  • Let It Bleed (50th Anniversary Edition) is out now:
    abkco.lnk.to/LetItBleed
“Jigsaw Puzzle" by The Rolling Stones
Composers: Mick Jagger and Keith Richards
    Lyrics:
There's a tramp sittin' on my doorstep
    Tryin' to waste his time
    With his methylated sandwich
    He's a walking clothesline
And here comes the bishop's daughter
    On the other side
And she looks a trifle jealous
She's been an outcast all her life
    Me, I'm waiting so patiently
    Lying on the floor
I'm just tryin’ to do my jigsaw puzzle
    Before it rains anymore
Oh the gangster looks so fright'ning
With his Luger in his hand
When he gets home to his children
    He's a family man
But when it comes to the nitty-gritty
He can shove in his knife
Yes he really looks quite religious
He's been an outlaw all his life
    Me, I'm waiting so patiently
    Lying on the floor
I'm just trying to do this jigsaw puzzle
    Before it rains anymore
    Me, I'm waiting so patiently
    Lying on the floor
I'm just trying to do this jigsaw puzzle
    Before it rains anymore
Oh the singer, he looks angry
At being thrown to the lions
And the bass player, he looks nervous
    About the girls outside
And the drummer, he's so shattered
    Tryin’ to keep on time
And the guitar players look damaged
They've been outcasts all their lives
    Me, I'm waiting so patiently
    Lying on the floor
I'm just trying to do this jigsaw puzzle
    Before it rains anymore
    And as twenty-thousand grandmas
Wave their hankies in the air
    All burning up their pensions
    And shouting, "It's not fair!"
    There's a regiment of soldiers
    Standing looking on
And the queen is bravely shouting,
"What the hell is going on?"
    With a blood-curdling "tally-ho!"
    She charged into the ranks
And blessed all those grandmas who
With their dying breaths screamed, "Thanks!"
Me, I'm just waiting so patiently
With my woman on the floor
We're just trying to do this jig-saw puzzle
    Before it rains anymore

To say the sound and lyrics of this song are amazing is certainly an understatement. It makes me and my inner child think, "Brian, why did you have to go?" The Stones went on to be the best band in the world, but their time with Brian was musically extraordinary and magical in my opinion.

Used to listen to this song on the huge piece of furniture stereo console in my parents living room when they weren’t home. I’d never heard stereo before. We only had transistor radios and little portable record players before that. I couldn’t believe how great music sounded. It was like going from a black and white world to a world of color. Played this album and it was a lot different than the Stones songs that I always heard on the radio. Been a huge fan since, and that’s 50 years or so. Won’t go to stadium shows anymore, especially for the outrageous prices, but from mid sixties through the 70s, Stones absolutely ruled!

I truthfully tell people there are only two people who have been there for me all my life: Mick and Keith - . . . beginning when my brother ( then 16) played Jumpin Jack Flash to a his wondrous little brother who idolized him (me then 4) right after he brought the 45 home in 1968; to him giving me his worn out 8 track of Hot Rocks in 1973 (I played it over and over) to this day when seeing Mick and Keith still perform brings a tear to me eye. For me its truly been the sun, the moon, and the Rolling Stones.

Add in the creepiness of Brian's mellotron, which sends this over the edge into eerie territory. It's like the Hurdy Gurdy Man by Donovan meets Bob Dylan, and much of that is courtesy of Mick's lyrics and Brian's mellotron.

One of the best Stones songs, definitely a track that blends in an incredible way with the studio environment, and describes each member of the Stones. The work that Brian (RIP) does with the mellotron is an anthology, without that instrument the theme would not be the same, it is like the sonic backbone of the song ... and being a puzzle, it was the best choice.

GREAT song!!! Everytime I play a "B" side or more obscure song from any Rolling Stones album, I always wished that they would of done a "Besides/Instead of their Greatest Hits" type tour in smaller venues.....

This album shows, for the ones who still doubt of the legacy of The Rolling Stones for bands like AC DC and recently Rival Sons : Stones are one of the historical founders of what we call blues rock or rock blues, in a straight line from specially Chuck Berry. For all those about to rock, I salute you !

This is one of my favorite Stones tunes and it shows the musicianship of the members of the band. Plus, the piano of the late, great Nicky Hopkins. This demonstrates the interaction of Bill and Charlie. Charlie was a great drummer and will be sorely missed. My youth flees from me.

damn shame this song has never been played live. imagine Keith on acoustic, Ronnie doing the slide, and Mick doing the mellotron portions on harmonica. Hell, I'd even put up with Chuck Leavell's clanky rendition of an excellent Nicky Hopkins piano inclusion.

Life and understanding of others IS the jigsaw puzzle...Mick Jagger put it so well...I have always understood this concept in my life and were all here to get home and understand one another so we could get home in our final breath...thank the concept of patience in all that we do and the understanding of life whether it's hard or easy we make our peace with the reality of it all.

Coming home for lunch in grade 5 to listen to this album but this song in particular. For nearly the whole year. Forty-eight years later, I know now that since then I have always liked artists that started a song slow and built upon it. Like the story Jagger could tell with his voice.

Were you a latch key kid perhaps?
I was. With my key dangling around my neck on an orange string.
And my lunchtime boogie was Ziggy Stardust, eventually Torn and Frayed & Shine A light off Exile. Boy, I can't tell you how many late slips my mom had to sign. So worth it.

@@ninamusic1123 In a way, yes. I marvel now on why my siblings let me play their records and players at all, let alone so loud! I had 2 brothers who were so into the Stones, that I overheard and liked. My eldest bro was the Dylan aficionado, which was ignored by me til one hot summer day when I was 12. That is a whole other story!
