      Thanks for the comment. I use to struggle with alternators until a friend explained how simple they are. Why the idiot light goes out was the big thing for me.

    Plenty of videos on CZcams explaining how to test alternators whilst on the vehicle. Thank you for your bench test explanation.

      Testing on a car is basically starting the car and if the light goes out it is working….. most of the time. I made this test rig because I was going through old Lucas alternators looking for one that worked This was way easier than installing each one on the car. Thanks for the comment though

    Awesome video mate. I just installed a Perkins diesel into my boat and thought I had a faulty alternator. Then after taking the alternator home and running your set up it proved it was charging! One thing... don't use a 12v fluoro light bulb.

      Glad it could help Jeremy. An incandescent bulb is necessary in this set up Cheers.

    I wish you had said what wire went to the #1 post on the alternator and what wire went to the #2 post......I'd eliminate the test light and just have a volt meter on the battery to see the true exact volt output reading of the alternator Still a good how to video.. Thanks

    The bulb goes out because it gets 12 volts and longer has a ground ? Why does it no longer have a ground? Can you explain that better please?

    • @rv4flyer
      @rv4flyer  Před 2 lety +4

      The bulb is connected to the positive side of the battery and to a terminal on the regulator of the alternator. When the alternator is not turning and the ground wire is connected. (the large clamp with the black plastic) the light now has a ground. Once the alternator starts turning and generating power some power is sent down the wire to the light from the alternator and now it has a positive from both sides, no ground, and the light will go out.

    Do you have to connect a ground to the alternator can’t it just get it’s ground off the engine block?

    • @rv4flyer
      @rv4flyer  Před 2 lety

      The alternator circuit requires a ground. In the video, it comes from the neg side of the battery. It is not grounded to the engine block

    What is the other end of your booster cable (Positive side) connected to?

    • @rv4flyer
      @rv4flyer  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi Max. It’s not connected to anything. I only had it connected to the battery post so the small clips from the other wire had something tho clip to. Not really needed there and it is a bit confusing

      @@rv4flyer Thanks for the answer. Just wanted to know if all this needs to be grounded but I guess not. Great video and explanation. Keep it up! #FanfromMontreal

    What’s the next step if the light stays on 😅

    • @rv4flyer
      @rv4flyer  Před 2 lety

      if the light stays on, either you built in regulator is bad or the alternator is. time for a new one or a rebuild

    So my ligg comes on at the AC ignition when engine is running the light turns off I removed the alternator and the belt same thing so no light should that not have a light when there's no alternator please let me know man

    • @rv4flyer
      @rv4flyer  Před rokem

      To recap your comment, your light comes on when the ignition is turned on, and goes out when the engine is started. This is exactly what should happen. You then say you removed the alternator and the belt, and when you turn the key on and start the engine, the light stays out. This also is exactly what should happen. The light on the dash now has no ground when the engine is off as the plug is removed from the alternator, removing its ground so it won't light up, same thing when the engine is running. no ground, no light

    Not informational doesn't show where in the back certain wires go. Also impact gun can strip the nut off

    • @rv4flyer
      @rv4flyer  Před rokem +1

      There is only one plug on the alternator and the video shows wires connected to all the wires coming out of it. The impact wrench was in fact turning so as to tighten the nut. As for stripping it off if it was going in the other direction, that is what they are meant to do. Just for interest, it doesn't matter which way alternators spin. They will generate in either direction

      @ClassicGBodyGarage Před 7 měsíci

      I hooked it up just like yours and light always stays on. Even with testing 10 alternators. Maybe there is an issue with them all. It's the reason I built this based off your video. Maybe I did something wrong.
