sucharita ma'am.i find you so refreshingly down to earth and in sync with certain alternative tastes of film buffs like me. Gehrayiyan got such polarised reactions , more on the negative side than those who liked it, especially the final twist. But I for one really enjoyed the noir greatly and in fact found it much more daring and experimental than batra's Kapoor and sons.

    I think this is the best interview of shakun batra. Thanx to Sucharita.
    I did like the movie and it has been dealt well. My only complaint was in first half, too much time was spent on Alisha and Zain. The songs could have been discarded for the viewing experience. I mean the music is incredible, but not when I am trying to understand the characters. Plus neither the songs taking the movie forward. It did lose my interest.
    I wish instead, Ananya’s, Naseer Sir’s and even Alisha’s boyfriend’s character and everybody’s relationship with Alisha could have been explored more, if you want to keep the length of the movie same. Otherwise when rajat kapoor stated that “ you want me to take care of her”, I knew trouble is coming but still it took longer to arrive.
    In short, what I mean to say is that the movie could be more crispier and shorter. Because 1st part felt dragging and then 2nd part take on the grip back. Plus the cousin stating Alisha’s family secret was another bomb.
    Anyway overall good movie. And please shakun batra keep making movies like this. You don’t have to feed people every emotions. Thank you for leaving us with some thoughts and feelings about Alisha and even other characters and overall with the story.
    Kudos to everyone.

    • @TheShubhangigupta
      @TheShubhangigupta Před 2 lety +6

    • @sukhdutta7744
      @sukhdutta7744 Před 2 lety +1

      @@TheShubhangigupta But if you think about it, there are hundreds of murders (this was an unintentional murder) which go unsolved especially where a lot of money and influence are involved. Also, Rajat Kapoor’s character does tell Zain that he can take care of police which means he has enough influence to close a murder case with his money. So it’s not lazy writing, it’s what happens a lot of time in reality.

    I felt the stakes were low. If Alisha and Karan were married and then Zain enters their world - things would be much tastier. Also, I have a gripe with the way infidelity scenes (or any lovemaking scenes) are filmed. Slow build-up and then everything goes at flash speed with music blaring in the background. As a contrast, I would like to point out the movie Unfaithful.

    Me thinks this whole 'divisive' thing is simply hyped up by the marketing team of the movie. Honestly don't know why this whole non issue is getting so much airtime. It was a passable and utterly forgettable fare. Not remotely a movie with depth (ironic given the title) that warrants so much of post release nolan-esque analysis.
