  • Vikings left runestones all over the world, but I decided to check out Uppland in Sweden, that has the highest concentration of runestones in the world!
Runestones were created between roughly the 900s AD and 1130 AD, and there are 3369 runestones in the whole world. Of those, 2881 are located in Sweden, and 1334 in the county of Uppland in particular. I traveled to the town of Sigtuna, and to the Rune Realm (Runriket) around the town of Vallentuna, to examine some of the most interesting runestones I could find.
This turned out to be an expedition filled with tragedy, comedic boasting, sorrow and joy, horrible mistakes by the rune carvers...and fantastic examples of runestones more than a thousand years old.
    The runestones mentioned are:
    - U 389 - outside Sigtuna museum
    - Nf 1956 - at Prästgtan and St Lars' church ruin
    - U 394 - at St Per's church ruin
    - U 390 - at St Lars' church ruin
    - U 393 - at Runstigen
    - U 391 - at Prästgatan
    - U 212 - at Vallentuna church
    - U 214 - inside Vallentuna church
    - U 164 and 165 - at Jarlabankes bro
    - U 236 - at Gullbron
The numbers mentioned are the official runestone designation numbers for each stone.

Hard to see once you get away from Europe unfortunately, but it's really cool to see them! It's such a tangible piece of history. Like, someone actually carved this a thousand years ago right here.

@@ThreeStarVagabond thank you! Could you please help me with something - are there any animal farms, sight of any farm animals when you go to Sigtuna if you walk around the town and it’s outskirts (but not far from the town itself)? I can’t stand the idea of seeing animals that eventually will be slaughtered - so I avoid places where I can see farms, etc. And I can’t seem to get a clear idea from Google search if that would be a problem if I go there. Thank you:)
