My favorite adjective for AKB48 is "supergroup." It's true in terms of number of members, longevity, song catalog, and sales. AKB48, for better or worse, defined idol culture in Japan for a decade. They may have reached their peak in 2012-2015, but they are due for a major comeback.

I think being a member in 48g is harder than being a kpop idol. Yes k-pop idol are talented and very skilled singers and dancers, training for several years, some are starting at very young age. But in 48g, although the audition and training is not same level of difficulty with kpop. 48g thrown in the stage not ready enough, and only what they had is charm and charisma. They should know different dance step from different Akb48 song, and actually its too many compared to k pop idol. The new gen should know how to perform the hit songs of akb48 from old gen to current era. While kpop idols shapes in training room, 48g idols are shape both in training room and most of all the stage. We literally witness them how they grow as an idol and as a human being, we see them how they're improve, their struggles, how they handle issues around them. Unlike kpop, I don't know if kpop trainee are allowed to study acads in regulary school. But most of 48g idols are students, some of them are college student, ( the first mnl48 all over captain is now a registered nurse)I heard before that some members in akb48 is sponsored by management to their studies. They do it simultaneously while being an idol, actress, model, doing concerts, variety shows, handshake events and etc. It seems what they did is easy on stage, just being cute with flashy costume, but a lot do not know behind the curtains.

in fact the chance to debut in a k-pop group is very very low, and it took years of practice.

and not just 48G, it's like a requirement for jpop groups and japanese music artists to have versatility when it comes to their discography and performances or they'll just fizzle out. even perfume who has a solid, unbreakable concept, challenges the electro-pop genre and the technology used in the music industry that they're still going strong even after 20+ years.
not to mention how out of this world some of the concepts of idol groups (and just all of their artists in general) in japan offers. they push boundaries in music and the pop music industry that when you want to experience rich and varied sounds, you just have to dive in to japanese music and drown in all of its beauty and quirkiness

Well Japanese popular music in general is more versatile compared to American or Korean music so,...
and in context of 48 family group you can feel variety of other musical influence like for example
Pop punk/Rock -> Mae Shika Mukanee, River, Alive, Give Me Five, New Ship, Maybe, Gonna Jump, Bingo, Heavy Rotation
Hip hop -> River, Moto Kare Desu, Konjo
70's pop dance/funk -> Halloween Night, Shoot Sign, Give Up Wa Shinai, Ima Para, Fortune Cookies, Flying Get, Romance Iranee, Ambulance
Pop Latin -> Me wo Aketa Mama no First Kiss
That's why if you can play music, covering 48 songs is so much fun because the wide variety of genre, melody and harmony

If by “cute songs,” you’re referring to their songs written in a MAJOR key (whether ballads or upbeat rockers), and their “non-cute songs” as the ones written in a MINOR key, then I can say that I love their cute songs the most! I love their songs in major (so catchy!), and don’t care for most of their songs in minor (and nearly all songs by any group in minor). Fortunately for me, most of AKB Groups’ over 1500 songs are in major!
Your selection of songs seems to make the major vs. minor key songs contrast very clear, roughly alternating between major and minor key songs (though sometimes a couple of the same type follow one another).
Very interesting juxtaposition of song types! Thanks!

    regardless of 48G..
I often compares K-pop and J-pop as a whole with the allegory of "big fish in a small pond",
The big pond and small pond?
K-pop is big pond, huuuge outreach and ton of exposure..yet everything seem very, "uniform".. everything sounds the same, everything looks the same, even if you have different ideas and concepts,in order to get public recognition, you'll end up producing something "similar" like everyone else's.
Vast, huuuge even, yet Shallow.. Basically a puddle.
Meanwhile J-pop as whole is a "small pond", they mainly marketed towards their own demographic, however.. with just their own demographic alone, they're 2nd largest entertainment market in the world in music consumptions. On surface yes people would see the "cutesy" idol stuff alone, however if you dig deeper you'll find hundreds of genres still thriving well with their own niche market far beyond any places.
I mean see the oricon charts, Idol been conquering top spots for almost 2 decades now. But I bet you band like Spitz, Maximum The Hormones, One OK Rock, RnB artist like Motohiro Hata and Moriyama Naotaro could definitely fill Budokan easily.
Small, yet deep, neverending sources.. Basically a Well.
Playing in the puddle are fun, but bathing from a well are more satisfying.

completely agreed! i started listening to them recently, and i was surprised by the general quality of their music. i always overlooked them because of their reputation as a vapid idol group with little musical depth, but that's not true because even their cutesy songs are quite well made and have catchy and memorable hooks and melodies. in fact, i find that a lot of their most well produced and iconic singles are the extremely cutesy ones

Oh man, how I wish Itoshiki Natasha had her own MV, but it's impossible that even though there are so many good songs in AKB48, they all have their music videos.

MNL48 is struggling with it's own concept... I want them to them to re-debut and freshen up their westernized concepts, too many members and staffs are unfamiliar/uneducated with the 48G concept.

Thank you for the video you have made, I don't know why when I saw this video I felt like I was back in the past where there were still kami7 akb48 but when I realized they had all graduated and two was already married it made me feel like time was passing too fast. I want to go back to that era, the golden era of akb48.

These are only A-side, single coupling songs, album coupling songs. The stage songs probably would show how their discography is a real rollercoaster ride tho. (Probably, my personal favourite concept from them is edgy. They rarely do stuff like Uza and Beginner and probably their new single could fall into this category)

I’m the opposite. I like their major key songs the best. Your songs aren’t necessarily more mature, just songs in a minor key.

It's so interesting to see that the choreography is now so much more advance than before. Formations is what I realise the most, before they tend to just stay at one place. Now they have different formations in one song. Not belittling other akb members but i think it's quite obvious that after hitomi and nako came back, it becomes better for akb.

    • @SNSDP0P
      @SNSDP0P  Před 2 lety +15

This isn't true at all. Akb48 have had complex choreographies for years (beginner, uza, kaze wa fuiteiru, river etc). The idea that akb48 were just swaying on stage until pd48/hitomi is so disrespectful and condescending to the group.
