I purchased a set of Celestron Upclose 20x50s. Arrived way out of collimation. Called the manufacturer who did not assist me with the issue, so I am glad I found your video! I could not find the secondary screws on inner sides of the barrels, but discovered that by adjusting the one on the top of the right barrel corrected horizontal collimation and on one the left side corrected vertical collimation. Regardless, thank you for this video. Educational and easy to understand your technique

had some 20+ year old Celestron 7x50 that were a pain to use for the occasional use including stargazing. I used my Trico-machine astronomy mount to focus on a distant target and slowy adusted the double image in to one... and now its much better. Thank you. Couple more years of use out of these Bins...
Thanks man. I bought my first binocular, a Celestron upclose 10-30X50. I was affraid I would have to send it back. Just by twisting the two upper screws you showed first I was able to fix the problem. Luckly this was enough, because the screws in the middle are not accesible. Cheers!
Unfortunately This wont apply to other designs where the outer shell ( body ) is of solid construction. Where there is no obvious way to get into them , you have to send it to the manufacturer or distributor outlet They will simply verify the problem you state and replace them ( under warrenty as applicable ) I had such a pair out of colimation , I sent them off , they said there was a problem and sent me a new pair They work . But Im unsure if they seem slightly hazy compared to the last pair . But it might just be me. I have cleaned the lenses but I cant check the prisms. in case they have any contamination . They focus but somehow seem abit hazy when viewing

Mine's only a cheap set. Thanks, I found it helpful. Got them more or less in line, but only roughly. Definitely an improvement though. It looks like on mine, the top screws are moving them up and down and the inside screws in and out.
Thanks for your video! None of bino repair videos cover the possibility of fixing the alignment by rotating the front lens, the objective. It is mounted concentric so that moving it around it changes the optical center.

Now when i want to use them again i see double image (i remember that they fell out of my hand one time). I hear somethi gobbling inside them. Screws for taking binoculars apart are hard accessible. What do you recommend for me to do now?
You do not need to take them apart for this. Plus doing so could create more issues if you do not know what you are doing. Not a fan of cheap zooms myself, but do order if any one wants any. If no luck I would recommend a set of 7x35 , 8x40, 7x70 or 10x50 budget binoculars. Fixed power will give a wider, brighter view
It would be helpful to know the impact of turning the screws left or right. And almost impossible to look through while making these adjustments. Tripod almost essential.

Hi, The problem I'm facing at the moment is that the right side eyepiece does not "rack in" far enough to focus when the left side is in focus. It's very frustrating. Is it possible that the collimation process can solve this issue? Thanks.
I had the same problem with a Chinese pair I just got from ebay, not to mention that they had been damaged in transit, resulting in the objective lens housing being cocked inward, and being cross-threaded! Anyway, I removed the rubber eye cups, and managed to adjust those lenses(they screw in or out) enough to fix the focus problem, so you might be able to do the same. You'll want to screw the left side out, and right side in. If you still can't get enough adjustment, maybe try swapping the objective lens housings over, then winding the eye piece lenses the opposite way(which is what I had to do!).
@@bensuhard Thanks for this. Unfortunately, I tried to take the eyepieces apart and messed that up big time. The bins are a total loss at this point. I'm going to be looking into some new ones...maybe even image stabilized. Very kind of you to offer your reply/suggestion. I appreciate it.

I have just tried to collimate a pair of Ross, Solaross 9x35 bins and I have never seen a more cheaply made binocular, considering they were supposed to be quality made optics for their day, British made, the best we could make? they have gone in the Bin. Rubbish.
With binoculars like that, there are specialist repair companies out there. It just depends on how much you are willing to spend, and if you think it is worth it.
@@44messier There are only two in the UK, and the last time I had a pair cleaned by optrep they charged me nearly £100 and caused other problems to boot, no thanks. East coast Repairs are mainly a Zeiss repair shop and are booked solid, I don't like spending Lots of money on something that cost half as much to buy, I can see why British made Binoculars are worthless on the second-hand market, they are junk

This is my first pair of binoculars, I'm a beginner.
You do not need to take them apart for this. Plus doing so could create more issues if you do not know what you are doing. Not a fan of cheap zooms myself, but do order if any one wants any. If no luck I would recommend a set of 7x35 , 8x40, 7x70 or 10x50 budget binoculars. Fixed power will give a wider, brighter view

Easy to rest them on a wall, table ext. I actually use my 10" dobsonian OTA
my binoculars dont have the little screws behind the rubber coating, bummer. looks like i have to pitch them

Collimation will not change focus travel. I may at some point strip down a binocular eyepiece to see if there is a solution
