    His feats invigorated Horse Racing once again. I vividly remember that June day like it was yesterday. At the time as he approached the finish line I began to cry inexplicably. It was years later when places like CZcams replayed all his Triple Crown races that I realized I wasn't the only one and still get emotional watching to this day. Woody Broun once said when you are in the presence of something marvelous you need to take away a souvenir so part of Secretariat's glory is always with you." These videos with all the great testimonials help me remember that memorable spring in 1973.

      Because of the lack of racing success of his offspring. His daughters' sons' were good performers and sires, the rest didn't do anything. You can breed crap to crap and get crap. Just because it can be bred doesn't mean it should.

    I don’t think enough attention is paid to the mare who gives 50% of the genetic material. He threw a great daughters continually. You wouldn’t have great sires if you didn’t have great mares. Look at somethingroyal. Secretariat got his stamina from his mama.

    • @GrainneDhu
      @GrainneDhu Před rokem +5

      Actually, the dam contributes just over 50% of the DNA to the foal because each foal gets 100% of their mitochondrial DNA from the dam. That might not seem all that significant until you realise that mitochondria are what power the cells--so a mare whose mitochondrial DNA has the genetics for faster cellular metabolism of energy gives all her foals an edge when it comes to speed, endurance and recovery.

    • @samyoung3592
      @samyoung3592 Před rokem +3

    • @GrainneDhu
      @GrainneDhu Před rokem +2

      @@samyoung3592 Absolutely!
      Horses only have about 250 mitochondrial DNA genes, which seems tiny in comparison to the close to 3 billion base pairs that make up their entire genome but those 250 genes have a disproportionate effect on the horse.
      Obviously Secretariat was not passing along his mitochondrial DNA but he consistently sired great broodmares. A good part of it was because his X chromosome carried the gene for the unusually large but not cardiopathic heart.

    • @MrErinholbert

    • @GrainneDhu
      @GrainneDhu Před rokem +1

      @@MrErinholbert It's on the X chromosome, which means that mares have twice the chance to carry it as males do. If a mare contributes her X chromosome that carries the large heart gene to her male fetus, then all his female offspring will carry the large heart gene.

      I would argue Bold Ruler was the greatest thoroughbred sire of all time. He lived to be only 17, but his influence was enormous and remains hugely influential today, especially through the A.P. Indy line. That horse, of course, was a son of Seattle Slew and a grandson of Secretariat. Bold Ruler through and through. Dust Commander, son of Bold Commander, a son of Bold Ruler, won the 1970 Kentucky Derby, thus beginning the domination of the Bold Ruler line during that decade.

      Secretariat, has had several offspring, that have won several prominent races, and titles. I know that he had a daughter named, Lady Secret, and I think that she won "Horse Of The Year" honors, twice, just like her father.🤗 Secretariat, also, won "Horse Of The Year," in 1972, and 1973. Also, there was an offspring of, Secretariat, named General Assembly, who won some prominent races, as well. The problem is, is that NO horse, can ever duplicate Secretariat. Secretariat, was (1) in a Million!😍
      Also, regarding offspring, the horse, Tapit, has a LOT of horses, that are related to him, that have won a lot of races.

      Claiborne Farm killed the greatest horse in racing. The HANCOCK family are jokes. My family owned two of the only fillies, great daughter and daughter of my great Aunt's beloved horse.....and she, LUCIEN LAUREN, RON TURCOTTE and Ed Sweat😅 groom all along with syndicate members were NOT allowed to see him the first time he foundered, nor were any of SECRETARIAT'S real family told until he had been foundered again because he was just a tourist attraction. By then he could barely walk. And people wonder and think he was treated well after he retired..........now CLAIBORNE FARM has a gift shop because SECRETARIAT was syndicated there. All some worry about SECRETARIAT was was THE HANCOCK'S said he was not a great sire. What other stallion went on to sire two fillies, daughter and granddaughter, LADY'S SECRET & WINNING COLORS who both won the DERBY, and were loved until the day they died. That is proof of good semen. Racing business is in big trouble today with lousy horses with no real talent, who do not have the correct genetics. Great horses like BIG RED comes along once in a lifetime. If at all.
