    I see so many tutorials involving backcombing, tons of spray, endless sculpting, and creating “dents”. If pincurling and brushing out is done correctly, you don’t need all that!!! Yours looks so soft and natural, and way more true to the 40’s era

    • @dawnssful
      @dawnssful Před 3 lety +76

      @Tara Lucas I think that really depends on someone's hair. I have coily (as in an actual afro hair) hair that needs to have tons of hair spray and duckbill clips to help define and set the waves in my hair. I don't think it's a matter or someone doing it right, rather than what works best for individuals hair. For instance if someone has coarse hair (as in large hair strands) then once their hair is set and holds the style, they probably won't need tons of hair spray and back combing. My hair doesn't need the back combing because it is voluminous enough but it struggles to hold onto curls well, that are not my natural coils.
      Furthermore the reason why the poster of this video doesn't need to do all those additional steps is because her hair curls easily, and she has a natural gentle wave to her hair as well. All those features make it very easy for her to have her hair curl, and have those curls stay once she starts molding them.
      As a black woman with natural hair, I find that typically even though we have very curly or even coily hair we can't brush our curls out as much. Whereas I've noticed women with naturally straight hair tend to spend way more time with their brush outs because they generally have to roll their curls tighter to their heads, or just take slightly smaller sections so that they can still have waves and curls with their hair.
      Also I want to say that this wonderful woman who created this video has a fantastic point indeed, please do this style on damp hair. Hair does not need to be sopping wet for this to work.

    • @Gomba13
      @Gomba13 Před 3 lety +29

      Trouble is, we don’t all have her volume of hair. If I were to roll the same number of pin curls she rolls here, my sections would be the size of match sticks, and the result of the comb out would be a 1980s perm shag. So some of us do need to cheat. I am having all the trouble in the world with comb outs just because of my lack of volume. Backcombing helps a lot, and so do alternative rolling patterns. Also, I do standing pin curls all around for volume, and I do sleep on them, and that also helps. They do end up squished, but they are fluffier than flat pin curls because the curl is not gathered in a bunch.
      Bottom line, I have the same preferences as you, I don’t like product and I like touchable hair, but since I am not genetically equipped, I have to make do with the extra steps and product. I wish there were a fine haired miss on here showing the fine haired minority how to do 1950s styles adapted to our hair. Fine haired ladies existed back then too, and they still styled, so there has got to be alternatives.

    • @Gomba13
      @Gomba13 Před 3 lety +9

      @@dawnssful I have the opposite of your hair, fine and straight, and I too switch the pin curl clips and the bobby pins out for duck bill clips, depending. They work great for me, they don’t leave any more of a dent than pin curl clips and less of a dent than bobby pins (fine hair dents a lot). Also, my hair is fragile given it is fine, and duck bill clips insert more straightforward and don’t get caught like other clips and pins so there is less damage when removing them. They also hold in place better because they are longer. I wonder why people don’t use them more.

    • @dawnssful
      @dawnssful Před 3 lety +5

      @@Gomba13 I use the pin curl clips when I am pin curling my hair, but I use the duckbill clips to hold the waves in place once I start the brush out process. Believe it or not my hair is actually fine and delicate like your hair, but it is coily and not straight. I do think that you make a great point in mentioning that fine hair can dent easily, my hair most definitely does as well. When you use duck bill clips do you use them hold multiple pin curls in place?

    Gah you make it look so easy! I’ve been avoiding pin curls like the plague just because they seem so difficult, but foam rollers aren’t giving me the results I want. I’m gonna give these a shot, I hope they work for me! :)

    You have such beautiful hair.
    I remember my mom doing pin curls or me and my sisters hair when we were little.❤

    So nice to meet you, Sage, you are such a delight and a breath of fresh air! You're beautiful inside and out! Since I'm a new subscriber, I must catch up on all your wonderful videos especially those with James and your chickens! LOL! I don't know if you've already mentioned this, but during the '50s and to this very day, using a satin or silk pillowcase can help keep your hairstyle in place even while you are tossing and turning throughout the night. Also, do you have any videos showing the two of you socializing with friends in your vintage home? That would be really cool! Keep up the great work, Sage! You're a keeper!

    Have you run across the scarf twist trick? I don’t know how to explain it, but instead of bobby pins you wrap your hair around a scarf, the results are nearly identical. I’ve been enjoying your channel and when I did the scarf curl trick and brushed my hair out the next day I thought, “oh my hair looks like Sage‘s!” 😂 your videos have influenced my Homemaking skills with some 1950’s charm😉❤️

      I don't know if you mean banana curls. My mom and grandma would wrap sections of our hair around strips of cut up sheets tying them at the end. We had wonderful spiral curls for church.

      Sage Lilleyman I suppose you could use a bath robe tie, I just use a large scarf that I’ve rolled into a long thin... rope like thing? I saw it on CZcams but I can’t remember where 😂 But yes, your videos are so charming and refreshing ☺️❤️

      Lili sorry I thought my comment to Sage went to you too. Clearly I don’t understand youtube 😂 I don’t think it’s like what you described? Although that sounds really cool! I just found a video a gal using one long scarf and wrapping her hair around it so it’s around your head and tied at the top. Not sure if that makes sense. You could prob just type in scarf curls or something and find a lot of vids on it. I’d like to try Sages bobby pin up for a more vintage look though!:)

    I love how easy your tutorials are and don't use a lot of products to do your hair💛💛 always thought that curls with bobby pins become more fluffy, the work that gives is worth💐💐
