Your lectures are really great. I will be more than happy and grateful if you do some lectures about International Relations Theories with this your unique way of presenting topics. You will be the champion of this kind of lectures. I am sure of that.
    Thanks so much.

The idea that Socialists are attached to a 'national identity' is a reasonable explanation of why the Labour Party historically opposed British membership of the Common Market / EU. Another, I would advance, is that the EU was established by Continental European equivalents of Social Democrats and One Nation Conservatives. The Socialist wing of the Labour Party believed at the time that the structures of the EU prevented both legally and culturally, Countries from extending public ownership by Governments and therefore effectively preventing Socialism within an EU member state.
A common 'criticism was that the EU was a 'Capitalist Club.' This further explains why the Socialist wing of the Labour Party were broadly opposed to EU membership and the Social Democratic wing was broadly in favour of continued membership.

how can socialism be seen as a response to classical liberalism?

I'm probably making several leaps here in my logic. Feel free to disagree. If liberalism creates a meritocracy and free market capitalism, but this leads to exploitation and poverty then socialism can be seen as the response. Especially as it wants to abolish capitalism. What do you think

Classic liberalism is about individual rights including the right to own private property and the state protecting them . This allows the crisis driven exploitative capitalism Marx rejected. Whereas socialism rejects these proposing social ownership of the means of production instead of liberalisms private ownership.
