Got my first job in this trade 2 weeks ago while taking a class in community class for HVAC and i’ve learned so much more on the job than in school and I already apply all these tips to everyday work and i’ve learned a lot and have great leads who put effort into teaching me and explaining me everything. Good video!
I went to school and feel like I didn’t learn much, so I want to apply but I know ima be judged which is kinda gay of me to think like that. Should I still try and reach out for a apprenticeship
@@berrymycawkner Yes keep trying! I have learned 100x more on the job than in school! You just need to find the right company willing to train you! I didn’t learn anything that I didn’t learn on the job at school. Only got my EPA from schooling
Hey man, great video. Hvac is a great trade to be in. The endless opportunity’s are out there. I enjoy learning and doing the work myself whether it’s service or installs. However, the last company I worked with, my experience wasn’t that great with some workers and the management. It was way too corporate. I’m grateful for the Experience. The issue I had was I was being tossed around like bxtch working with a different crew each day. I never really had a lead to learn off. At times I would forget how each lead wanted things done their way if you know what I mean. Anyways, I have an interview Monday for a hvac install helper position and they told me they move people up , just gotta prove it type of thing.
I’m happy to hear you have that opportunity coming up, sometimes it will take a few companies before you find one willing to teach you and let you learn from mistakes, because that’s how you will progress quickly! Good luck bro 🤙🏽
@@ShortyHVAC update , first day was tough after being off work for a few months but my body will get used to it. Measured, threaded and installed 2 1/2” gas piping for a renovation condo. Was not easy but got it done. What’s nice is that everyday there will always be different type of work
100%! It’s always different. Even when you’re doing the same type of job, it’s always in a different application. Somedays we have to bust our ass to get the work done. Threading and piping in 2 & 1/2 inch is no joke! I’m glad you’re off to a good start and back to work! Keep it up brother 🤙🏽 you’ll start to get more and more comfortable as you progress and learn more. Learn something new everyday!
Should absolutely ask questions DURING the work. When you wait to ask questions, you forget shit and the information doesn't stick in your head as well as it would if you had learned it while doing a task. Almost all HVAC work is slow and methodical. If anything, questioning the process should HELP your instructor. Rubber duck method. Of course, this all goes out the window if you're glued to a dickhead who doesn't care for apprentices. I've been lucky thus far. But being an apprentice is supposed to be intimate. The things you learn are so fucking important, not just for your career, but for your safety as well as the safety of the client. Pour one out for everyone with a shitty master/journeyman.
You know what I actually completely agree. Better to ask questions AS you’re doing it. I think you can guess the type of guy I was working under my first year 😂
As a 30 year tech ready to retire, I approve of this message and tips. We did not have phones when I started. Hell we did not even have battery powered tools.
Buy a new tool every paycheck. Buy what you can afford. Does not have to be high dollar, but not so cheap it falls apart. You can upgrade later when your a top tech.
As someone first starting out in any job at all in life whatever it is the most important rule should always be to pay attention so that later on in life you can be the one standing over people on the phone 😂
I just got my HVAC certificate from a community college, but still don’t feel confident in applying for an entry-level position, so can I still be an apprentice, even though I have my certificate?
Hey everybody before you think about getting into HVAC residential … Please understand that this trade is full of favoritism!.. I repeat this field is filled with favoritism, if the leads don’t like you they won’t train you .. And they run the mouth like high schoolers as well .. Good luck ..

@@ShortyHVACYou should make a video about what tools a apprentice should pick up!
That’s a good idea, I will! Look out for it here soon.

I ALLWAYS required my helpers to leave their cell phone in the truck.
More like keep your phone with you to take notes I did this coming up on ac. now I’m in 4 1/2 years in doing commercial
Is Florida a good place to start my career as a hvac technician?
Considering there is a nationwide shortage of HVAC Techs, anywhere is a good place
Yes
What’s name of your boots
They’re some carhartt slip ons, not my favorite pair.
game recognizes game 👌lol
That's a beautiful set up in the basement there. It's too bad they're not all like that. Vented attics are the absolute WORST place for HVAC
Agreed! Absolutely hate attic installs..
Explain your measurements before you bent the copper pipe. It was dead on!
I will make a video on it really soon!!
