Jon's initial stance of "the game isn't as hard as people say" transitioning to "Wow, I guess it actually is pretty hard, I just find it easy because I grew up playing it..." reminds me of an experience I had recently on the Fire Emblem subreddit, where someone was asking for advice in the fourth game because they were struggling, and someone else kept saying "The game's actually super easy, I don't know why everyone is saying it's hard, it gives you so many tools to break it," in complete denial of the fact that most of those tools are so well-hidden they would never be found by a first time player without a player's guide.

I think this is how a lot of elitism starts. When you're so deeply entrenched in a game, you almost inevitably forget how difficult some basic things can be for entirely new players. This is where the phrase "I don't get why this seems so hard for you" comes from, because they LITERALLY do not understand how hard it can be, because they've already gotten past that point and thus they don't care about it anymore.

Pick up all the collectibles, defeat all the enemies, etc. While my goal is to collect all the stars as fast as possible. We have different ways of playing because she’s a more casual player while I’m a more “hardcore” gamer. It’s also why I hesitate to recommend Xenoblade 2, despite it being my favorite game on Switch. Yeah, not gonna lie, Jon, that's a miss. I grew up with this game too, the genesis version, and, as a kid, I could never get past the double jump on the ostrich (the timing was really weird) and got stuck on the monkeys. Later on, as an adult, I did a LP myself and needed to do tons of practice before i could reliably beat it on camera without dying constantly.

And that’s just with the normal parts: Be Prepared is still unforgiving by his standards and there is still a pick-a-path section afterwards he could have gotten more frustrated at for it was the penultimate room and he still doesn’t remember that, and even Pride Rock requires good spacing to nicely throw off Scar (i.e. Don’t pounce on Scar in the middle of a stage) amidst nice timing. If the game is supposedly easy but you’re collecting health all the time, and still can admit parts are hard, then you’re a master at that game and you’re not doing a good job of making the game easy because it was never easy.

1:11:09 That's actually really interesting and shows that the cutscene is probably being run in-game with Scar as the "playable" character. That tells me that you can probably hack the game to allow you to "play" as Scar's silhouette in other levels, though he probably wouldn't be able to move around or anything since he's not meant to be playable in any actual levels.

Two things, related: 1) That Simba grabbing ledges is damned close to the way Mufasa is holding onto the ledge before Scar does his thing, which I find highly entertaining for some reason. 2) Every time I see Simba grabbing the ledges I hear Guile's Theme from SF 2 in my head.

I assume my timing is just bad, 'cause you got to get the Ostrich between the nests and I think it always lands on the nest for me, which I think kills it.
It's kind of hard to tell what you messed up on in this section because it goes by so fast.

    • @Xenmaru00

I never got past the second level legit consistently, maybe once or twice, only to immediately die on the next level and then not want to struggle through it again. But I wound up seeing the whole game using that level select code. Something about that double jump on the ostrich just never clicked in my kid-brain.

From my limited time of playing it as a kid I don't think I ever got past stage 2. Whether it's the game's fault or me being bad at video games as kid I don't know. But I do know there's enough people for whom Stage 2 was a roadblock.
EDIT: played Genesis version out of curiosity and Double Jump in Can't Wait to be King is constantly screwing me up. Seems like point at which you need to jump is very specific. And that's in first section with guides.
EDIT2: Figured out timing, but now I'm a bit walled at 2nd Monkey section (mainly logs). To not burn continues I don't activate final checkpoint to be in a life loop from previous section.
EDIT3: After giving it a good try without save states I managed to reach Hakuna Matata logs before running out of continues and lives. Still can't say this game is easy. Especially since swing jump feels awkward and aiming at near edge of platform (or sometimes jumping backwards for more consistency) instead of platform itself is not most intuitive thing for me.

As an adult without experience... the 2nd Ostrich Ride is "hard" from looking at it blind.
You'll die on the first obstacle and there are many you'll randomly die on... and if you were a kid in this era playing on a difficult other then the hardest meant you might not get to see the rest of the game. So you'll go into it with 0-2 lives while even as an adult with a consistent 2 lives...
There is a very really chance you'll die on each obstacle 2-3 times because they try to throw you off.
It is like the Turbo Tunnel, it is "hard" because you don't know the pattern but when you finally learn it then it becomes significantly easier. In other words... very bad trial and error design.

This is my favorite Old School Disney Game! I would change Simba's Destiny to be Level 8 instead of that Hard Be Prepared. So Level 7 would be Reunited, where Simba is running through the Jungle, fighting Leopards, Monkeys, and Spiders(Claws can now swipe through webs) to try and save Timon and Pumbaa. It would end with Nala as a boss, and when you defeat her, you get an animation of Nala pinning Simba as they recognize each other and embrace. I'd also change Mufasa's final line from "Everything the light touches is our Kingdom" to "Remember". That would've been a much better Lion King game. I'd love to see you do Let's Plays of Aladdin and Jungle Book(both for Sega Genesis)

Funny thing you might find interesting, the NES Version of Lion King (also the final officially licensed game for the platform in any region, released on May 25 1995, exclusively in Europe), completely cuts out the Adult Simba levels for some reason, meaning the game ends when you defeat the gorilla in Hakuna Matata.

My brother was a lot better, and got to Scar tons of times, but could never figure out how to kill him, since they never teach you or mention the flip move, or that you need to flip him off the side if you do manage to figure it out. We never figured out how to trigger the flip, so we never finished the game! We thought you just had to get rid of more health from Scar like the other 2 phases, and got stuck at the very end of the game permanently.
