Did you work on that with Black Tail Studio? He's been talking about one that he did with other creators and he sent out the email a few days ago.
@@John.Doe-OGyes he's one of the other creators.
@@Fixbuildflip-Dustin-Boettcher Awesome see you in there!
For the next challenge it would be fun to build a domino's table with cup holders but switching work shop.
I’m going to offer John a bigger sawstop to move next door to me.
You’re gonna love his environmental dust collection system.
This legitimately gave me a good chuckle. Then I saw it was Cam, which made me chuckle a little harder at the idea that it might be less of a joke than initially thought.
hay cam, send me that circular saw with the chainsaw lol remember im bald like you mate xx
LOL!!! I watch both channels so that cracked me up pretty hard.
I want to see Cam vs both Johns in an epoxy table build! But Cam has to use neighbor John's shop and the Johns have to wear flip flops
As a millennial, I thought I would prefer John's build. However, I found John's build more aesthetically pleasing.
I completely agree
I thought the exact opposite
I think you may have been influenced by John’s demeanor and John’s sense of humor.
Exactly, John wins by a mile.
Now there is a point to debate here. If John had just changed the finish, it would have out shone John’s cabinet massively.
Great vid.
Everyone needs an Elder John in their life. He is freaking awesome.
But also watching elder John play with, oops I mean use, younger John's tools that he hasn't used for 60 years and owns it; priceless!
Age is not a barrier to mastering (/ releraning) new skills.
I really didn’t expect one of my favorite gaming CZcamsrs to share my love of woodworking CZcams as well lol
Both. Both are awesome. John has experience, and Jon is an awesome woodworker as well. I appreciate that both guys are good at what they do, but are open-minded enough to learn new tricks from each other or equipment they've never used before. I would watch these two guys building stuff together and sharing tips and perspectives a lot.
Amazing video, I really enjoyed seeing the Elder John. Thanks
My elder John neighbor is named Gaylon. And we have a bond that it seems John and John have. He is like a second father and bonus grandfather to my kids. I love seeing you do videos with him, and hope to see more. He is a natural in front of the camera too!
Elder John's cabinet has a warmer vibe reminiscent of a whiskey barrel. And his hidden feature is really funny, and he did it himself.
Maybe that’s why I prefer it too. I didn’t even consider that it reminisced a whiskey barrel. 👍🏻
Protect your neighbor at all costs. Cool neighbors like John are truly a rare thing.
I just lost mine, she was 101. A properly lovely woman who had so many stories to tell. So glad I knew her.
I think your next challenge should be for you and John to challenge another two-person team online. You two obviously have amazing chemistry so to partner up would make a fun watch. Go Team “John Squared”!
Brilliant Idea👍🏼
Just adding a comment here to support the idea..
Here here.
Yes!
Absolutely! Great idea
Old John has such a natural gift of talking on camera. Protect him at all cost.
He reminds me of Letterman.
The only secret to speaking well on camera is acting like yourself. Most 70+ year olds have their natural personality locked in pretty good.
Agreed. Id be interested to know if he was a teacher or something or just comes naturally
Old John’s cabinet is aesthetic as hell. The patina and look of aged weathered wood is just something magical to me. Also for something like a “wine cabinet” something that gives the appearance of age seems to compliment the product going in it. Old looking cabinet=finely aged wine
Neighbour John is a national treasure
Man, you've hit on a perfect format. I could watch you and John work together on anything. What a blessing that you have an elder friend who is such a kind soul.
This time, a definite tie. Both were unique and beautiful in their own ways. Your spirit of generosity, however, nearly brought tears to my eyes. What incredible people you both are and what a terrific video this was. Thank you for taking the time, while looking after your sick daughter, to put this gem together.
I agree. The boomer project has a great finish and looked like great. However something about the mesh on the doors for the white claws really stood out. Actually it accentuated the drawing inside.
Here’s an idea for a competition: each of you must make a project with only 5 (or any predetermined limited number) of the tools from your shops. Can’t touch any of the others. That would bring the imagination to life! 😁
Love it! Better yet, the first tool is one they get to "steal" from the other person's shop!
“Here’s a table I made only using a drill, a sawzall, and a flashlight”
Big John is going to have a whole new set of tools by the time he is done. It is awesome to have a neighbor that you are great friends with.
This makes me sad as I’ve been fortunate enough to have an older neighbor like John, who shares my passion for making for the last 13 years. Unfortunately we have to move, but to lose a neighbor, and friend like him is tough. People from John’s generation are built different and make amazing neighbors, and friends. Enjoy your John while you have him 👍
John is a true treasure.
I love how you treat John to an upgrade in these videos. Its a great way to make an old guy feel very appreciated
The best thing about this video is how wholesome it is when you and John work together in your shop.
This neighbor is a treasure. He is such a CZcams natural. I would watch anything this guy makes.
John's liquor storage cabinet was a clear winner! Absolutely love these videos. One can never have enough friends in life.
During the video I was more inclined to your cabinet, younger John. But the reveal of finished products immediately changed my mind. True, yours look more polished and is, by all means, piece of furniture.
But older John's one seems to have soul. I genuinely like that.
Who won? I think that we all did.
It’s truly a joy to watch you and John work alongside each other. Can’t wait for the next one.
I love this!!!! I agree with the comments, protect John at all costs! ❤ I enjoy seeing the older guys and the next generation working together to create and compete! Way to go gentlemen…well done
Elder John’s speech patterns bring back so many memories of my dad making me watch “This Old House” for some reason. He’s so soft spoken and it just warms my soul
This series of neighborly builds is the most civil video series I have seen on CZcams. It is what we ought to be to one another. Thank you. I can't wait to watch with my younger boys so that that can see what healthy, warm, and fun friendships between generations ought to be.
I brought the whole family in to watch this one after catching the last one. The format is perfection and there is awesome chemistry along with a genuine level of respect and kindness.
Keep these up for all of our benefit ❤️
Tough choice. Both cabinets excel in their own ways. John’s Boomer cabinet touts the classic rustic look screaming all sorts of characters with its many shades of brown yet very functional! Jon’s Millennial Jukebox is more elegant, chic with perfect proportions. I like both but if I’d have to pick a winner - it’s still the boomer cabinet only because I just like the rustic shaker style just a tad more! Overall- great video! Love the camaraderie between you!
While John’s cabinet is really cool with the great hidden feature, my vote is for John’s cabinet simply because I find it more aesthetically pleasing. Congratulations John on a job well done.
Governor Smith?
I am 70 and this is one of the most delightful and encouraging videos I have ever seen.. Thank you John and thank you John. What a pleasure. You are fortunate to have each other and I am fortunate to have you.
Johns liquor cabinet looks like the type of furniture I imagined having when I was a kid. On the other hand, Johns looks like the one I actually want as an adult.
Elder John speaks from a lifetime of experience and you can definitely hear it in his voice. Keep that man safe because he's gonna be a national treasure.
One of the most wholesome videos on CZcams! Loved this video ❤️
Being an aspiring woodworker, using limiting tools and an unconditioned barn space, I loved watching the two of you make the most with what you have. Very relatable, and a refreshing departure from all the “high end” content that’s out there. Enjoyed the rawness of it all.
It is amazing what a person can build out of wood if they learn the basics. I took a 3-day hand tools carpentry class at a school that focuses on old methods and skills. Several years later, I needed to build a barn for my goats: 12ft x 24ft. I did all the work by myself - a 65 year old female who had used my carpentry skills some but never to design and build such a large project. There was only one problem I had and ended up getting professionals to fix it was the tin roof. The roof sloped 3 inches across the narrow side of the building for rain run off. I tried to do it myself but had to call in professionals because my roof leaked and all the solutions I got from other builders didn't work. In less than 4 hours, the 2 men took the old tin roof off, put down 2 × 6s on top of my ceiling rafters and used longer sheets of tin. No more leaks. I used battery powered drill, hammer drill (fantastic toy - I didn't even know they existed), and circular saw. All of them cut through the 2×6s and the Smartboard I used as siding. I now just have to build the 2 dutch doors and and other 4 stalls on the other side. I had to wait for the building to dry out well after the leaks and to give my shoulders a rest from using the power tools. The goats love it and I have used it several times for first time goat moms to give birth in. The are protected from weather and predators. Thank you for encouraging everyone to stretch their imagination and built neat stuff!
Your neighbor is awesome!!!! More please!!!
CHALLENGE:
Young John uses pallets/neighbor John uses high quality wood.
Is there a way to build him a shop table that rolls out of the shed? And collapses when not in use?
Still sharp, after all these years 🙌
We need more John vs John content. The way both of you do things differently but how you are so respectful of each other's methods in the positivity we need today. I'd love to see you build a bunk bed with a functional and creative twist.
These build series are awesome. As a Gen-X just starting to get into woodworking (decided to finally build a bass from scratch that I’ve wanted to do for 35 years) I find myself planted directly between you too - somewhere between wanting to get every cut perfect and use every new tool I can get my hands on - and just getting it done with whatever I have around.
I hope you two continue to build together. It’s inspiring and nice to see the contrast between your styles.
Huge W for the viewers. Both liquor cabinets were great. I am a huge advocate for the rustic style, and that would be my preference for my home.
But the winner for this one for me has to be the music cabinet.
Love how older jon was able to interact with the modern tools and enjoy some of the precision it could bring to his project.
Haven't enjoyed a youtube creation as much as this one! Laughed out loud at your humility and shed a tear because of your kindness..Your neighbor couldn't be more fortunate having you and your family nextdoor...John, your craftsmanship is exceeded only by the humanity you exhibit..thnaks for sharing..unwilling to pick a winner..it's a tie I wish I could've been part of!
Love this content. I used to have a neighbor named Bill who was a guy in his late 70s who restored airplanes at a local museum in his retirement. And he would bring me welding projects to work on for the planes. It was great having him as a neighbor. He also had every type of drillbit and random miscellaneous screw you could ever imagine so whenever I needed something I would just go next-door go to his garage and start rifling through his bins. It was great.
Wonderful. Very generous of you to give a SawStop. Really enjoyed the old dude (which I am )
Kudos to you both.
The new saw was a nice touch, thank you for that. Elder John seems like a real sweetheart. Glad you have such a great neighbour.
Older John gets my vote, he is something very special. I could listen to the man talk all day. The rainbow back panel deserves a special award, though, creativity is obvioisly in the genes. ❤
Seems impossible to choose because John’s is so freaking cool and yours is so sleek and modern
Both are amazing! John is a true craftsman
Thanks for making John speechless with the SawStop … he’s loving all of this just as much as you are… let your generosity be a call-to-action for us all. 🎉
Every time I see the thumbnail with your neighbor I get so excited to watch. Thank you another great video
Jon these videos are so entertaining! Thanks for doing another one. My vote is for your mid-century cab. The music pushed you into the winner's circle. (Really it was giving the Elder John that Sawstop!) Thanks man. You're the best.
Thanks for watching! You're the best
This is such great content! I hope you keep involving neighbour John in the future. It doesn't have to be a "competition".
Both designs look great but neighbour John won on points! His build design style just fit my preferences better. I like the sort of rustic look he created.
Cheers and keep them coming!
Greetings from South Africa 🇿🇦. Wow, John & John, you guys have an amazing friendship ✌️. This just makes life and projects so much easier 😂. Love both the cabinets....... cannot pick a winner, we'll both are winners. Take care
Everyone needs a neighbor like John! You both are winners with friends like that for neighbors. Both builds are great good job you two.
Well, glad to see this becoming a theme in your videos John, the two of you are really fun to watch, especially the off the cuff comments such as “only the cockroaches will know!” 😂
Love these vids with John. Keep them coming
I dearly love that you gift your neighbor another upgrade each time. He's awesome, and you're awesome for doing for him as he does for you in these videos. Very happy to put a like and a comment on this one
An older friend of mine from church was a huge influence on me getting into wood working. Seeing you too together is amazing. You are both are sincerely good people.
These are next level videos with a genuine guest / sidekick and educational too. I really like the black finish on the red oak as I got several panels free and need a project to build. How did you remove most of the white cerusing to get the nice look?
I like older johns rustic cabinet better overall. But I do like how the finish on young johns cabinet and the mesh backing came out.
I don't know why, but this ended up being one of my favorite woodworking videos of late. I really like how both pieces ended up. They both look fantastic! And the table saw gift at the end was so great.
That was a genuinely sweet video of friendship, comradery and craft. I hope this inspires more people to do the same.
Wow, they were both great projects. Both came out well. I think I would have to choose the taller, brown hootch cabinet -- only cause it would match my decor more.
I started in a 10x10 shed at age 14 making wooden toys and puzzle boxes. Kinda brings me back. I'm torn, but the taller cabinet is just a little better in every category and more likely to actually go in my house.
These videos between you two are in the very rare company of ones that actually make me want to get working and not just consume more content. I say that with a wince though because I’d like you to make more! They are so refreshing. Makes me think about what it would be like to have a dad that humbly shows me up with inferior tools. This is healthy competition, friendship, and just plain general humanity at its best. You two are lucky to be neighbors.
As a person. I think this is one of the best videos you have made. The memories that you 2 are going to have are just great, like the pieces you both made. This is why I love woodwork. Thank you for the great video. Cheers
I really like your communication with your neighbor you can learn from old people a lot and it seems he can learn a lot from you.
From all of the wood working channels I have been recommended this is the one I think has convinced me it is time to try and rebuild my desk. I was very tempted to go the Ikea route with a hardwood top but there are features I want and these videos tell me I have at least 90% of the tools I need already that built up over the years. They just never been used for furniture construction.
Your friendship and the skill you both possess make these videos both educational and entertaining. I'm always late to the show but I guess that's what videos are all about...recording events for future viewing. Also, I'm about 12 years behind Boomer John and I hope I'm still as alert, productive and active in 12 years as he is.
Your neighbor John does have a great eye for beautiful old hardwood with a lot of character. Funny as we age we tend to be able to find more beauty in these things. This video is just another reminder to try and connect with and enjoy your neighbors whatever the age differences.
Elder John??? Did the cockroach notice the difference in the furniture???? 😂 I just love your simplicity and laidback disposition…. Your little humorous comments had me in stitches!!! Keep up the good work!!! You remind me of my furniture building grandfather!!! Old time carpenters are fantastic and we stand to learn a great deal from them!!!! Young John, love your channel and subscribing!!!! Keep making more videos!!
Really love these videos with Elder John so much! So glad to see him back! This was definitely a closer competition, but I'm going with John again. Loved the warmth of the piece and its poetry. There is something soulful in his creations.
That was so much fun. I love how well neighbour John appreciated the nice equipment.
It really doesn’t matter what you and John build we just love seeing you guys together doing what you enjoy .
It's a toss up. I like both. Great job you two! As a 70 year old woman with a shop for furniture restoration, I approve of you both.
What an awesome video. This was a perfect blend of showcasing a couple of builds, entertainment and humor from both Jon and John, and proof that it is indeed the craftsman and not the equipment that makes a quality build.
More of these please Jon & John -- you're both great and I love the "slice of life" stuff. Jon's respect for John is inspiring and heartwarming -- I love the generosity too -- thank you. I'm looking forward to the next one of these, and the next -- you've got something really good going on here.
For all the woodworking videos I get to see on here John's story of just enjoying his craft is one of the most touching I hope we all get to live life and enjoy hobbies like he does. and thank u other John for sharing it with us in a beutiful package and with the cabinet that takes my vote.
I love the camaraderie between John Junior and John Senior. Both very talented individuals in their own right. John Snr’s cabinet reminds of furniture from the 70s. Very cool. John juniors was great too.
Both projects are beautiful and I would be proud to have either in my house. But the rustic look of John’s wine cabinet speaks to me a little more (which pains me, since I love the Easter egg of the painting at the back of the whiskey cabinet!). Thanks for an awesome video!! 👍👍👍
I totally resonate with both of you. My shop was considerably better than John's but not nearly as complete as John's. No jointer/planer and only environmental dust collection. DeWalt rather than Ryobi. I didn't go for junk wood, but worked with what was around (often junk wood). I did have a decent collection of ancient hand tools -- my great grandfather was a master carpenter and my mother collected w/w tools. If you know what you're doing, you don't need all the fancy shit for solid accurate results. Or more importantly, fun.
Btw, compressed air in the shop is well worth it.
This content is wonderful. Thank you. My Neighbor John was a guy named George Auth. We had different ways of doing things, but I still treasure the things he taught me as a new homeowner and woodworker. Looking forward to future videos!
Loved the sound activation ..John .🤔...
But the pictures of Toby the cat for the win..😂👏👏👏
Clearly, it was a tie. Now you'll have to do another project to see if you can determine the winner. Darn! Great builds and what a great friendship you have. Also, sweet rainbow painting!
Thank you very much!
Delightfully entertaining and educational. John and John are fortunate to have become neighbors. More fortunate to each appreciate the other.
Challenge?? Mailbox, bird house, knife rack, kid toy, shoe storage for the wife’s, idevice charger support or base, wood vase, wind chime
Love these videos with your neighbor. He is a star. It's very hard to find a talented, hilarious, down to earth person who comes across so naturally on camera. I hope to see more content from the 2 of you.
Must admit ol-John's liqueur cabinet has style - it speaks to me as the clear winner
I love your guys friendship. It’s really endearing and genuine.
I like the one idea of choosing only 5 tools to use. But make it where the other person gets to choose your tools, one at a time. With a pre determined list to choose from
Oh you are so lucky to have a neighbor like that. A world of knowledge and happy to share it with you. It’s too cool to see him experience new tools and see how modern shops work. I’m glad you got him a table saw but with you would have spent the same on a much better one (saw stop over priced). But either way, he’s going to love his new saw. Wish we could do more for this guy.
After the question, "How are you liking the shop so far," around 3:40, part of me expected John to say, "It doesn't totally suck." LOL. I think I may have watched the last video too many times. But his comment, "It's more precise than I deserve," was also very good. I like your comment around 19:00, "We have to work with what we've got. So rather than try to hide this, I think we should accentuate it..." Great video again! Thank you both! Both great pieces of work, by the way! I thought the catnip compartment was going to give it the edge, but then the speaker/circles at around 25:50 were as creatively cool as that was funny. I think it's a tie. Cheers! :)
Thanks for watching and appreciate the support
I really enjoy your channel - projects, content, and style. You consistently do an excellent job.
Your collaboration with Elder John (I'm closer to his age) is one of the most rewarding pieces of woodworking content I've ever seen. The cross-generational friendship you share is inspiring and gives me a vision of what I would like to be to my younger neighbors.
Everyone needs a John Sr. in their life, mine isn't a neighbour but a father in law. He took me from not able to saw in a straight line to building pretty much anything and having a passion for it. Every year he stays with us for a week and we do a big project together... over the years we've laid a patio, built an outdoor bar and kitchen complete with a seating area, built a massive composite deck onto the back of the house, put in countless metres of bespoke fencing, and even built a pondless waterfall and stream. I have him to thank for what will likely be a rest of life hobby, and developing an 'I can do that' attitude.
If this channel is going to become John and Jon Builds, it will 100% become my favorite woodworking channel.
John is such a top guy, wish my neighbor was like him.
I loved your music-themed cabinet. Maybe skip the white stuff on the legs (don't remember what it's called) and leave them jet black and it would be perfect.
liked your channel since it began, and was lucky enough to stumble upon it when it was new. this was GOLD, thank you guys for sharing with us!
It is so amazing to see an older man enjoy making something to such extend. Real inspiration for the youngsters out here. You don't need much, just find good material, and 50% of the job is done
That was uber fun! What a great build for the both of you and having each other as neighbors!
'play whack a worm when they pop out of there' 😂 what a great way of adding a fun/easy game to the liquor cabinet and gitting things is the perfect game when drinking, lol.
I really actually kinda want to get a whack-a-mole game now for my bar 😅
Love these videos with your neighbour. Well done upgrading his equipment👍
That worm-eaten barnwood piece looks neat, but stabilizing/filling it so it stays in that condition would be a good idea.
It's a great example of how the importance of tools is in how they make the same skills easier to work with, not that they replace the skills. Both are great designs for different tastes.
They are both amazing. Great build-off with a great neighbor. Passions bridge the gap between generations. Love it.
Literally the best series on woodworking CZcams.
