    This is great if you want to store a large volume of coffee liqueur to keep on hand. If you need to make some a small amount on the fly for one drink, just pour a shot of quality espresso into some aged rum. Then add simple syrup to taste (agave nectar would be perfect, as it dissolves brilliantly). You can then use it in your regular mixer recipes (e.g. Mudslides, Russians, Granitas, etc).

    I've made homemade coffee liqueur several times. I use less water than used here, but I also brew extremely strong coffee and add that to the water and sugar (instead of adding coffee grounds). When it all cools, then I add the vodka and the vanilla. I've used it right away...and there are no messy coffee grounds to strain out.

      Your recipe sounds like a spiked iced coffee, not really coffee liqueur. But whatever floats your boat . . . it does sound a lot simpler for having some fun with coffee. ;)

    Got a trip report for you. I went ahead and tried to make your recipe, but for low carb. I used Truvia and it wasn't the same ratio... I looked it up for what amount of Truvia I should use for 2.5 cups of sugar (I made half the amount you did) and used that instead. It sat for a full month and I just bottled it today. I had a little too much for the bottle and had to pour myself some to test out today (at noon, nice). It's actually very good!

    If you read the label of Kahlua it says RUM not vodka so why use it to make your own??

    Rehorst vodka is excellent. Comes from Milwaukee WI, But you should be using RUM.

    Yes Daniel you can. A coffee liqueur is just coffee and alcohol. It can be any alcohol you like to get whatever flavor you like. Kahlua is made with rum. Many home made coffee liqueur recipes use vodka. Whiskey would probably make a pretty interesting one, but I haven't tried that myself.

      Sean F Gallagher Blended Canadian Whiskey is all I use for my kahula. It goes down smoothe, isn't overbearing like vodka and makes a very nice drink.

  • @Daralantan
    @Daralantan Před 12 lety

    How would this turn out if it had no sugar in it? I'm curious because I'm usually low carb and very rarely have sugar. If it's only to make it sweeter than black coffee, I don't mind too much since I almost never drink coffee any way other than black. Otherwise I guess I could maybe just use a sugar substitute like Truvia instead.

    So it seems you can do a low carb one using Truvia (best artificial sweetener to use anyway). I haven't had Kahlua in a while due to the diet, but it doesn't seem too different to me.
    Just thought you'd appreciate the results. :)

    I doubt it matters mate, Vodka is Vodka, within consideration (never use Vodkat HAHA its like flavoured water). I'm just gonna use Smirnoff cos it seems to be best you can get in that price range. Other stuff like Absolutes just too expensive and it would cost far less to just buy a bottle of coffee licquer.

    Hy. I have one question. A bottle of vodka has 750ml / 3 cups. If I mix 3 cups of vodka(80proof) with 13cups of simple syrup. What will be the proof of mine coffee liquor? about 10? Isn't that too little, or have I made a wrong calculation? Thanks a lot! :)

  • @Daralantan
    @Daralantan Před 12 lety

    @pouryourpoison Thanks a lot. Your summer coffee drink sounds like a Smith & Kearnes...never had it, thought it sounded like an odd combination (mostly seltzer + coffee).
    I'm still curious how it would turn out if one used a sweetener such as Truvia or Splenda... someday I may try it, will have to remember to mention it here.
    --Also I can't help but noticing that the container you use is one I sell at the retail store I part time at. Never really considered those for liquor infusion!

    This is one of the better "REAL" Kahlua recipes!
    Pay no attention to the Whiskey, Rum, Grain alcohol, glycerine, an so on recipes.
    They are in the coffee liquors category, Home brew hooch, is more like it!
    There is some crazy scary recipes on You Tube, This one wont kill you when
    you want to make Colorado bulldogs, or White Russians!

    • @kristinal-ghoul2680
      @kristinal-ghoul2680 Před 3 lety +1

      Yes, you can make a very good non-alcoholic Kahlua: 1/2 cup water, 3/4 cup sugar, 1-2 tablespoons instant coffee, 1/2 cup dark corn syrup, 1-2 tsp vanilla extract, 1 tablespoon molasses, 1 tsp almond extract. Heat up the first 3 ingredients until dissolved then cool and add remaining ingredients, stirring well. The molasses and almond add the undertones that would have come from the alcohol (rum in the original Kahlua). It's great with milk or even over ice with a bit of half and half. And No--it is NOT the same as coffee with sugar!

  • @RAWRofficial
    @RAWRofficial Před 11 lety +1

    • @kristinal-ghoul2680

      Actual Kahlua uses rum, not vodka. So I think if you want authentic, go with rum.
