Donor iron management: how to determine the optimal donation frequency

  • Blood donors lose approximately 200-250 mg of iron per donation. Individual donor characteristics, such as red blood cell production, available iron stores and iron absorption rates, influence when blood donors can safely donate blood.
    In this video Dr Katja van den Hurk talks about iron homeostasis and blood donation; Sanquin (the Dutch blood service) donor iron management policies and research; and on-going and future studies.
