- 71-year-old inventor Wendy Thompson is seeking an investment of £50,000 in return for 40% of her business which manufactures an indoor house swing. The idea is a progressive, whole-body mobiliser and rehabilitation swing, which Thompson came up with after her husband had a stroke.
Season 9, Episode 7
An international sensation, Dragon's Den features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Den from our Dragons, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

@Rimadim dim Idk doctors, researchers assist to conventions all the time just for that matter. That's how things actually progress.
For example let's say it's a dermatological convention you are a dermatologist and somehow found a treatment for X skin problem that normally persists finally is treated. Normally you would be like ''hey I did this and I need advice because I may be on something here maybe it's just a coincidence or maybe I found a better treatment for idk a very persistent eczema.
So this woman is a physiologist and she believes she has something here that potentially can help, so why she didn't consult other professionals. Afraid of the idea being stolen? Well then what's the point if you can even sell your idea anyway.
@Rimadim dim the opinion of one specialist (her) does not mean the acceptance of all specialists. For example... my physio treated me for a torn trapezius. I saw another and his opinion was that my rhomboid was actually torn, that's why the previous treatment wasn't working. The first physio was wrong in her therapeutic treatment. That may be the opinion of other physios about this swing.
Specialists converse and work together all of the time. You can't always take the advice and opinion of one.
Peter: "Wendy…"
Me: *Expecting a serious question or answer*
Peter: "…do you know my auntie Joyce on the Isle of Wight?"

That's a bit unfair. It's a matter of semantics, what she clearly meant to say was that the swing would help develop her cardiovascular and respiratory system. If this is 'recorded as live 'she would not get the chance to correct herself.

I nearly lost my left leg in a very traumatic auto accident. I went thru 2 years of non stop physical therapy and i would have LOVED to have had some thing like this to use! Its an amazing idea that would surely sell to hospitals and therapy offices. I really hope she made it with this one.
did you survive?
@@lucasc5622 no, sadly I died three years ago. I’m writing from the 3rd corridor of the 6th dimension on a computer in the Kragnars library
@SouthernOregonOrgani
Agree! But for different reasons. Spent a few months in a coma, and due to transfers between hospitals, received physical therapy that consisted of getting me to walk 30 feet with a walker. That's it. No matter that I did it on my toes, and had balance issues. I was released to do my own therapy. Getting onto my kids' swing set was a huge help, especially for balance. A swing with resistance would have been invaluable in developing core strength. Too bad this lady entered the den unprepared, it could have been a great product
That hair whip by Debra when she declared herself out was pretty majestic.
I’ve heard this nonsense about “Why would someone want this when they can just go to a gym?” multiple times on this show. Are they really THAT out of touch? Plenty of people don't feel comfortable at the gym, find it much easier to be able to have their equipment at home so they can exercise ANY time when it fits in, and don't get me started on the family aspect… a family of 5 would be pricey at the when you could invest in your own equipment. Bottom line, the gym IS awesome if that is what works for you, but to act as though home workouts are obsolete or not "a thing" is asinine. I'd LOVE this!
The reason they do it is because several of them are in the fitness/spa sector. Most notably Duncan, but Debra also has a chain of leisure hotels.
I've noticed with all the dargons that they often go out of their ways to pick holes in any products which threaten their existing business.
Not to mention gyms closed during lockdown (I know this video is old) but also accessibility of gyms for people who can’t/don’t drive or live in areas where they may not be a local gym or limited resources (where I grew up in a tiny country town the local ‘gym’ was a tin shed with some weights in it that the local footy players would use). Also, this kind of thing can be sold to gyms or particularly hospital rehab or physio centres
@@katelynoreilly6144 Exactly. My nearest gym is a car journey away, and if I didn't have a car I wouldn't want to walk/run/cycle there (especially if it's raining) If I had no car I'd do all my workouts at home.
I Like the idea exercise without any real pressure on joints etc Good for older people

@@SuperJohn12354 Not designed liker hers they don't and who wants to have to got to a park to do their exercise routine
@@SuperJohn12354 And how many people want to go to a children’s park, to exercise on their swings??
Exactly. That should have been Wendy's answer when Duncan asked about the target market.
That's why older people like to swim. At least in the Netherlands
I love this idea! I used a swing as a rehabilitation method for one of my students who had suffered from 2 strokes. It helps with balance, coordination and entices feelings of lightness and joy for those who have a burdened body with zero impact! On another note... swinging can be an effective workout building strength in all the muscles especially the abdominals. And with this added resistance, you can get a great cardio workout!! What a shame that no one went for it!
I think this is great. If I could get an injury free cardio workout from a swing I would take it. I hate bikes, treadmills, rowing machines and stairmasters, but a swing would be great.
would you spend 500 quid for it though?
You can make one yourself rather easily
I love it...Im sure it would sell really well.

It's a pity the Dragons don't see the obvious benefits of such a superb idea which many patients will recover from a lot faster.
How does it help stroke victims?
I'm genuinely confused by that.
I’ve spent many months recovering from two major operations, one on each foot. During that time, I’d lost significant muscle mass in my legs, but also was too fragile to walk without crutches, much less run and properly work out my legs. When I saw her swing first thought was cool.. I want one.. especially after I saw the resistance setting.. with proper research it could be a great product.. I am happy for her to get the real help she needed for this stage in her business
Yes it's a good old fashioned swing, but not enough emphasis was given to the fact that you can dial up the resistance to give a gradual increase to the workout. The gym isn't for everyone and I doubt that many stroke patients would feel comfortable in or indeed capable of going to the gym, particularly in their early stages of recovery.
Many great inventions are born from a simple concept.
This would be amazing to have in retirement homes and also just in the backyard.

Its one thing they themselves say their product is good, but it adds far more weight if others believe that too. This is why most come into the Den with pre-orders, actual orders or sales figures and not just a prototype. At the very least prove to them that there is a market there for the product by looking at competitors sales!
But sadly she has produced no evidence that it is safe to use, none that it actually benefits people & zero evidence that anybody is interested in buying them. Nice lady, but it is a crusade & not a business-her idea of market research is asking her friends & peers in the care industry & of course none of them are going to tell her they think it is a bad idea, or have any power to order them or endorse it clinically.
