Our Winter Love - Johnny Cowell

  • When record producers in Nashville asked Canadian trumpeter and songwriter Johnny Cowell if he would compose a trumpet solo for trumpeter Al Hirt to record on his next recording. Johnny came up with this beautiful melody which he recorded on trumpet as a demonstration record and sent it off to Nashville.
Although Al Hirt didn't record Johnny's song, Pianist Bill Pursell did record it as a piano instrumental which ultimatley became one of the biggest selling recordings of 1963 called our winter love.

There are no words to express the timeless awe of this this track. I was
14 when this was released in 1963. I was a sound nut and had just put
together my first pretty damn good stereo system. I heard this on the
radio and HAD to go purchase the album. I played it over and over and
today at 73 I still love it. I didn't know at that age who composed the tune and of course there was no internet at the time! I'm gad to discover Johnny's original demo! There are very few songs that still do that
    to me. RIP Bill Pursell.

Please tell Mr. Cowell, I enjoyed his original version very much, played it for my wife of 52 years. We considered it "Our Song", always was and always will be. Started dating the love of my life in Feb. of 1962, and the fire's burning yet. Please thank him for keeping the flame glowing.

We "sailed in the sunset" for thirty years until cancer separated us - I was lucky, really lucky to find her. It is not easy for a traditional Baby Boomer to start dating in the millennial years - times have changed! Peace be with you all, Ciao, L

Just as the classic movie, "Casablanca", is considered by many to be the most romantic movie ever made, Johnny Cowell has written probably the most romantic song ever made. The images created by that song are incredibly romantic. I think that is why it has endured for almost 6 decades and why it is still loved by so many people. Johnny is a talented artist and song writer. This song he wrote is proof of that.
The Bill Pursell version of this song is the most popular music video that I made and posted on CZcams. It has over 566k views. It also has the most comments of all my videos. The next most popular song is "Don't cry for me Argentina" has 394k views.

@@terrystrand I too have seen the movie Casablanca a multitude number of times. This movie holds a special place in my heart because I was named after Bogart's character. I will be 77 next week. Casablanca has been called by movie critics probably the most romantic movie ever made. I would place Cinema Paradiso(see the Director's Cut) and The Lovers(aka Butterfly Lovers) 1994 version ahead of Casablanca. Zeffirelli's 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet( which is probably based on The Lovers) might also be placed of Casablanca. I have made and placed on CZcams music videos of these later 3 movies: "She will be Loved" by Maroon Five has scenes from Cinema Paradiso; "Butterfly Lovers as the original Chinese Romeo and Juliet";and "Romeo and Juliet at Seaside Park".

On this day in 1963 {March 18th} Anita Bryant performed her vocal version of "Our Winter Love"" on the Dick Clark ABC-TV weekday-afternoon program, 'American Bandstand'...
Earlier in the month on March 8th Columbia Records released the song, it didn't make Billboard's Top 100 chart...
On the day of Ms. Bryant's appearance on 'Bandstand', Bill Pursell's instrumental version of the song was at #30 on the Top 100, five weeks later it would peak at #9 {for 1 week} and it spent fourteen weeks on the Top 100...
A little under four years later on January 22nd, 1967 a covered version of "Our Winter Love" by the Lettermen entered the Top 100 at #82, three weeks later it peaked at #72, and that was also it's fourth and final week on the Top 100...

I stumbled across Bill Pursell's version of 'Our Winter Love' on CD just the other day and I hadn't heard it (or any version of it) in like 20 years. Then, never knowing what the title was or who penned this beautiful melody, the song eventually became lost in my mind's attic. So, I can't tell you how surprised and overjoyed I was to rediscover it after ALL these years! NOW, I finally know who DID this. I love your Grandfather's recording of this on trumpet too!... It is so wonderfully done. Between the gentle brass and the tinsel-like accompaniment of the piano cords, it's so haunting that it will play in my mind ALL day. But, that's a great one to have DO that! Also, pardon me, but... I will say that your Grandfather can blow! Love it, and thank you!
