    I remember my first year!! I was so excited and ready to go but it was whirlwind and taught me so many quick lessons! Always plan over the Summer or in pre-planning the whole year calendar! Once the students come I don't know about other school counselors I have to put on my skates and GOOOOOOO! This is awesome!

    Hello, great video, I will definitely be here alot for these great pointers... I have to go back for my Masters degree but I still have the job as the school counselor, was getting your masters hard, or just a bunch of paperwork like B.A?

    • @TheInspiringSchoolCounselor
      @TheInspiringSchoolCounselor  Před 4 lety +5

      Getting my masters was not hard for me. The program flew by it seemed. I just had to make sure I applied myself to the course work. I won't say it was a bunch of paperwork but it was a lot of projects and case studies that were beneficial to apply to your school counseling profession. It was also a lot of hands-on work which I loved!

    Hey love your video ! I am graduating undergrad very soon and debating between LMFT and SC . I do not have a teaching background do all levels have to make lesson plans or is that just the primary level?

    • @TheInspiringSchoolCounselor
      @TheInspiringSchoolCounselor  Před 3 lety +2

      Thank you for coming to my channel. The good thing about school counseling is you don't have to have a teaching background in which I was so relieved. There are different factors that will determine whether or not you will be teaching lessons as a counselor. it just depends on what school level your working in, the administrator you have, the school district your working in, and whether your working in a private or public school. However, it is most common to see elementary/primary school counselors teach lessons regularly than middle and high school counselors. Though as school counselors, teaching guidance lessons should be a part of our school counseling program, it should not consume our program. Most times, you wont find middle and high school counselors focus on lessons, instead, they are dealing with scheduling, college and career readiness, testing, etc.In my case now, I am not teaching lessons like I was when I first received my job. Now I am focused on Individual counseling and small groups. If I want to teach a lesson or a teacher requests for me to teach a lesson to their class, I actually fixed my schedule where I set up when and how frequent I teach lessons. I hope this helped.

      Thank you so much for reaching out. Has there been plenty of openings where you are? Are you only applying to specific school levels? I actually did a video talking about why one still have not landed the school counselor position. Im not sure if you seen that but things in that video you could take in account. I am so sorry to hear you have not got a SC job yet but dont give up, it still can happen for you

    Hello! I am considering going back to get my My Masters in School Counseling. Currently I am on my 6th year of teaching, but I am wondering if they would count those years of experience towards the counseling pay scale. My district has a separate pay scale for teachers and counselors.I would need to get a loan in order to get my masters, but don’t want to do that if I wouldn’t have income growth if that makes sense. Thank you!

    • @TheInspiringSchoolCounselor
      @TheInspiringSchoolCounselor  Před 3 lety +1

      That is a good question. However, my thought would be because you are switching your career from being a teacher to become a school counselor, whenever you get your first job you will be paid as a first year counselor despite you teaching for 6 yrs. however, that would be a good question to ask your school district.

    • @Blessed_Daye
      @Blessed_Daye Před 3 lety +1

      I had the same question. I've been teaching for 5 years and I already have a masters degree. I was considering an EdS program that would allow me to obtain licensure for school counseling, and if I wanted I could take a few more classes to be a LPC. On the other hand, I have registered to begin the process to become a national board certified teacher. But there are aspects of teaching that I do not like. I also don't want to have more student loans. Suggestions??
