Because condenser and capacitor is the same electrical part. Sure, condenser may have other meanings, but 100% accurate both ways.

Dynamic mic it is as filtering out background noise in post hurts my quality I've used USB condenser mics in the past so until i can have a better recording space dynamic sounds like the right choice. Thanks for educating me :)

A very good primer on mics with one exception. All microphones have a pickup pattern that determines where it picks up sound from. Three common types (there are several others) are cardioid, omni-directional and uni-directional. Some mics even have an adjustable pattern. His dynamic mic has a cardioid pattern which means it gathers sound strongly from the front but is much weaker from the sides and get almost nothing from the rear. You can buy cardioid condenser mics. In other words, the technology, condenser vs dynamic, is less important than it's pickup pattern in determining from where sounds will come through.
Dynamic microphones typically do a better job than condenser microphones at rejecting background noise, even compared to condenser microphones. That's partly due to the underlying technology. Condenser microphones are just more sensitive in general, especially outside the midrange frequency ranges of the human voice.

When you just hear the names alone, I felt like dynamic would be a better mic, but I’m definitely leaning toward the condenser mic.

I've always noticed a much wider frequency response with condenser microphones... I forget the exact terms but you demoed the directional positions ... those types are available in the dynamic and condenser microphones... perhaps some videos on those in both types .. fantastic video too ... I didn't realize that condenser microphones are a bit more sensitive to hard shocks and hits ... and that they can potentially distort the sound (in a very loud recording environment) great info thank you

For ham Radio, dynamics only please. The background pickup with condenser mics is brutal: they pick up noise from my keyboard, the dog snoring in the corner and even my wife doing dishes downstairs.

@@scunthorpe5513 A lot of people hate dynamics for gaming because they have to have a mic in their face, but as long as you have a boom, it's not a big deal. I think the Electro-Voice mics are best for this because they control plosives super well and variable D takes care of the proximity effect so you don't have to worry about mic technique while playing. Most gamers I see with dynamics have an SM7B, though it's hard to fault them for that choice either.

Me too - my university students were laughing about what my kids were saying in the bg of my lectures. I now use a VST denoise plugin which uses an algorithm - it’s surprisingly effective and seems to preserve quality. Search for dev Werman on Github if you want to try it.

Dropping facts, even 6 years ago! I'm more shocked by the hatless presentation! There also seems to be far more space in your room back then, unless it's just a very different lens.
Wow. Thanks for watching all the way back. The room looks a lot smaller on camera because I was using a 10-18mm lens and was wide open at 10mm, now I use 18-35 at 18mm. But also there's a lot more stuff and the rack to my left makes the room look a lot smaller too.
Nice work as always. I tend to use dynamics for myself and anyone on my show that has an understanding of mic technique. I'll put guests on a condenser, as they're a bit more forgiving on distance, for those not comfortable with staying in a dynamic's "sweet spot."
I too am a huge fan of dynamics for my podcasts. I do need to work on my mic technique though. I just eat the damn things, but lucky for me the Procaster and SM7b have a decent depth to them so the proximity effect is not too bad.
Podcastage Right. My poor technique is a product of singing in to SM58s in bars with garbage sound systems and trying to hear myself. If I keep the mic INSIDE my mouth, maybe I'll be able to hear better :) Plus, it's a security blanket. I feel more anchored on stage if I'm touching the mic from time to time.
Good video. Some or actually MANY people must understand that a condenser shouldn't be used outside a properly treated room. It just doesn't fit. I made my mistakes in the past, but learned fast, and now I only use dynamics in my regular room space.

Thanks for the information. I never understood the differences between them. I own a AudioTechnica AT 2020 and a Behringer XM8500 and I usually go for the AT 2020. I think it sounds better and it's mostly quiet around my house. Still, I'll try the dynamic mic more to see the differences. Keep up the good work.

Just started have wind noise issues with my rode nt1 mic black just like yours. I've plugged it into scarlet focus right and Yamaha mixers and get loud blowing noises and silent voice pickup. Any ideas why I can do to resolve this? Tried a few xlr cables with same results.
I have no idea what would be causing that. No audio is picked up? You just get static? You've ruled out the cable and interface. That sounds like you should contact Rode and report that to try and get a replacement.
are you using the pop filter?
if not I believe the moisture from your breath can interfere with the capsule if you get too close, preventing it from working
Some of my clients got that issue, it's very probably a humidity problem, I've seen some people blow dry the capsule and fix the problem, not even kidding
This might be the most practical comparison video on condenser vs. dynamic mics for a lot of people. However, you could probably mentioned around 2:40 that a dynamic needs a quiet (i.e. expensive) preamp/interface due to the low sensitivity. Otherwise the recorded sound may have audible background noise which is not accepted at least for certain types of recordings.

Got the answers I needed. I can't control the settings I shoot in, so I'll favor dynamic mics.

The Heil PR40 dynamic mic has some of the best rear-end rejection while still picking up sound from the sides of the mic so you don't always have to talk right into the front like the mic you are demonstrating here.
This video with practical demo has almost cleared all the doubts related to selection of mic, it helped me to decide to chose dynamic because of not having controlled situations like a studio. Thank you dear for your valuable content.
Previously I asked what mic I should use but I forgot one factor. I will quickly re summarize. I have a lot of background noise air conditioner, I'm in an apartment, smoke detector occasionally beeps and all that. The one thing I forgot is i need it to be a USB microphone or one that plugs into the mic in on the computer. I don't have a sound interface and would prefer not to buy one. Look for DYNAMIC USB mics (Samson Q2u, ATR2100USB, AT2005USB).
Defuzzler the Rode Podcaster is also very good

Radio people use dynamic because they are multiple people talking in the same room. If you're alone in a controlled room, where outside noise is not a problem, condenser is the best.

I couldn't decide so I bought both. RE320 for live and AT4040 for pre-recorded voiceover in a controlled environment. Both sound great on my voice with little to no processing.

Look for a used sm57 or sm58. Can find them all day on guitar center used gear page and they are nearlu indestructible.

Also a condencer is better if you do wana record anbiance. John Ziniger a mike expert at the american printing house for the blind AKA APH says that for the best most true sound get a small diaphragam omni mike. A pare if you want stereo. I know I'm going beond the scope of the vid because you focus on podcasting and not as much on field outdoors or just anbiance recording, but I'm an audio geek and I just had to geek out dude.
I agree, also, for indoor dialogue, I recommend a small diaphragm super or hyper cardioid condenser mic, they have better off axis rejection than typical cardioid mics and you dont have to eat the mic, meaning you can keep them out of the shot depending on what you are going for..
Absolutely. You'll often see an x-y setup of small diaphragm condensers for live classical or chorus performances. I have not done much sound design, but I imagine you would absolutely want a condenser because you are trying to capture the most authentic sound, and that's where condensers shine. I wanted to know which mic will be best for my physical classroom podcast Sessions as I share my classroom with a pediatric clinic next door and poor kids scream and cry and real estate agents haunt the corridor with loud sales pitch and I really wanted to manage my audio. the 180 degree example which you gave made me emotional I got what I had came for. It’s a difference
There is a difference which is really noticeable when he played the guitar. The dynamic sounded muddled, like all the notes are jumbled up together making it a bit messy to listen to, while the condenser sounded cleaner and you can pick out the individual notes clearly. When talking though, he sounds better on the dynamic because his voice sounds fuller while on the condenser, he sounded thin. This is why radio and podcasts and anything that records talking favors dynamic mics, while playing intruments, singers, and other activities that either records a lot of sound at once or has a wide range of frequencies favor condenser mics.
Edit: If you want to hear the "difference", get a headset or earphones (speakers won't really work for this), turn up the volume so it feels like you can hear him in your head but not too loud that it hurts, then listen in a quiet place where you won't be distracted.

OKAY, this is like the third time your name came up for my mic education vids. SO... I think I should just subscribe since you clearly know what you're talking about. I remember I went to one guy's video (I'm very new to this whole thing) and he was also selling lessons while sounding overmodulated or tinny, I think that's over modulated. You have never clipped or sounded off.

I have a Snowball condensing microphone. I bought it because I wanted something better than the microphone in the computer. I use it when I'm teaching karate on zoom sessions. From watching your podcast I understand that the condensing microphone is way better for picking up my voice when I'm doing a kata.

Great info watching again years later after I finally acquired both of these mics used in the video. Rode NT1 does benefit (necessitate?) from sound treatment that the Procaster can get by without. Thanks for throwing boxes and dropping truth!

Good description of a very complex subject. Of course their are also ribbon mics and smaller or larger dynamic capsules and diaphragms in condensers As well as built in bias, pass filters and pads, and use effects like like proximity effect.
