Republic Services Recycle Truck Fire: Containment, Collection, Cleanup

  • After 10 years of filming garbage trucks, I've never been in a crazier situation. It was my birthday, and I went up to the Brea Thursday route at 5 PM knowing garbage trucks would still be on route. I found Mentado on his 1st street after a break, but not long after, smoke started coming out of the hopper, seen in the 2nd clip after the introduction. He turned off the truck, motioned me over, and asked me to call the fire department while he monitored the truck and called his supervisors. The response was so fast, police showed up while I was still on the phone! Eventually, a fire crew showed up, and since police blocked the street off, I filmed a few clips from a distance while they first tried spraying water into the hopper, and then eventually dumping the load in the street since the smoke was getting worse. Soon after, Luis (2402) showed up revving hard to finish Mentado's route. I then left, and I came back after eating dinner past 8 PM to find a bunch of Republic Services workers sweeping the fire load into the carry can of 2083, a bulk truck. I only got 1 clip because it was getting late, and I couldn't get too close like earlier with police blocking the street. A huge thank you to Mentado, who quickly noticed the smoke and alerted me to call the fire department; all the officers and firefighters for their rapid response in controlling the situation; and all the maintenance workers and management who stayed out late to collect the fire load. This is a reminder for everyone to please be aware of what you put in your garbage cans. Flammable material, especially, shouldn't be placed in a recycle cart. It's unfortunate that an almost full recycle load was ruined because of this.

    Talk about quick reflexes! He got lucky spotting the fire early, as this would have gotten ugly fast. Flammable homes and the risk of igniting a wildfire nearby, NEVER a good mix. Glad that it was still a small fire where it caused no damage to the body and mechanisms, and was able to be put out quick without it spreading. The Anaheim team never fails to impress.

      Yeah this was an uncertain situation, thankful the fire department and police responded fast. Republic Services was on top of the cleanup efforts, too, I can't believe how late they stayed out to finish it.

    I would’ve had no idea what to do in this situation because I use an IPad which doesn’t have cellular data so I wouldn’t have been able to call the fire department nor the police. Thank goodness you film with a phone

      @GarbageTruckVideography  Před 2 lety

      Yes 2972 came from Long Beach as well. They sent some of their 2013 units away. I guess 2973 ended up in NorCal. We also have 2970 and 2978.

    wow !! was the truck and people all ok ? my yard had a truck fire the whole truck was burnt besides the tailgate so it was saved

    • @GarbageTruckVideography
      @GarbageTruckVideography  Před 2 lety

      Everyone was okay, and the truck itself didn’t get damaged since it was the trash that caught fire and it got contained pretty quickly once they dumped the recycle in the street.

      No this is part of Mentado's Thursday route. After he does your area, he has more route on the other side of Brea Blvd. He's got a very big Thursday route. It's unfortunate the fire happened towards the end of the route.

    I just realized Luis was mixing all this 😔. Did they ever find out what caused the fire?

    • @GarbageTruckVideography
      @GarbageTruckVideography  Před 2 lety +1

      Yeah 2402 had broke down earlier and there wasn't much regular trash in the truck so they just sent Luis over to finish Mentado's route lol. I personally still don't know what caused the fire.

    • @GarbageTruckVideography
      @GarbageTruckVideography  Před 2 lety

      Lupe does trash in this section. Luis had just finished his trash route and came over here to finish off Mentado’s route.

    How did that happen

    • @GarbageTruckVideography
      @GarbageTruckVideography  Před 29 dny

      Not sure, all I know is smoke started coming out of the truck. Could have been from flammable material like a battery or coals from a fire.
