    Hello everybody,
    Philodendrum domesticum:
    18 months ago I bought a One-Halfmoon-Leave cutting of a variagated Domesticum (being a rookie at that time).
    It roted slowly and got thriving. But turned yellow more and more.
    I cut it back recently. Now let's wait and see.
    Monstera "Peru":
    I got 2 little plants. Initially nothing happened. Then one started thriving pretty fast. REverted.
    I cut it back.
    Now let's wait and see.

    I’m watching the vid but had to pause and drop a comment on the Monstera Peru var.. I agree with you 1000%. This is at the top of my most hated plants. It is such a little b*tch!!!! After about a year of struggling with it I literally ripped it out of the pot, smashed it to bits, and threw it in the trash. I could’ve sold it for a decent amount of money but it was sooooo worth it to take my anger out on it!

My plant is now much bigger, probably another 3-4 leaves later, and still green. Even a corm that i collected from it during a transplant turned out green

    My variegated Micans has grown really nice variegation on all the new leaves coming out. I keep it in high light, but it was not always in high heat, so perhaps it is more to do with light. I gave up on Monstera Peru variegated. I do not think I will get another one of those.

    • @Latayla
      @Latayla Před rokem

      I just asked that question here.
      My plant just felt the need to be fancy this summer and threw out a leaf with a good bit of sectoral variegation. As you say- it’s brownish/red but as I described it; reddish pink😅.
      That patch wasn’t there in the past two weeks since that leaf unfurled. I just noticed it when watering this week. So I’m inclined to believe that the variegation takes time to come through? I don’t know what will come of it, but I’m curious to see how it will develop and if the new leaves will also have variegation.
      Does the variegation on yours stay brownish red? Was it clear to see as soon as it unfurled?

    I would add a philodendron paraiso verde to you’re list as well- it why plant is the bane of my existence the plant self grows great, but I cannot get the variegation ever- I’ve read that it has to do with heat more than light but my plant has basically given me the middle finger and moved on with life no matter what I do

    • @thundercleese
      @thundercleese Před rokem +1

      Agreed! I've also had so many issues with mine as well regarding bringing out the variegation. Tried everything you mentioned in the last year it's been in my care. The plant is still alive, making new roots and leaves that are slightly mottled, but not really thriving. So starting last month and going into this summer it will sit out on my NE balcony in a shaded spot to really test the theory that it responds to temperature. So far it's been a couple of weeks and there is a new leaf about to emerge! I'm hoping to see some better variegation.

    • @A.A.Rae-Rae
      @A.A.Rae-Rae Před rokem +2

      Sorry to say, but the reason it's giving you trouble is because it IS in fact more to do with LIGHT... 😮‍💨
      (I've grown these things for 4-5 years now, please trust me -- heat is what keeps them in active growth stages, light is what keeps them variegated)
      It drives me absolutely In. Effing. Sane. to see this heat theory STILL being spread around, when the symptoms people always have issues with (leggy-ness, reaching/stretched inter-nodal spacing, loss of a mottled-type variegation, etc...) are SO obviously all the tell-tale signs of etiolation and light-starvation!!!!
      I have a feeling the reason a lot of sellers still try to tell people it's heat-based is just an attempt to try to keep the intrigue (and therefore the value) up, because - let me tell you - once you have a stock of these plants, they're TOUGH to run out of (they grow SO incredibly prolifically!) Unfortunately, that also means that they take up a lot of valuable front-row grow-light realty, (because, yes, they want A LOT of light) so if they're not earning their keep, then it's tough (as a seller) to want to put in that effort, and sacrifice the space that could be used for other, more valuable plants.

      I have one paraiso verde that I got in pretty bad shape, I chopped it off made 4 plants out of it. Sold all of them and only have the mother plant now. Has so awesome variegation on it also. I keep them very close to the light and there is always a fan and humidifier running. I fed her every week. I hope that helps 😊

    • @jmfrunner
      @jmfrunner Před rokem

      It definitely is heat in my experience. When the weather is consistently 90F my plant puts out the most beautiful leaves, 70s and 80s pretty much plain green.

    • @A.A.Rae-Rae
      @A.A.Rae-Rae Před rokem +1

      @jmfrunner Sorry, but that is not accurate.
      It is a tropical plant that will go into a state of growth dormancy if/when temperatures get too low. That said, even in lower temps, as long as a Paraíso is still getting enough light, then whatever growth it does manage to put out will remain variegated.
      Once the plant is allowed to go fully green, if it is moved to a better-lit spot, then it will take the plant 2-3 leaves to start putting out variegation again (this is why a lot of people I've talked to about this have given up on light) but I guarantee that WILL come back.
      [EDIT: Also, just wanted to mention that none of my plants are ever kept at 90°f+. My average grow temps are between 78°f-83°f, but I've done plenty of testing with this plant -- I've acclimated specimens down to 65°f (and lower) and all have remained variegated until I drop their light exposure too low.]

    Variegated ZZ didn't make the list? Its got to be one of the most beautiful plants but, I've been struggling with mine for 3 years. Purchased a stalk with bulb which developed stem rot just right away. I took every leaf from the rotting stalk (12 leaves if I remember correctly) to propagate in an attempt not to lose the plant. 3 years later all but 4 propagations are lost, two of the four keep throwing out 100% white growths that just die back, 1 is all green and just 1 is variegated. The stalk on the variegated one rotted again a couple months ago but I kept the pot hoping that the bulb(s) would push out another stalk, its ever so slowly pushing another variegated stalk. It has to be the most annoying plant with the worst odds EVER! How are yours doing?

When I took cuttings so after about 3 months of steady growth that wasn’t variegated I chopped back and now the new leaves are getting their variegation back. • @prismatica8416
      @prismatica8416 Před rokem

      I'm guessing you're new to the hobby. Plants don't need exact native conditions to grow, they acclimatize and adjust themselves generally, its why my saguaro cactus and orchid can survive in the same room. Also, variegation really comes down to the plant genetics, it's why the variegation in a Thai Constellation is so different from a Monstera Albo. The number of plants that have variegation directly affected by environmental conditions are far and few between.

    • @mickiteoxon
      @mickiteoxon Před rokem

      @@prismatica8416 No! That’s why hobbyists got their plant dormant after acclimation, the plant thrives to specific temperature and humidity like anthuriums and alocasia. Even Musa banana never wanna thrive to cold temperatures, you may wanna research first before complaining why those variegations ain’t gonna work to your environment. Aroid variegation differ from any plant parameters.

    This is the perspective from a plants viewpoint. If you are fancy and stand out from your surroundings you become a target. More green will come from your growth for protection among the herd so to speak. Highly variegated plants are highly desirable and have come about by human manipulation. It is not desirable from a survival situation so they are really rebelling to go back to their natural origin. That’s my viewpoint. It needs green for long term survival.

    • @fioregiallo
      @fioregiallo Před rokem +1

      I like your main sentiment, but variegation is a naturally occurring characteristic. Sure, humans have figured out *how* to manipulate it but the fact that even highly variegated p. spiritus sancti can come from seed should be enough to prove that. There are several different types of variegation, and chimeric variegation (what's being focused on here) is something that happens naturally. It's like a calico cat. Literally any plant can end up variegated, and some plants like maranta are *only* variegated, there is no plain green version.

    • @thatonedog819
      @thatonedog819 Před 11 měsíci

      just because it's a natural variegation doesn't mean it's advantageous. You also see leucistic animals in the wild and they do not have great survival rates. Mutations are random. Natural selection and chance decides if it survives in the wild or not.

    I thought I was the only one to have problems with the mint. Bought a beautiful plant, and as soon as I brought it home the all green leaves started. Need to cut it back, but I'm trying to hold out hope.

    In my years of keeping plants and watching “Plantubers” one common theme I notice is that, as desirable these variegated plants are , they are equally, if not more UN-enjoyable to keep and grow! Hard pass for me, I prefer lush big green foliage anyway lol

      @GEOMETRICINK Před rokem +1

      I also usually prefer the regular version of all plants. I’ll buy variegation for the fun of it, but never get bummed out if it reverts. Pink princess is a great example. That plant looks amazing reverted. It gets these large, stunning, leaves and sizes up nicely…it doesn’t have to be pink to be gorgeous.

      @tiffanyi5645 Před rokem +1

      I would even go as far to say that a reverted plant is probably a happier plant because it’s not working as hard to photosynthesize hence the bigger beautiful leaves on your reverted PPP 💗🪴

    You can read my mind-or I yours.
    Just as I was fixing my fingers to ask about variegated Micans… you started talking about them.
    Kaylee…what color does your Micans variegation come in before it hardens off?
    My Micans felt the need to be all fancy and threw out a leaf with a fairly large variegated patch.
    That patch wasn’t there the past two weeks🥴
    The color is a bronzy pinkish color that is clearly lighter than the rest of the leaf.
    So what ik asking…does the variegation come in slowly like the monstera Adansonii aurea variegation does?
    Micans…is that how you pronounce it? I’ve been pronouncing it as Me-Cans🥴😂
