Somebody else already commented this, but I'll second it: Yes, we'd love to see another video in this style, but I'd love to see Eldar or another faction that has more rounded edges. Space marines and Tau tend to have a lot of hard edges and angles which lend themselves to this style, so seeing it on more rounded, less aggressive surfaces would be fantastic
I agree... This was really good, and enjoyed this more for some reason
Eldar or Tyranid, too many Space Marines etc all over the place
Would be even more fun if it was "beyond box art" by using their techniques but maybe using a more interesting color scheme, free hand a bit or effects.
An Ulthwe warlock with a robe that looks like it reflect deep space with galaxies etc or a Wraithguard with with effects on the head and stones looking like hidden souls :)
Yes Craftworld eldar models please!
Just want to add that i wanna see more of this. Eldar would be cool, especially if you could do a character as well as a troop, so we can see these same techniques 'dumbed down' for a unit.
Eldar, tyranids or even some Daemons. Please no Nurgle. I feel like Nurgle is a cop out. Haha
I need more noise piercings
@miniac do the bar through the bridge of the nose thing. Its a good look. You could also use it to hold your glasses up. Win/Win.
This was hilarious 😂
As a graphic designer who works in print, I feel like I can shed some light on the 'whole colours don't match the box art' thing....
2 Main reasons the printed art doesn't match the paints they said they used:
1- The graphic designer who edited the photo of the mini bumped up the saturation and contrast when preparing the photo to be placed into the print material (making the photo more vibrant and engaging, but reducing the accuracy of the colours)
2- Printing full colour (CMYK) is notoriously bad for high variance in printed material, the same art printed on two different process printers can vary greatly in the final result. Brands normally get around this by using pantone swatches, but you cant print a photo with pantones.
The main reason the box art doesn't match the paints the box art recommends using is because it is just that; a recommendation to get close to the box art result. The box art is painted by the 'Eavy Metal team and they use a lot more (and different) colours and techniques than is practical for the casual hobbyist. And GW has compromised by simplifying the recipes and recommending colours that get you close enough. You can check out Infernalbrush who used to work as an 'Eavy Metal painter to both see the process and what paints are actually used.
My art gf suggested just that, that they probably just modify the picture in photoshop afterwards so it's never going to look like the cover art with their listed suggested paints
Jon picks up a paintbrush and magic happens. Even watching everything you do, I still can't replicate your level. ❤️ Thanks for letting us sit it and and watch you spend spell slots.
I'd love to see how you handle 'Eavy metal metallics and OSL, so a Necron would be really cool to see. Plus I rarely see Necron painting videos anyway, so it'd be a unique video in itself.
I saw a post on reddit where they actually spoke to the person who painted the Royal Warden and other Necrons and this was their recipe:
(Brass parts)
-Base Runelord Brass,
-Shade with Cryptek Armourshade Gloss all over,
-Reikland Fleshshade and Drucii 1:1 mix in cracks,
-Lighter parts repainted with Runelord Brass
-(when needed) further highlight with Canoptek Alloy and Stormhost Silver
(Silver Parts)
-Base Canoptek Alloy
-Glaze Runelord Brass
-Shade dark areas with Reikland
-Shade Cracks with Reikland+Wyldwood 1:1 mix
-Optional Glaze with Stormhost if too dark
(Black Metal Joints)
-Base Iron Warrior+Abaddon Black 1:1 mix
-'Eavy Shade of Nuln Oil
-Thick Highlight Iron Warrior+Administratum Grey 2:1 mix
-Spot Highlight white scar
(Normal Metal)
-Base Iron Warrior
-Shade Agrax+Abaddon 2:1 mix
-Highlight Iron Warrior+Stormhost 1:1 mix
-Highlight just Stormhost
(Sharp blades)
-Base Iron Warrior+Stormhost 1:1
-Shade Agrax
-Highlight Iron Warrior+Stormhost 1:1
-Highlight Stormhost
(Green Orbs)
-Base Corax
-Layer Moot Green+Flashgits Yellow+White Scar 1:1:1 mix
-Glaze moot
-Deep Recess shade Caliban Green
(Black on the guns)
-Base Corvus black
-Shade Nuln Oil
-Highlight Incubi darkness
-Highlight Eshin grey
-Highlight Fenrisian+Eshin 1:1
-Spot Fenrisian
(Cables)
-Base Moot+Waaagh! Flesh 1:1
-Shade Caliban
-Highlight Moot
-Highlight Moot+Flashgits+White Scar 1:1:1
-Spot White Scar
(Dark Metal)
-Base Iron Warriors
-Shade Bascillicanum grey
-Optional spots of Iron Warrior and stormhost.
(Gold if you're doing the Royal Warden)
-Base Retributor Armour
-Shade Reikland
-Highlight Liberator Gold
-Highlight Stormhost+Liberator 1:1
-Spot highlight Stormhost
I'm not even a necron player and I'd like to see this.
I'd even like to see him recreate that recipe.
This would actually be interesting to see
i would love to see that
Necrons are kinda dead
Looks amazing! I'd like to see Eldar in the style. As their armour is more curved with fewer edges, it'd be interesting to see how a predominantly edge-highlighted style would hold up.
Despite not having flat, planar surfaces in abundance, Eldar have plenty of edges and gaps for panel lining and edge highlights, though these are usually also curvilinear, and not straight-edge, nor completely organic shapes either. They're sort of in the visual middle-ground from Tau-Marines-Eldar-Tyranids.
How about tyranids. Round shapes calling for volumetric highlights and the all biological, but different textures should be a breath of fresh air amongst all the homogeneous inorganic materials and machine-cut edges of the 41. millenium :D
best of both worlds: GSC or Orkz
I recently started using my magnifying table lamp to paint an entire drukhari army. It ended up looking so much better by the end. Whether old or not, if you can't tell you're painting over something or missing a spot, it'll add up. But definitely take breaks often. Focusing like that for too long can really drain you fast.
Why do I hold my breath everytime Jon puts his brush onto the model....... more intense than a Micheal Bay Movie
Can confirm, I've been resisting using sexy goggs but have been doing so because I am old. It's not that things are blurry, it's just that I can't resolve details anymore, including that moment when you brush is about to make contact.
Your death guard "painting like the box art" video is one of the top three painting videos on youtube. I hope you know that.
I pretty much copied your technique for my death guard with some different colors for metals. They looks astounding. Thank you.
That’s awesome man!
I enjoyed the video. The effect may be in the style of box art, but it's better. Less "plastic toy like". Thanks for the tips, and the motivation.
I'm an old man who painted my first ever mini yesterday I can say, quite safely, sexy gogs are a necessity
Eine echte Inspiration. Das Level, welches hier gezeigt wird ist ein lifetime goal. Viel Liebe und Grüsse from germany
Deutsch hat jetzt so viel Englisch mit rein gemischt... so weird to me growing up Zweisprachig that it seems like half the time people are just speaking the way I did daheim with meine Mutti.
Omg those late 90's dance tracks and the mid 80's Magnum/a-Team/macgyver vibe during the montage... So much over the top, brillant!
I don’t know how your intros are consistently so awesome… but damn they are good
That final thinned down wash step was *chef's kiss*!
I loved this. You made a high end paint job feel accessible, great job
The pacing, dialogue, script, humor, examples, and of course the painting are always executed to the highest level in your videos. You are by far my favorite painter to learn techniques from. You educate and entertain so fluidly. Thanks for sharing!
man you make the most honest and well thought out, fun tutorials.
Was really impressed with the use of the thinned Earth Shade to push 'into' the shadows, it really helped push the dynamics.
I feel like 'Eavy Metal absolutely does follow their "all over wash" technique. They just ONLY use glazes beyond that step and build like 120 layers of milk thin paint up to the box art saturation.
Generally instead of Agrax or Nuln they'll use a black glaze too for their washes.
Not entirely true, for example, when they paint necrons, They HEAVILY use Nuln oil
That glazing technique with the Reikland Flesh Shade is just so brilliant! will definitely try this one. thank you for sharing this one.
The subtle merchandise place at center stage the whole video. Master class in marketing.
First of all, really amazing paint job. Second: once more you taught me new idea's and techniques to add to my arsenal. Third and last: I really want to see a Skink Starpriest (or an other lizard) painted up in this style.
If you go back the another mini for the ‘evay metal styel, I’d like to see an AoS model with fewer clean edges. 40K seems to be made for this style but I for one only paint AoS and would like to see how this translates over, or rather, how YOU would translate it over.
What I like most about watching the videos you produce is that even though you already have a well developed style of painting, you consistently remind many of us about the basics. As a new painter I find this incredibly encouraging. Also, you continually remind us that we will develop our own style of painting. My style is different from yours, not better or worse, just different. Thanks for looking out and being coo.
Awesome video - thanks, Jon!
As an illustrator, I find that watching your videos and tutorials gives me more and better ideas and ways that I can improve and expand my acrylic painting process.
I especially appreciate the advice on brushwork and paint consistency.
You're helping me 'slay the white' (of the canvas)!
:)
Great vid - love how u integrated your edge highlighting tips in the middle, really appreciate those touches
Amazing work, really nice to see a break down of this style and some awesome tips for edge highlighting. Looking forward to more!
Thank you for this video!
I’m a newbie who started last month and this was SUPER helpful. My brush now has 95% less paint on it now and I have so much more control 💅
this is a lovely video, its very clear and approachable. Its great for beginners and people who have been painting for a while. Makes me want to go paints some more minis :)
Paint up a space wolf lord in a dark grey but also wavy metal style !
Awesome runthrough Jon - everything clearly explained and I love your narrating style!
Thank you, I love the EM style, and all the videos that explain it are pure gold!
While I do enjoy these 'Eavy Metal paint videos I feel as if everyone has done them. That's not so say I wouldn't enjoy another video, but I feel as if some of your other videos are more unique and interesting to watch. I would love to see you paint another dry brush model using the techniques and tips you got from Byron from Artist Opus. Also, your 3 paint roulette video was probably my favorite one yet. Your creativity and talent really comes through on those types of paints versus "following" the box art.
Regardless, I'll watch any video you put out as you have become my favorite CZcams minipainter.
I used to make jewelry, so those glasses were a natural for me to use them painting. Now that I'm 50, I legit need them. Especially so when I do 2mm historicals.
My favorite style I've seen Tau painted in is Comic Book style, the art style of Borderlands. It just fits so well and it's funny to watch people paint Tau in the Claptrap or the Atlas/Hyperion Corporation color scheme
Perfect way to start the day! Ninjon video! Its crazy that there are always 3 or 4 'aha' moments in them that I can't wait to apply to my next model.
The final produce looks gorgeous!! I learnt a few things too, and this new Darkstrider is gorgeous.
Magnifiers are indeed the number one hobby tool every painter should have.
Great Video. I actually got a lot out of it. Also, love the banter on Miniac even when that effort is sponsoring the video. :)
For wicking paint off. I have paper pallet with some texture paste in the top corner. This is great for wicking paint off as it doesnt soak out moisture like a paper towel.
I love the choice of music for these models. Fantastic video, as usual.
Thanks for getting really clear video of you painting, makes watching so much easier :)
Thanks for noticing! Tried a new camera set up for this one and I really like it!
Love your work man :)
After seeing some of the box art models in the flesh I would say the key Is to have a very skilled photography and editing department that do some great work with lighting, photoshop touch ups and additional blending. .
I learned that a lot of people feel bad that they can't paint to a standard to match a product in a picture where as their painting is actually as good if not better but they just don't have the camera equipment and photography or photoshop skills.
Wonderful video! Really loved the advices about brush control, thank you again :) And also the montage !
I found this channel from the Play on Tabletop channel, I really like your videos and have happily subscribed! I am looking forward to go through the catalogue of videos while I continue to build and paint my Sisters of Battle army
Also, by law all montages should have 80s style music!
Ninjon you're my fave! I dont care what you make just make all of the content! Can't wait to see more! I would love to grab some merch soon too!
Bro, the intros are amazing. I’ve been watching your videos for a few weeks now. When I was a kid (more than 20 years ago) my uncle would take me to the local comic book store. We would look at all the new pewter miniatures, and pick a few out. I would spend most of the time watching him paint. Your videos bring me back to a simpler more care free time in life. Thanks for the content and as a thank you, I have subscribed to the channel. Keep up the amazing work.
Hey Jon- Here's a video I'd love to see you do: Choose any mini you want to paint. As you paint, keep a swatch on your palette of each shade you mix and use. When you're done I'd love to see your palette with all of those swatches. It would help me get a better grasp of how much each new highlight color differs from the previous color/layer. Thanks for the great content. I am learning a ton.
So. I just found your channel. I stumbled onto it during a painting session when it was automatically started by youtube. I have to say, this is some quality content you are putting out. Great Job and keep it up.
Would love to see a Night Lord Chaos Space Marine painted in this style. I'm about to paint a whole army of them and some more advanced techniques that would be covered would be both helpful and interesting.
I really liked how the lenses on the drones came out, they really look like they have transparent glass lenses.
Another great vid, I love watching you grow! I’ve also heard that the minis used for the box art are also bigger than the ones irl so they can get detail with ease
I'd love to see one of my favorite models, the Lieutenant in Reiver Armor, painted in a NOT ULTRAMARINES style. Would love to see you take on black power armor, such as Raven Guard, Black Templars, etc
Noo
I thought I had a photo of one of those on my Instagram, but I was confusing the Lieutenant with the Infiltrator Sergeant. Oops!
The amount of detail in the face and the weathering effect and chipping of the box art .... the box art is on a different lvl. But Your Technic looks like more fun.... And fun is whats more important.
Ninjon thank you for the video, I would like to see you tackle the lackluster plastic of wizkids dnd models and see what you can manage to salvage from one of them, but this was great. Thanks for showing how you tried to replicate that high detail evy metal.
Always appreciate the subtle digital push in.
Those pants started off fire and the armor ended up looking amazing!!
With Miniac sponsoring this why was i waiting for "and don't forget to PAINT MORE MINIS" lol... thanks for brining all the knowledge in this one Ninjon!
You have helped me grow so much thanks for being you Jon!!
I keep thinking about trying the eavy metal style for an army but then I get started on the metallic bits, get carried away and have to grime the rest of model up to match the rust...
Loved the brown wash glaze technique, really made the armour panels sing.
Great video man, keep it up.
Excellent paint job Jon and an all-round top notch video. Nice to see a link to Element games as well, those guys are awesome.
That's one sexy paint job. I really enjoyed the concept of this video and it makes me want to try seeing if I can paint like the box art myself (I know I can't but it'll be fun to try). I appreciated the edge highlight tips as it's something I feel like I have to work on
I would love to see a more organic model being painted in this style. Maybe a Warhammer Fantasy/AoS model? Maybe give the Skaven some love? I'd really enjoy that :D
Awesome video. Well done paint scheme. Lots of great info! Magnification is amazing especially when you want to make a model look great. I find for batch painting they can get me bogged down in the weeds more than I oughta be for line troops but any time I'm trying to make something look crispy tendie fresh... on they go.
Wasnt keen on this model even as a tau player, but youve actually made me want to pick one up! great job :)
Great tutorial love the music and detail for end result
I know it's difficult to judge because you're filming at the same time, but I think it would be interesting to know how long this process took you. Often we see amazing models on line with absolutely no context, and it can give false expectations.
This is such an under rated comment.
When trying a new technique it is great to understand if something took a while. Eg NMM sometimes looks like it takes a few strokes. But have a tangible number can help focus people. Not so much as a goal but as hard indication of someone's scale of time.
You've grown to be my favorite mini painter on youtube, alongside Miniac. Thank you for the well-edited and explained process!
Well done for doing this! I have recently been trying to paint box art accurate skaven stormfiends and honestly nearly lost my sanity trying to replicate the blue. I now have over 12 different citadel blue paints (at least) and I still wont believe they've been using kantor blue. I have noticed however they do 100% do some post editing and up the contrast for the website pictures at least!
My dad is a armies on parade competition winner and he always talks about how important terrain is. He says it's at least a quarter of the model, and to not do it, or to not draw attention to it is to destroy your own model.
Wooouuuuhhh!! What a paint job !! Congratz !!!!!!!!!
This was great! I'd love to see more!
Wow that is top notch painting! Really good results!
That was really interesting and WAAAYYYY more informative than I thought it would be! More of the Eavy Metal would be great!
A big upvote worthy fishman and his pet drones! Hope to see more like these and much more! Keep up the excellent work.
Nice video Jon! I would love to see more of this and especially, you guessed it, painting space marines!
A lot of great tips in this, I feel like I still struggle with edge highlights but these tips will help I think.
I tried for years to mimic the eavy metal style and I am confident to say that I get it right consistently...but boy would your video have saved me countless hours of frustration amd errors
God I love this. Yes please more of these!
I love this model and I would love to see more like this. In my opinion I would love to see some Eldar in this style, or one of my favorite models that I think is underrated is the Dark Apostle from the Chaos Space Marines range. I can't wait to see more.
This is awesome. Love the production value to.
You can also get READERS, I use a +1 set and it helps with painting a lot! WHAT NO SIDE BY SIDE!? Looks good.
i'm stunned by your results, every time! i wish, I could paint like that....but i shiver like hell and my eyes are shit....so, my results are ....different! i also NEVER look on box art for reference...to not be disapointed in the end! keep up your good work and the cool videos!
I’m glad to see that other people actually use washes as glazes, I’ve been doing this ever since, awhile. Using browns and sepias are good for making things warm, but I actually use Athonian Camoshade for lots of other stuff. And since they are super thin they are pretty forgiving.
Awesome work as always! I'd love to see you tackle a larger model like a tank in this style.
Great looking model. I say try dark angels... When you talk about that one high light which GW put on to make it pop. That neon green layer they door can be hit or miss I been paint Dark Angt since 2016 and still have not mastered that edge highlight
Thickness of the Moot Green lines is key. Since the color really pops the edge highlight should be reaaaaally thin.
Another great video Jon!! I say do Another video in this style, maybe do a model for your night lords army 😆
Looks great!
Love seeing the Monument brushes! Monument Hobbies are best hobbies.
Looks absolutely superb 👍
Jon you’ve turned me into the laughing stock with my girl, I can’t take the ‘sexy gogs’ off! These things are incredible! Painting eyeballs went from hopes and prayers to.. wow, that’s not half bad! Thanks as always 🤗
I love these videos and I would love to see you tackle Ragnar blackmane next. I painted him myself recently and it was quite the challenge for myself and it would be awesome to see how you go about it. Thanks so much!
I admire your brush control.
you nailed this look!
Brings out the Skrag Brown for some rust effects, not realising it would have been a better base tone than XV-88. The joys of being a hobby CZcamsr! If you're going to do another video in this style, surely it's got to be one of the new Eldar models, their super clean style is a natural fit, plus they're the new hotness!
Amazing painting job and nice explain I learned a lot.
