Wish I could get you out to my place to rewire it! Tract home from the 1950's, where the main service panel just has the sub panel breakers, one subpanel in my water closet in my hallway, sitting right next to my water heater... and a 2nd one on the other side of the house. The wiring insulation is cracking, so I have to be extra careful every time I open something up, and make sure that the wires don't get too close to the sides of the super tiny boxes! I would love to be able to get rid of the subpanels so that everything was in one place.

Hi Michael, Sometimes sub panels are handy when installed in specific areas of the home where there are a lot of other circuits, or equipment. However if you ever consider upgrading your home to current codes and a larger main service panel then that would be the time to look at all of the circuits and the layout of the home to possibly consolidate the panels and circuits to one location.

Can you suggest a PC based software that can be used a wiring plan and house layout?

Any CAD type software that is based upon current codes will be able to create a circuit layout and placement of devices. This type of software is typically used by an architect who designs a home, and the "E" sheets are produced for the electrical layout from the plan set.
