Jan is a great player and wonderful person. His writing and analysis of chess games are first rate. I met him in Dieren at a tournament and he is very interesting.

Bijzondere vind ik dat Timman naar mijn idee als één van de weinige met zoveel begrip over de persoonlijkheid Fischer spreekt.

This is the best Interview about Fischer. Too bad it's not in English.

There are subtitles, so what do you want more. Not all human beings speak english and that is good.

America asked bobby to help fight the Cold War. Imagine the pressure Then his country abandoned him.

No, he wasn’t abandoned. What would you have had the country do? We don’t have official support for chessplayers, as the Soviets did. We expected Fischer to defend against Karpov, but he chickened out. That’s when his support from ordinary Americans started to wane. We don’t like quitters. Our chess players always revered Fischer for his chess, but after he had been gone for awhile he was no longer important. When he showed up 20 years later to play Spassky again, claiming it was a championship match, he made himself an object of ridicule. Fischer was responsible for his own downfall.
