    This was such a helpful video. I’m an elementary school counselor going into my 1st year on the job this school year. You provided a well rounded perspective on things that I want to keep in mind as I enter into that school environment. I’m 30 going on 31, but I’ll gladly embrace the youthfulness that these kids will provide this school year😂

    It is so nice to see school counseling through the lense of a different culture. Where I live, school counselors aren't on a "specialist" rotation where we have classes every week with the students. Rather, we schedule to go in the classrooms once or twice per month which gives us more time to run groups and deal with individual cases. But I totally agree with your pros and cons 😮‍💨😂

    I graduate in December and have had a lot of exposure to the elementary level (worked at an elementary school for five years before starting my program). One of the things I love, as you mentioned, is dressing up and having more permission to be goofy and silly. I''m looking for a middle school placement for my last semester of internship because I personally think I'll vibe more at that level, but I do hope I'll still have some of that permission there, too.

    I am a stay at home mom and I have four children in elementary school I would like to be a teacher or counselor or something that has to do with school and children.
    I know its not a lot of money,but I would love to be influence to help families and children thrive.
    I only have 1 semester in college as education and my personal experience as a mother, but I do know i need a lot of guidance and techniques to learn.
    I really enjoy having children around. :)

    Great informative video! I’m an elementary school speech therapist whose office is right next door to our school counselor so I see how tough (and also rewarding) the job can be!

    When I was 10 years old, I lied to my elementary school guidance counselor. I told her that Daddy was hurting me, which was a big fat lie. When I was 26 years old, I felt extremely guilty for lying to her, so I decided to write her a letter, telling her the truth. In the letter, I told her that Daddy had never hurt me and that all he ever did was love me. When she got the letter, she called the police department. The police department then called my house when I was helping Mommy with the laundry. Just then, I had to clean the house because there was gonna be a policeman coming to the house. My little brothers also pitched in. When the policeman came, we sat down in the dining room and told me that my elementary school guidance counselor had already known the truth a long time ago. He told me that I didn't need to write her any more letters in the mail. He then asked me how I got her address. I told him that I used US Phone Book.

      If you're wondering why I still call my parents Mommy and Daddy, it's because I'm autistic. My grandaunt Peggy always called her parents Mommy and Daddy. If Peggy were alive right now, she'd be 99 years old and will still be calling her parents Mommy and Daddy.

    What advice do you have for an elementary teacher looking to transition into a school counseling position? I’ve been in education for 10 years so I’m just curious. Thank you 🤗

      @TheInspiringSchoolCounselor  Před měsícem +1

      @leeza7810 I absolutely love it. Especially working with this school level. It’s really rewarding especially when you have admin that understand your role and utilize you as such.

      @@leeza7810 I am loving the job after the 1st year but didn’t start out loving it there’s pros and cons for sure but that may vary based on your responsibilities/location.
      There were some road bumps at the beginning of the school year but being vocal about issues helped me settle into my position in the first year and helped me feel more respected.
      Working with children is rewarding in itself because many of them look up to you as role model. That part of the job will always be rewarding in my opinion because there’s always going to be some challenges in working with children like any other age group. But a big part of being comfortable in the role (in my opinion) is feeling valued and respected in your position by staff such as admin, teachers, principal, etc. when that’s missing it can make the job feel very unappealing on top of the challenges you already deal with that people don’t see with their own eye.
      Sorry if that’s vague but hope it helps!

    As a girl growing up, I always thought I wanted a girl and a boy as children. I wound up not having any children and it was not by choice. In dealing with elementary school children, did you have more trouble with boys as opposed to girls? For me, I was very obedient. My mother never had to come to school for anything dealing with disciplinary issues. I would think boys might be more a discipline problem.

      That’s a good question and I never thought to track in a school year how many boys I had to work with vs. girls. However, Working in the elementary setting I have girls coming in and out of my office just as much as boys.
