Act III: Swept up in a whirlwind relationship, Ruggero (John Irvin) has secured his mother’s blessing to marry Magda (Dinara Alieva). But she cannot accept his proposal and reveals to her lover everything about her past as a glamorous Parisian courtesan. Magda then parts with Ruggero for good, leaving to return to her wealthy protector.

This duet by this young soprano and tenor clearly shows that the Met is no longer the international operatic center in the U.S. with both artists possessing outstanding voices and Dinara Alieva caressing every phrase. She should have a great career.

Rarely do all the elements of opera come together so well. Besides the wondrous voices and beautifully conducted orchestra, the setting of the two performers, lit so well on a limbo black stage, enables their acting to compliment their singing. Puccini would no doubt love this version of the opera that haunted him for so long.

I heard Alieva (with Charles Castronovo) in the Deutsche Oper production of this opera several years ago -- it was a transcendentally beautiful performance (available on DVD).

That is out of this world so beautifully presented and sung - what power of emotion they portray. I think this is probably the best I have ever been privileged to see and hear - outstanding. I wish both all the success in the future that other people may experience what I have just felt.
