  • “You Got The Silver” by The Rolling Stones
    Producer: Jimmy Miller
Composers: Mick Jagger and Keith Richards
Lyricists: Mick Jagger and Keith Richards
Associated Performers: Brian Jones, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Bill Wyman, and Nicky Hopkins
    Lyrics:
Hey babe, what's in your eyes?
I saw them flashing like airplane lights
You fill my cup, babe, that's for sure
I must come back for a little more
You got my heart, you got my soul
You got the silver, you got the gold
You got the diamonds from the mine
Well that's all right, it'll buy some time
Tell me, honey, what will I do
When I'm hungry and thirsty too
Feeling foolish (and that's for sure)
Just waiting here at your kitchen door?
Hey baby, what's in your eyes?
Is that the diamonds from the mine?
What's that laughing in your smile?
    I don't care, no, I don't care
Oh babe, you got my soul
You got the silver, you got the gold
It’s just your love, just leave me blind
I don't care, no, that's no big surprise

This is the last Rolling Stones to feature Brian Jones. It was recorded in April 1969. He plays autoharp here, the soft stringed instrument you hear on the right side of the music. He was fired from the band in June 1969, and died the next month.

The way he pulls the final “surprise” out of his guts and soul never fails to give me chills. Amazing track. Musically, this feels kind of like Stones crossing over into some of the Faces and Early Rod Stewart stuff from around the same era. No wonder Ron Wood ended up with them, really. Well oiled acoustic machine grooves that always seem on the verge of falling apart but gloriously, never do. Nobody has ever played so hard and loose as the Stones in their prime. Songs that years later stand up to critical listening, dancing, and sometimes even…“swaying”…;)

For those who know that this was recorded with both Mick and later Keith on lead vocal there is 1 simple explanation to why Keith made the final cut. Listen for that haunting effect on Keith's slide guitar. Sounds great right. It is reverb played backwards and the way to achieve it then was to flip the multi-track tape over and record it with the tape running forward (backwards). After you flip it back over and play it forward the reverb becomes what it is here. Good stuff only when the tape was flipped Micks vocal track was wiped accidentally in the process. If the tape was 4 track and track 1 had Micks vocal and track 4 was blank and to be used for the backward reverb, when the flip was made track 1 became 4 and track 4 became 1. The mistake to use track 4 was made permanently erasing Micks lead vocal. Mick was away on holiday or somewhere and could not redo the track so Keith did it. Source, Glynn Johns autobiography.

@@Tuesdaysgonewtw According to all accounts I have read, it's Keith playing slide on Let It Bleed. Brian's last slide parts were on Beggars Banquet -- acoustic bottleneck on No Expectations, and probably slide on a Mosrite Melobar (a type of steel guitar) on Jigsaw Puzzle and Salt of the Earth.
[Edit to Add: there is some dispute on who played slide on Jigsaw Puzzle and Salt Of The Earth. Many fans maintain it was Keith, and it may very well have been him doing slide in Open D or Open E on those two tracks, maybe with the top boost engaged on his amp. But Brian definitely played slide on No Expectations, and Keith definitely played slide on the Let It Bleed LP -- and excellently, as we can tell from this track.]

Hey babe, what's in your eyes?
I saw them flashing like airplane lights
You fill my cup, babe, that's for sure
    I must come back
    For a little more
You got my heart, you got my soul
You got the silver you got the gold
You got the diamonds, from the mine
    Well that's all right
    It'll buy some time
Tell me, honey, what will I do
When I'm hungry and thirsty too
Feeling foolish and that's for sure
    Just waiting here
    At your kitchen door?
Hey baby, what's in your eyes?
You got the diamonds from the mine?
What's that laughing in your smile?
    I don't care,
    No, I don't care
Oh babe, you got my soul
You got the silver you got the gold
If that's your love, just leave me blind
    I don't care
    No, that's no big surprise
